I was reading more on the RR format and the more I read and think about it, the more I hate it. :fiery:

More players like Richard need to come out against it. I know Roger seems to be chaning his tune a bit, Richard is really the only person I've read that doesn't like it. :o

Things have changed a bit recently. I don't have the precise quotes, but Richard was heavily against in during summer when the idea was launched, he softend his tone recently, while Roger did the opposite. He seemed to go along in summer, and came out more clearly against it a few weeks ago.

Apart from the RR format, Aidelaide offers some advantages. You do the trip to down under once and then you can adapt, while Doha splits the trip (from Europe) and you have to get used again to a new environment.

I think it's a good idea to play Adelaide. He's just 10 points away from #16 and has nothing to defend in the beginning of the season so he could knock out Djokovic and Murray for the 16th seed for the AO which would help his draw.

Hopefully by then he'll have fully recovered from his thigh injury, bulked up a bit and gotten more fit. :)

I just hope he won't start the year like in 2006 :o We don't know what to expect from him after a long break...
But it's a good idea to start the season in Australia... he will have time to get used to the temperatures.

I am just wondering if he chose Adelaide because of the RR format... to have another chance in case of an unexpected loss for his first match... :tape:

Gasquet: "It was a good match, it was difficult for me because it was the first of the year. I wanted to win this first match and be number one in this round robin [group]. [Mayer] is a great player*, I lost to him at the Australian Open three years ago, so it was a good match for me today."

About the round robin: "It is good for the audience. As I said, if Hewitt loses today, it would be great for the crowd to see him a second time. Maybe the first time it is complicated to see the draw with a lot of names, but for the audience it is good to see Hewitt two times."

Pffff, I don't think that he treasured the points so much. He would have been in the quarters anyway. Unfortunately for him his biggest opponents Murray and Djokovic are at the same stage, so not much to gain up to now with a view to getting to 16 ranking for the AO.

Richard explanations :
Gasquet was not quite so happy, yesterday threatening not to play in a round robin tournament for the rest of the season while delivering a stinging critique of the ATP's experimental format. The Frenchman said he was aware that he needed to win only the first set of his final pool match to reach the quarters, and blamed that knowledge for a three-set struggle against Canadian Frank Dancevic.

"When I won the first set, I knew I was the qualifier for the quarter-finals so it wasn't easy for me to play the second set," Gasquet said. "I didn't like to play after winning the first set. I am not sure I will play a round robin (again) in the year. I did not like the second set."

OK, he won! :yeah: but I'm quite disturbed by the comment about not caring after the first set. Even if he knew he was through he should want to win every match, not only for the points but because that's his job. It just makes him seem lazy and as if he wants to do the minimum possible. I agree with him that the round robin is stupid, but I can't help feeling that if Federer or Nadal or various other players were in the same position, they wouldn't want to give up after the first set, they would want to win. It seems like he lacks competitiveness, and if he wants to be a top ten player and a contender for big titles, he'll have to improve this. :)

PERTH, Australia (Reuters) -- Australian wildcard Chris Guccione shocked second seed Richard Gasquet 1-6 6-3 7-6 to reach the semifinals of the Adelaide International on Friday.

The world number 153 recovered from losing the first set in just 18 minutes to send the Frenchman packing with a victory which included a salvo of 22 aces.

"I don't think I've got flustered ever," the 21-year-old told reporters after the biggest win of his career.

"That's not what I do, so inside I was a bit annoyed and wanted to change something, but he was just hitting winners from everywhere.

"It was a good sign to serve that well on the big points, most of the break points he had I either hit an ace or came up with a good shot, and in the tiebreak he barely got a look-in on my serve."

Gasquet was gracious in defeat and said Guccione's big serving had made the difference.

"I fought a lot in this match but he served too good," the 20-year-old said.

"He will have a big future for sure. He can be in the top 20 in the world with this serve."

The win, Guccione's fourth of the week over a top 100 player, booked him a place in the semis against either Russian Igor Kunitsyn or Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina. Their quarter-final was claimed by heavy rain and switched to Saturday.

Top seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia was also put under pressure by American Paul Goldstein before booking his place in the last four 6-4 7-5.

"It was a big test today for me," said the 19-year-old.

"Even though there was no sun today, it was really humid. The toughest conditions from all the matches actually was today."

Djokovic must also await the identity of his opponent after the quarterfinal between Sweden's Joachim Johansson and American Vince Spadea fell victim to the weather.

He is not a "southern type", though, rather white skin and certainly prone to sunburns if he doesn't care.

From the stats (hey, isn' t there any Australian Gasquetard around to tell us more?) it looks like a solid win. Allez Richard!

I'm here, I'm here! :p I stalked him a bit actually  So, I sat out in the blazing sun and watched.. And well... He was playing very well, actually. The first few games, a bit rusty but he got into it. Julien got frustrated in the first set, so that was over pretty quickly, but he stepped it up in the second. Julien served very well, but Richard was able to hold his own, though he lost balance a couple of times and stumbled and tripped. He had some pretty flashy winners too. A pretty good match, I would say.

Unrelated to the match: While I was eating my lunch, Richard stood about, a metre and a half away from me, talking to these people, when I heard him say "I have to go eat now", and the people said "Italy?!?!" and he was like "no... EAT." I almost dropped my nachos :p I went to Court 2 to watch Charlie vs Bourgeois and I saw him up there eating, then later on I wandered around the practice courts and saw him again. I probably scared him away from Sydney!

Q: Who is the player with the best chance to end Rafael Nadal's 62-match clay court win streak?

Bodo: Roger Federer is the safe pick, but let's not forget that Richard Gasquet (sometimes referred to as "Baby Federer") is explosive and versatile. On a great day, he could pound winners and confuse Nadal in a way that a mere grinder cannot.

Richie-Marcos in the third round could be fun if they both play well. :) His draw isn't too bad at all IMO, it could've been a lot worse (like Safin-Roddick in the 3rd round  ).

OMG. His court positioning... :help:

That generally is terrible, though, isn't it? Maybe he changes for grass, and I've heard good things about the match against Safin in Davis Cup last year.

Source? I don't care so much about this defeat. On the whole, it was a good start in Australia: a QF and a SF. After all, Richard isn't Roger, who wins almost all his matches.;) The AO draw is also reasonable. I don't expect miracles, but a solid performance.

"Gasquet: "I was really tired. In the first set I was tired because I slept at 4:00 a.m. and finished at 1:00. I played so much easier yesterday. It was a tough match today, but Moya played well pretty much. I did my best and I fight, but I lost. I don't play really well because I had no legs, no juice, so it was not easy for me."

Just as I'd expected. :help:

He has to learn to deal with bad scheduling. The top players would still have pulled out a win.

Well that is simple, apart from the post match-routine, I find it rather easy to imagine, that you can't fall asleep immediately. It takes some time until the excitement of a match settles and you can find some sleep, even if you are tired. Personally, I know that feeling, when I return late from a mission abroad, I am sometimes tired as hell, yet not able to doze away immediately.

Richard won the first two sets 6-4 6-4, but his wta serve frighten me :
mostly under 190 Km/h, many under 150 Km/h. But the worst was when he served for the set, twice in the first set, one in the second. Each time, he was broken very easily. Since I haven't seen the match so far, maybe I'm worrying for nothing, but it's strange...

The world No.18 took under two hours to send Volandri packing on Monday to consequently win his first-ever match at the Melbourne Grand Slam.

"I played really good today. It was a great match because Volandri is a great player. He's 30th in the world, so he's a great player," he said.

"I won in three, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. I am happy to win my first match at the Australian Open."

I watched some bits (especially from the middle of the 2nd set) and it was a bit  (it was 2 am... so it can explain why I was half asleep)

To me, it was like he didn't want to waste energy so he played the minimum... He was still very far from the baseline and even to return Volandri's second serve :o

But, anyway... he won it easily. Let's hope he will be able to rise his level when necessary.
