Purple Rainbows TMS Era (and beyond!) Ranking List!

To add a little bit of work myself to the greatest tennis player debate, I went out to construct a list of the greatest tennis players of the TMS era. Since it proved very difficult to compare between eras, I've decided to compare results from players since the atp adopted the Masters Series tournaments in 1990. Well, they were still called Super 9 tournaments by then, but the atp calendar has remained roughly the same ever since. Besides, by 1990, the Australian Open wasn't shunned by the top players at was during most of the eighties.

Criteria for inclusion:

A player must have reached at least the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament, or the semifinals of a TMS event. Though results all the way back to 1990 are counted, players reaching the latter stages of big events only in 1991 or 1990 are not included in this list, as I wanted players who were active in the TMS era for at least a few years. This led to the exclusion of the likes of Jimmy Connors, Andres Gomez and Pat Cash, players who were hardly active in the nineties.

These inclusion criteria led to some surprising players in the list. Most notably Andre Sa (one Wimbledon quarterfinal) and Roberto Carretero, who won Hamburg 1996 and achieved nothing else in his career. Some players with decent results have not been included. For example, Oliver Rochus, the more succesful of the Rochus brothers is not in, whereas Christophe did make the list.

Yet, the inclusion criteria are broad enough, proven by the fact that the entire top 30 as I write this is on the list. The highest ranked player not to make it is Kristof Vliegen (ranked 31).

Points allocation:

Players are rewarded for their achievements at Slams and Masters Series (super 9) tournaments. Points allocation went as follows:

Grand Slam:
Win: 100
Final: 70
SF: 45
QF: 25
R16: 15
R32: 7

Masters Event:
Win: 50
Final: 35
SF: 22
QF: 12
R16: 7

TMC/ATP world championship:
RR win: 10
SF win: 20
Final win: 25

Note 2 things about the points allocation. First, the awarded points are similar (well, 1/10th) to the points players gain for their entry ranking total. In 2009, the ranking points system was changed. I will continue this thread and will start a new thread for the era from 2009 onwards. I will start this thread somewhere after the FO.

A second note about the points system, no points are awarded for 1st or 2nd round losses. This is partly because I don't feel players should be rewarded for early losses, partly because 1 and 3 points wouldn't make much of a difference anyway and partly because it was enough work as it was already.

Finally, I've given players points for other titles won. Every "other" title is worth 10 points.

6th best result:

A problem I have with other people making lists like this, is that they count every result a player has had. This way, longevity gets excessively rewarded. In my opinion, a few top results from a player are more important than a lot of 3rd or 4th round exits. I chose to count only the top 6 results from every player at every tournament (Note that apart from top players like Agassi, Sampras or Ivanisevic, not many players have more than 6 good results at their name at any event anyway).
There's one exception to this 6th result rule. In case a player wins the same event more than 6 times, he gets to add to his total. The only player to have won an event more than 6 times is of course Pete Sampras, so he gets 700 points for his Wimbledon achievements.

Wawa won his first slam and moves up a few spots.
Dimitrov made his first (and presumaly not last) quarterfinal and is a new entry.
Our Czech Canadian friend Pospisil made the third round, just enough to leave the last place in this list. :-p

It wasn't shunned in 88 the AO that is and it leaves a lot of Lendl's achievements out only using 1990 as the starting year.

Good project nevertheless.

Good project nevertheless.

I know, but I could have started in 1980 to include Lendls achievements, but that would have left Borg out.
1990, the year when the Super 9 tournaments were introduced seemed like a logocal staring point. It also happens to be prety much the starting point of the great era of American tennis with Agassi, Sampras, Courier and Chang (though Chang won the FO a year before).

Well Canada, Cincinatti, Hamburg, Monte Carlo and Rome have been around for a very long time, before they became Super 9 events.

Starting at 1990 when it comes to a greatest player debate does leave out guys like Edberg, Becker and Wilander to a lesser extent, while not the greatest of all time definite greats.

It's just a question of semantics especially since Borg and Laver aren't included due to the timeframe.

As I said in the first post, I don't think it is possible to compare players of different eras. So what I did was take a point from where the atp calendar has been pretty much unaltered, which happened to be 1990 when the Super 9 format was introduced. No matter what starting point you take, players will always be left out. You can use this list as a testimony to the greatness of Edberg and Becker, though. Even though both were roughly halfway their careers at 1990, they still achieved more in the nineties than the likes of Kafelnikov, Chang and Ivanisevic.
In my opinion, this project a fair way of comparing players from 1990 onwards. I would applaud every effort to try and do the same for a longer timeframe, though.

For a first udpate, title wins by Federer, Gasquet and Ancic are udpated in the 2nd post of the thread. Ancic overtakes David Ferrer, whereas Gasquet overtakes Berdych.
Furthermore, Jiri Novak retired at a decent #45.

Methodology is terrible. You shouldn't punish playrs for being dominant, but you should punish them for not winning. Every masters that passes and a given player is active in their tennis career should lower their total score as well, not just playing in it and not doing well. That would be to prevent "one surface" type players from only having to count tournaments they primarily only played in. This unfairly punishes truly injured players and people that had overly long careers, but it's much better than punishing people because they are good and favoring players that weren't good. Heh.

How do I punish players for being dominant? The 6th best result rule is actually mant to punish players who don't dominate but play an event all the time and have a lot of 4th rounds or quarterfinals.
Sampras got maximum points for his 7 Wimbledon wins, as did Agassi for winning Key Biscane 6 times.
As for favouring one surface players, they get punished too. Results for all slams and all tms events are counted, so a player who only excells on clay (Kuerten is a good example, even though he had some hard court succes) gets surpassed by a Courier who could play on all surfaces.

Updated for the TMC 2006.
All players won at least one match, so they all add to their ranking total.
Roger Federer is the biggest winner, his 75 points catatpult him to second spot in the TMC ranking since 1990.
James Blake, who tallied 40 points, won 8 spots in the overall ranking, taking him to #64.
David Nalbandians lone win over Roddick gave him just the 10 points he needed to enter the TMC ranking top 10, entering at #9.

Thank you so much for all this! Something new I learned is that Agassi has done very very well in TMC/TMS, I didn't know this, Pete Sampras is owner of GS for sure, and Federer has quite some more titles to win before he can reach top 1-3 of all of those lists! Very great work! THANKS!

Roger's now number 2 in all the slams.

AO behind Agassi
WIM behind Sampras
USO behind Sampras
French behind Nadal.

He's even ahead of Guga at the French!

I dont know, only for Federer I got a number higher than yours:

Grand slams: 16*100+6*70+3*45+2*25+6*15+4*7=2233
Master series:16*50+9*35+7*22+11*12+8*7=1457
Other titles:26*10=260
Master cup:20*10+5*20+4*25=400

Total:4350

I personaly think grand slam should be worth more than twice a master series, but maybe your list is more objective going after the atp formula.

I only count the 6 best results per tournament.

That's a matter of opinion. I don't think it will alter the ranking too much, though.

Didn't want to reward longevity too much.

Only ranking the 6 best results actually hurts dominance as much as it hurts longevity. It would be fairer to continue to include results past the 6 mark but only if it continues to show a level of dominance and success that should indeed be rewarded and shouldn't go unnoticed, such as reaching the finals of a Slam Event or winning it only, and perhaps half points for any semi-finals but nothing more. This way you penalize longevity without sacrificing too many of the hard earned and excellent quality results that do occur.

At the moment you are even dismissing finals results that go past the 6 best results in the same manner you are dismissing a 3rd round result, which is surely unfair. There would not be many instances in which results would change if you were to make a change like this but I'm guessing their would be some, and in such a case you would be further highlighting their dominance and incredible high level play by only including semis, finals and wins past 6 rather than wins, while still not rewarding longevity so much.

Also, have you thought about extending this list to include the entirety of the Open Era, as before 1990 there was the Grand Prix Championship Series which basically is the Masters Series but with different branding.

Please do consider these things, they could form a new thread that works along similar lines and yield more comprehensive results, and you'd certainly be the person to put it together. :D

Great work.

Actually, I think Grand Prix Championship Series never existed in such a poor organized Tour and this list can't be true

They must be worth something, it was the second tier tournament series behind the Majors so it's the nearest equivalent there is.

No doubt.. it wasn't serie like Masters 1000 from 1990. but they are worth of mentioning

Well what were the draws generally like? The winning tendency seems to be roughly the same, with greats having results generally in the teens or higher with others less great notching a few victories and many of the finals were between two very high quality players. Also, there were always roughly the same amount of events in the series which makes it very convenient for comparison.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad your discussing methodology and not the end result.
Obviously, I have given this matter some thought when I started this thread years ago. Players who have finals or semifinals as a best 7t, or 8th result by definition already score very high points for those tournaments. Counting more than 6 results, only when they are excellent, would only put the likes of Federer, Sampras and Agassi (and in a few years Nadal and maybe Djokovic) further ahead of the rest of the field.

However, I have been thinking that winning a slam 7 times is rewarded disproportionally more than winning 6 and reaching a final once. This was never much of an issue, as only Sampras had won the same tournament more than 6 times, but now it seems we might have a realistic chance of Nadal winning, say Monte Carlo, 8 or 9 times, or Federer winning the TMC more than 6 times. The current system might be over-rewarding. I'll give the matter some thought, though I don't like rearranging the points allocation system too much.

Of course I've thought about it. I'd really like to know where Edberg, Becker, Wilander, Lendl and McEnroe would end up if I included their eighties results and how they'd compare to Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.
However, I had to draw the line somewhere. The introduction of the Masters Series in 1990 was a good moment as the calender has remained relatively unchanged ever since.

I could, for fun, work out the total points for Becker, Edberg and co, but it'd take some time and ever since I left university, time has become a precious commodity.
