I don't know what happened but it's not that surprising. On the last point of his service game maybe he hit the ball and on the split step he rolled his ankle ir damaged himself in some way, the shot of the opponent went out so he won the game but he cannot play on.

That's just one possibility.

LOL you guys, Kolya sprained his ankle at 5-2 in the 1st set. he got it taped but obviously didn't feel OK, he limped and after holding his serve yes quite comfortably decided to retire. He couldn't get treatment on it for the 2nd time as you know.
Hopefully it's not too serious and the ankle will be OK really soon.

now that you mention it - Tommy Haas has pretty good chances in my opinion. He just needs to win against an in-form Igor Kunitsyn and the way is ( almost ) free to the Final.

Haas should take that opportunity. Nieminen, possible quarter final opponent, had to retire against Starace. Ancic next? ;)

Davydenko retired because Russian Mafia told him to. Corrupt bastard is Davydenko. Along with a couple of Spaniards(RRH) and Argies( Arguello, Gaudio) he is the most corrupt player on tour. Time the ATP done something about it.
