hello tennis fans everywhere,

this message i write is aimed more toward the collectors and purists
who appreciate the way tennis used to be played in the late seventies/early
eighties and the personalities back then.

For a number of years i've had the view and hope that the relevant
marketers who produce commercial home videos (now dvds) of yearly
highlights, retrospective biographs, and coaching materials ought to be
including complete versions on many-a-classic match (prefably before
the original mastertapes deteriates).

Things have slowly started to improve in this area and classic games
such as 1980 and 1981 Wimbledon finals (which is what i asked about 14
years ago) has been released. But what's going on with the other grand
slams? Anyone know the answer?

I know Wimnbledon releases is handled by B.B.C and to a degree, transworld
international. Last week i tried to drop B.B.C info a line about putting
out other matches from 1977 Wimbledon -some years ago they did 1977
mens Borg vs Gerulaitis semifinal (180 minutes).
Two matches i mentioned to them were-

1977 second semifinal; Connors def McEnroe, 6-3,6-3,4-6,6-4
1977 final; Borg def Connors, 3-6,6-2,6-1,5-7,6-4

Hoping to hear what other collectors has to say. Meanwhile if
you wish to e-mail the BBC in England about these or anyother requests
you have as part of their commercially produced,
classic matches series you can try
the following e mail-info@bbc.co.uk.
Your requests might impress upon them to release more matches as
there are many, many enthusiasts that would derive enjoyment of seeing
again famous matches from the slams.

Hi tennis fans everywhere,

on 19 november i wrote a piece which i called Wimbledon 1977 (now on page 4) basically aimed towards other purists/collectors out there who maybe experiencing the same frustrations as myself regarding obtaining copies of
famous mens and womens matches. I was hoping to hear from some of you
but to date no reply has been forthcoming.

Back in 1990, i first tried contacting Channel nine network in australia to see
if it were possible to buy video's of some wimbledon and french open
finals which they broadcasted via sattelite. I was told i needed to
contact the BBC in Great Britian as they had the copy rights. I tried then the
BBC and basically they declined my request. Later in the mid 1990's i learnt that transworld international
an offshoot of I.M.G had started up a classic matches series but with no
rhyme or reason with regards to their release programmes, i.e. they would put out the 1977 Borg vs Gerulaitis Wimbledon
semifinal one year, that one would expect or anticipate, say, the following
year they would put out the 1977 mens final (also a great match).
At least transworld put out the 1980 and 1981 Wimbledon mens finals
which is also what i requested back in 1992.

I've long had the view that there ought to still be more appropriate matches made commercial
available directly off the mastertapes that are just lying idle in
the archives of various television networks as tennis used to be
a fun sport in those days.

Meanwhile, i invite those of you who have encountered similar
problems to drop us a line regarding your personal experiences.
