Saumon 's BERCY 2006 report and pics! (update with THURSDAY's report)

I got there around 11:30. I went straight to where they sell tickets and there a guy I had already seen somewhere before offers me to sell me Cat1 tickets he had for a friend who won’t come. He even offers to sell them at a lower price. “I had them for free. I’m a linesman..” “Oh I knew I had seen you before!” “Where?” “Roland Garros! Duh!”. But I had not enough cash with me so I bought regular tickets with my credit card… in Cat4!

The 1st thing I see once I get in is Almagro (aka THE PUNK) on one of those screens outside the stadium for people who are waiting for the next changeover to go to their seats. Ewww! I go around the stadium to see the shops etc. I notice there will be autograph sessions. One with Davydenko (at 3pm), one with Djokovic (at 4pm), one with Nieminen and one with Tursunov (they don’t know when these 2 will take place yet). I then go to take my seat and I watch the Almagro-Bjorkman match til they open the access to the Court 1. Almagro gets an injury time out for a problem with his Achilles tendon.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p239/ParisTennis/Bercy%202006/2006_1030Bercy-0011.jpg

Almagro argued with the umpire (Pascal Maria) after a challenge and of course he was booed!

At mid match it was time to head to the Court 1. I pass by the autograph session desk, the Blog King should be there around 4:30pm. “Cool, right after Nole!”, I think. I want to go seat behind the baseline, on the side where the players enter the court, next to the players box, my favourite place to seat on this court. But the security guy tells me I need a badge to go there. “Are you sure? Last year I could sit there with a regular ticket….” “Ok, you can go…” “Merci!”.
There were only 3 people sitting on this side (plus ballkids in the players box that is separated with a fence). A couple is sitting in the middle and a guy is sitting in the front row. I sit near the guy, leaving one empty seat between us. By the time I take my seat, Tipsarevic and Olivier Rochus are already on the court. I notice Berdych’s coach in the players’ box. A few minutes later he’s joined by Tomas himself. After a quick look at the draw I had printed, I realise the winner of this match will meet the title holder in the second round. Later in the match Christophe Rochus will come to watch his brother and Nenad Zimonjic will come to see his compatriot.

The guy who’s now sitting next to me (I had to move because more people came) keeps cheering/swearing/talking with Janko in Serbian. After a closer look at his badge it says “Tipsarevic Veljko; Tipsarevic coach”. Ok, it’s his brother! This explains many things!
After smashing his racket about one million times, Janko loses in straight sets.

The next match was Max Mirnyi vs Robby Ginepri. I didn’t stay for too long, it was almost time for Djokovic’s autograph session. But I took a few pics for their fans. In the mean time I texted mir to tell her my plans.

I left my seats (Janko’s brother’s seat had remained empty after he left) to a couple of happy kids and headed to the circular corridor. But when I got there Tursunov was already leaving!!! Damn! They had moved it to 3:30pm! Grrrr!!! I knew I should not have taken this bathroom break! (the exclamation point abuse is in honour of Mitya!) Thankfully a girl stopped him to ask him something and I managed to take a pic!

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p239/ParisTennis/Bercy%202006/2006_1030Bercy-0052.jpg

Then I turned around and saw two women standing in the middle of the kids and one of them smiled at me, I smiled at her and I knew it was mir! (with her sister). Then mir and her sis went for a coffee and we came back 15min later for Nole. I joined the queue while mir stayed on the side with her super video camera! A few minutes later Novak Djokovic was there, proudly wearing his France football shirt (a gift from a few MTF girls!). Nole was enjoying himself (earlier I had heard the guy in charge of the autograph sessions saying he was one of the few who actually asks to do autograph sessions and meet the fans :p Good boy!), he said “bonjour” (in French) before signing every card and even shook hands with a few kids. While I was in the queue I heard the people behind me saying Roger had withdrawn and he was replaced by Gabashvili. What a surprise!!! They also said he would be there on Tuesday for an autograph session. Great! But I think the tournament organisators and the fans would have preferred to see him PLAY! Next to the queue there was Ben Nichols from the ATP (you gotta love badges) who was pressuring the guy in charge of the autograph session… “5 more minutes!” “one more minute!” WTF?! Nole doesn’t seem to want to leave! Why stopping it now? Anyway I was lucky enough to go to the “autograph desk” and I could talk a bit with Novak:
-Bonjour!
-Bonjour!
-Congrats for Metz!
-Oh thanks!, he replies with a big smile.
-Is your family here?
-Yes!!!
-Ohh your brothers rocks! (damn I can’t even speak English :retard: )
-My brother rocks? *laughers* I’ll tell him!!!

Then mir and her sis went for a smoke and I went to the UNICEF stand. I donated money and got a bracelet in exchange. (I noticed that Verdasco was wearing it too).

Talking about Fernando, he was playing when I got back to my seat. But he lost to Llodra… After what happened in Madrid, I was very surprised to see Grilotti was umpiring. He announced the score both in French and English but he can’t pronounce well either of the languages…

Then it was Serra and Vliegen’s turn. I was not really interested so I headed back to the Court 1.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p239/ParisTennis/Bercy%202006/2006_1030Bercy-0068.jpg

Before I went to the Court 1 (which is nicknamed “la patinoire” - the ice-rink – because… it’s built on one! No wonder why my feet were frozen!) I asked the security guy standing infront of the Court 2 (the practice court) gate who was practicing there. “I don’t know, he said, I don’t know the names of the players” :retard:
I took the very first seat I could find on Court 1 and noticed the people behind me were speaking German. I turned around and noticed they were Tommy Haas’ parents. I’m still wondering what they were doing at the Acasuso vs C. Rochus match.
I stayed for a few games and left after around 20 minutes. It was around 7:20pm and I was a bit tired of watching tennis at this point (mainly due to the artificial lights). When I passed by the Court 2, I asked the guy: “You still don’t know who was practicing?” “I told you it was Marat Safin, no?” “erm… NO!” (you know it was one of those “No”s that mean “You must be fucking kidding me! Right? Riiiiight? RIIIIIIGHT??!!! :fiery:”) “Well he’s left a few minutes ago through this door *pointing at the door*”. The Teeny Bopper in me could have killed him! Grrrrr!!!

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p239/ParisTennis/Bercy%202006/2006_1030Bercy-0071.jpg

After that I walked around for a while to relax. I played some game at the BNP Paribas stand and won some mini balls. I went to the main hall and saw they had erased Rafa’s and Roger’s names on the draw. Then I decided to go back to the centre court but I upgraded my seat to Cat1 (the guy didn’t ask me to show my ticket and there was tons of empty seats because anyway!).
I watched the end of the Serra-Vliegen match. Kristof had probably not behaved himself while I was away because the crowd would go “BOOO! BOOO!” anytime his 1st serve was fault.

It was past 8pm when Mathieu and Seppi entered the court on “Star Wars” soundtrack. They were really late on schedule and I was starting getting nervous for Safin’s match. Mathieu (Norm Chryst has to learn how to pronounce his name btw!) played well, his forehand was on, he had the support of the crowd and he proved he’s a talented guy when… his head is on. In his on court interview he thanked the crowd for his support and said the next match (against Djokovic) was going to be a tough one, Novak being one of the best upcoming players. Bracialli who had won against Simon earlier that day attended the match.

By the end of Mathieu’s match I had joined Mir and her sister who were sitting a little bit lower. I sat behind them because the seat next to them was broken. Between the match they showed the clip of Marat for the 20th birthday of the tournament. The music they chose for them when Safin and Mahut entered the court (at 9:45pm instead of 8pm!) was “Aslo sprach Zarathustra”. It was as if God in Person was going down to Earth. :haha: And they did the toss on “Where is my mind?” :tape: Thankfully Marat’s mind was on the court!
Mir had made a banner “2006 MARAT’s YEAR” but she was a bit embarrassed to show it. She told me “I have a banner… 2006 Marat’s year…” “oh nice!” “well there’s something else on the back”, she added.. half-laughing! (I won’t reveal it now because it’s something about DiMarat and they’ve not played yet! :p)
From the beginning of the match my neighbours, parents and their 2 children, were checking that they didn’t forget to add 10€ for every ace of Marat and Nicolas for the UNICEF. (There’s a counter in the corner of the scoreboard on the giant screen… there were about 2500€ after the qualies and some 4100€ at the end of the first day).
The first set Marat faced no opposition from Mahut. He played a couple of beautiful passings in returns! He challenged and was wrong… as usual! Igor Andreev and Sasha Volkov were sitting in his box.
We got a little bit scared when Safin was down 0-30 at 4-5 or 5-6 in the second set but he came back easily. It was time for a tie break… a close one! It was 11pm!!! Marat challenged two points in a row in the tie break. They were important points but of course… he was (very) wrong!
Safin finally won. For once it was not the French player who had have the support of the crowd. Marat said once again how he loves Paris, the Bercy crowd behind him and how they stayed so late for him, how he feels well playing here… Even when he was playing bad coming to Paris, he always found back his game in Bercy… He said he had come last year just to give “the presents”. And at the end of his speech he blew a kiss to the camera.

Grillotti umped Marat vs Söderling today. You can imagine how surprised I was.
But Marat was so  the whole match, so uncharacteristically concentrated. And he shook hands with signore Romano. So he must still be OK with Grillotti.
I will never forget how Grillotti calmed Marat in Estoril in 2004.

By the way...why is the tournament called Bercy? What does Bercy mean?

LilyRoseAva
11-01-2006, 09:05 AM
Bercy is an area in the east of the city of Paris, France, north of the river Seine.

The area features two well-known large buildings:

The Ministry of Finances (often known as "Bercy" simply), built in the 1980s; the extremity of the building plunges into the river Seine, where two fast boats dedicated to VIP transportation are moored.
The Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy or POPB is a large sports hall often used for rock concerts.
The Métro station Bercy is between the ministry and the POPB.

Further to the east lies the Bercy Park, and then the Cour Saint-Émilion, where former warehouses have been converted into a complex featuring many trendy stores and a movie theater.

In the metro I meet mir and her sister. They tell me they just got a SMS from Steph, she’s already there! Pheeewww!!! We find her buying the program of the day. Okay, let’s go inside!
It’s almost time for the match to start so we go take our seats! well almost… we take lower seats! Suddenly I scream: “NOOO!! Not him again!!!” I’ve just seen Romano, my all time favourite walking on the court…

Kolya Davydenko vs erm… was there a player on the other side of the net? Oh right! It was SUPPOSED TO BE Mitya Tursunov! What to say about this match… hmm… Did you know that Davydenko shaved his head? What else? Oh right! Sasha Volkov was there, soon joined by Irina. I was surprised to see Eduard did not seat with his soon-to-be sister in law. And of course Anatoly Glebov was there for Dmitry. Sasha left at 1-0 in the second set, it was probably time to get Marat and his girls out of bed!
About the game it was really not Dmitry’s day… he won his first point in the 3rd game! He was sleepy… When he came on court his racket wasn’t even ready! he took some time of the warming-up to make the grip and the poor Nikolay had to wait! Tursunov wasn’t only playing bad but he was also very unlucky. At some point the ball bounce on the net and fall down right behind it… Later he challenged a call out and it was indeed out for one or two milimeters… My theory is that Kolya had offered to pay for Dmitry’s holidays in the sun if he’d let him win… just like Marat did with Mahut!
Near the end of the match the people behind us were joined by a woman in her 60’s (we will call her “mamie”) who literally jumped in their arms to get a hug from them! The tone was set!

After the match we went back to the corridor. We bought UNICEF tombola tickets to win… Mahut’s shoes! And we were joined by mir and her sis again. We were near the Adidas stand and they had one of those Marat (and his ‘fro!) cardboard cutout. Mir tells us “Girls, you’re gonna take the cardboard cutout and I’ll film it.” We both say “No mir, YOU are gonna take it and WE will film it!”. So we asked the girl at the adidas stand if we could do it and she said “sure you can!” and she laughed. We were both thinking mir would took “him” under her arm but no! she innocently approached the cardboard and started to draw it behind her. We were laughing so hard… so was the adidas girl! People must have thought we were weirdos…. Honestly they were not wrong!

In the mean time Berdych and Ginepri had started their match. Mamie was apparently a fan of Ginepri and was calling Tomas “petit voyou” (little rascal). It must be due to his bad boy look and all. Or maybe because of the shhhh thingy… Anyway Tomas was better and he won!
During the whole match Mamie and her friends were making stupid comments… they were also speaking about their cashew nuts that were so good and all. At some point she saw that Pioline was standing in the corner of the court and she shouted “Pioline les billets sont trop chers! Pioline on te déteste! Oui Pioline! C’est moi qui te parle!” (“ Pioline, the tix are too expensive ! Pioline, we hate you ! Yes Pioline ! I’m talking to you!!!”). How very embarrassing!
Berdych gave an oncourt interview and of course mamie complained that his voice was monotonous gnagnagna. So we didn’t get half of what he said. Thank you very much mamie!
I forgot to mention that Tommy Haas’ parents attended the match! They surely enjoy watching tennis! And that the guys sitting next to us (they were not French but we never found out from where they were) were alternatively cheering for both players… in every match!

Then it was Blake vs Haas. Tommy’s parents were still there of course. Mamie’s favourite was James because he’s “so smart, and handsome, and nice, and talented, and perfect…” Her friend added he was “one of the very few players with charisma”. She was already seeing him holding up the tree. “If none of my players is in the final, I’ll sell my tickets. Oh wait if there’s a French player I’ll GIVE them! I hate French players, they all suck, except maybe Gasquet…” she said. At some point changeover, she had the idea to throw cashew nuts at the players. Haha… so very funny!!! NOT! But the worst were her comments on Tommy. You know Haas, he’s always swearing, talking to his coach, etc. She was like “Shut up Tommy! Coaching is not allowed! Will you shut up?” I wanted to turn around and tell her “will YOU shut up?!”. I didn’t because I’m too nice and she kept going “Anyway the only time you’ll see him smile is when you tell him a story about WW II” or “His father’s face is all red… he must drink a lot of beer”. ARGHHHH You could tell we spend too much time on MTF when we were about to use the help smiley banner… :help:
Too bad for her, her beloved James lost. But he was kind enough to sign autographs to the kids who had been selected to go on the court.

As we got kicked out “our” seats by their owner, we then went for a walk in the corridor. Steph had Marie (marifline) on the phone while I took a couple of pics of Gilles Simon who was doing an autograph session. We waited for Marie and headed to the court 1. It was the end of the 2nd set between Nestor-Knowles and Clément-Llodra. (Note to the spectators: No, Knowles is not Tursunov! No, it’s not Nestor either!) It went to the super tiebreak. Many people didn’t know the rules. And I forgot to tell you the umpire was… my friend Roman! So he explained the rules but no one understood because we don’t get a thing of what he says! Neither in French nor in English!
The Frenchies won and everybody was happy. We headed back to the Court Central.

It was already 3-0 in the second set between Ancic and Benneteau. Mario won easily and at the end he exchanged a few balls with a kid who had won a contest. Head had given him a shirt, shorts and a racket that were waaaay to big for him. It was fun, it’s always nice to see a player make a kid happy!

The next match was Robredo vs Paul-Henri Mathieu. Herr und Frau Haas were back, they probably think all the players name Thomas, Tommy or Tomas are their children!
Finally the stadium was full! There was a great atmosphere, I was thinking it would be even greater for the Safin-Gasquet match (plus they were not behind schedule for once!). Paulo had the crowd’s support and fought well but sadly he lost. On the other hand Robredo was very happy to be qualified for Shanghai. His interview was in French again. (Spaniards do use the “no” thing in French too btw!).

We were so excited about the next match when… Steph checked her cell phone. She had 3 unread SMSs, 2 of them saying “Gasquet withdrew”. WHAAATTT??!! Is it a JOKE???!! Gasquet we HATE you!!! (at this point it was one zillionth time worse than when the security guy told me Marat had just left on Monday).

One of the text messages was from mir “Gasquet withdrew safin not playing…. Merde he is practicing Saw him 30 sec” Time to leave the central as fast as we could! We found mir in front of the access to the courts 1 and 2 which was… closed! WTF?!?! Mir explains us she was at the Nieminen-Gabashvili match and that both Davydenko and Tursunov came to watch him and that she then saw Marat for a few seconds until they kicked her out. She didn’t even have time to take one single picture of him! Bercy must be the only fucking tournament on Earth where we can’t watch the players practicing!

We would have thought they had done something to SAVE their tournaments and its image towards the fans but no! Marat has been in such a good mood since he arrived in Paris that I’m sure he would have agreed to move his practice session to the big court, or play with kids, or making a strip-tease, or running around the court naked like a streaker! But no! Instead of that they moved Hrbaty-Murray to the Central. Those assholes didn’t even announce it right away! They waited for 20-30 minutes after the end of Robredo-PHM to officially announce it to the crowd. But the security guy guarding the access to the small courts had already told him.

We begged him to let us go downstairs (and we were not the only ones!). Mir told him she had made the trip from Holland especially for Safin. But he explained us it was the ATP (thanks Etienne) and the Federation (thanks Christian) who had given them orders! And he adds “btw what’s the fuss with Safin? Everybody is like “Safin… Safin… Safin… where’s Safin? I’m jealous of Safin! I’ll take a racket instead of my talkie-walkie and play tennis!” erm.. bad attempt at being funny! We stood a little longer around (Hope is life!). We had been joined by Marie and her friend, a guy from another forum and we ranted about the calendar, Gasquet being always so unfit, the bad scheduling of the matches, the organisation of the tournament, etc.

It was around 7pm and Santoro/Zimonjic were supposed to do an autograph session and there was nothing else to do! There was already a long queue of kids waiting for an autograph. We asked the UNICEF ladies if they already knew the winner for the tombola. They told us they had been told Santoro might do the draw after the autograph session so they were waiting for him.
About half an hour later they announced the autograph session was… cancelled! One more good news for the kids! And poor us, we didn’t even win Nicolas’s shoes as a consolation prize! (the big prize being the Gasquet-Safin match)

We were tired of standing so we decided to go take some seats in the stadium. We went in through a random gate and a lady asked us to show her our tickets! “Huh? The stadium is half EMPTY! We think we can sit wherever we want!” “No, no! more people will come! But well… you can go in!” Yeah! Right! The corridor was empty, was she waiting for her imaginary friends or what?
On our way to the seats we met the security guy again. He stopped us and told me again how he was jealous of that Safin guy. Blablabla. And he added “I let those kids go through, they got autographs from Safin, Clément, Llodra, etc. They were so happy!” Grrrrr! He can say Hrbaty and Murray saved his life, I was about to kill him when they came on court!

I found the music they chose for their entrance was an insult to the players after what had happened. It was “who are you?”, you know… the CSI song. It was as if they told them they sucked and they didn’t really wanted to see them but they had no other choice.
Well… we didn’t really follow the match… (“oh Puky got broken!”… “ohh I had not noticed he broke back”… “wow Dominik is leading 4-0, I can smell a bagel!”). We kept chatting about who were our favs and most disliked players, the calendar again, the organisation one more time… The man sitting behind us was telling us to shhhhhh. Maybe we would have shut up if I could have heard him, ie if his children had not made me deaf from the beginning shouting “HRBATIIIIIII, HRBATIIIII”!
Hrbaty bagelled Murray and then played with a spectators with one of those toy cars they had to drive around the court with a remote control. Marc Maury (the speaker of the French tournaments, you know, the one who mistranslated Rafa’s speech at RG!) was saying “well, they are not so easy to drive!” to the spectors who was struggling to make it go right while… Hrbaty had almost finished.

We stayed for the doubles (Santoro/Zimonjic vs the Polish guys). So did Sasha Sidorenko. It went to the super tiebreak and the French team won. They thanked the crowd for staying late and then we left.

I'm traumatized, she was just too much. And I stand with what I told you: I really want a :help: banner for my everyday life, it could be very handy in moments like yesterday :tape:
She was criticising every player but James Almighty. Why does she attend tennis tournaments then? that would be more pleasant for other people if she could just stay at home and insult Berdych and the rest in front of her tv, thank you very much. :p

lol, I didn't think of that one, but it would have been perfect too. I really wanted to turn at her and tell her to shut up; but since we weren't even sitting at our places :o we kept a low profile.
