Federer, Roddick to headline Kooyong Classic

World number one Roger Federer and 2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick are among the big names who will line up in January's Kooyong Classic in Melbourne.

The Kooyong Classic, which is a traditional warm-up tournament for the Australian Open, will also feature 2005 Australian Open winner Marat Safin, Tommy Haas and David Nalbandian.

Tournament Director Colin Stubbs said attracting the big names was easy.

"It's not a very difficult exercise anymore," he said.

"It used to be but we've actually got guys lining up, quite a few players are hoping that one or two of these players will fall over before the event so they can get a run, so it's a nice position to be in."

Stubbs said the Classic was becoming popular with top-ranked players looking to fine-tune their preparations.

"It's a preparation for the Australian Open but it's pretty serious stuff down here," he said.

"They're all very professional about the way they approach their sport and they're really just putting the finishing touches to their game."

The Kooyong Classic runs from January 10-13, ahead of the start of the Australian Open on January 15.

He won this meaningless title earlier this year, got knocked at the AO and went down hill until uncle Jimmy showed up. I don't have good memories of Kooyong. However, I suppose he will only play Kooyong between TMC and AO 2007 so he better make sure he does well.

Okay time for some fucked up logic.

2004, David Nalbandian wins Kooyong. Makes it to the quarterfinals losing to eventual Aussie Open champ Roger.

2005, Roger wins Kooyong. He ends up not able to defend his Aussie Open title losing to an in form Safin.

2006, Andy wins Kooyong. He only makes to the fourth round in the Austrailan Open.

So going by this logic, I'm rooting for Andy to NOT win! Lose Andy, Lose!:rocker:.

 I guess the only difference in 2007 that hasn't been an issue in the past 4+ years is that the first round DC tie is away, so going from Czech Republic to San Jose will be a tough turnaround... after what happened at Vegas last year I'd be shocked outta my mind if he enters there again so after Memphis he'd have a coupla weeks before IW. So, he should be ok:D:p;)

I dunno, maybe he should play a tournament like Doha or Adelaide instead? They're competitive matches and he can earn ranking points and will be better preparation for Melbourne than an exhibition.

They're competitive matches and he can earn ranking points and will be better preparation for Melbourne than an exhibition. He tried Doha and Sydney earlier in his career, they didn't work. I can't think of any better preparation than 3 guaranteed matches against the world's best players in the same exact conditions as the AO, plus the opportunity to practice at Melbourne Park throughout the week.

Kooyong looks like it will be interesting. I just don't understand why Andy doesn't try to pickup some actual points before the Aussie. If Andy won Qatar for instance, before the ausopen he would enter ranked number 4 for aussie which would likely give him a better draw for the open. Alas, all the cool kids are in Kooyong. If Andy is able to notch a win over Roger in Kooyong that will be better than any points because confidence unlike ranking cannot be quantified. However, if Andy goes there again loses to Roger or someone else, I don't see how that is any better than playing in Qatar or anywhere else for that matter.

IMO, that extra week of really hard work in Hawaii is much more beneficial to him - especially if that week is with Jimmy. The points aren't gonna do much for him anyway, and Kooyong is top-quality competition and 3 guaranteed matches. Plus he can set up his base in Melbourne, get comfortable, and all throughout Kooyong, he can practice at Melbourne Park.

I really think it's the perfect way to start the season

Andy has had a good two days of hitting in Hawaii, without Jimmy who is meeting him in Australia. His 'hitting partner' ;) reports that he looks strong and leaner than last season, he was looking a bit 'thick' at times last year. I hope that any photos we get next week show this new physique of his.

I think he's on his way, if not today then tomorrow.

As for the hitting partner, it's the nerve damage in his leg. As you know (I think), that kind of disc rupture can pinch the nerve and cause damage. His leg is only at about 60% of normal strength, so it will take a while to regain that. But, he said he would keep his date to hit with me in March, so I may be coming down to So Cal. I'll let you know. :)

San Jose to be broadcast online
The SAP Open, the Bay Area’s premier men’s professional tennis tournament has teamed with B2 Networks to offer live streaming of all SAP Open matches originating from HP Pavilion. This marks the first webcast for the prestigious ATP circuit stop in San Jose that runs from February 12-18.

The SAP Open will feature American superstars Andy Roddick, James Blake and Mardy Fish, plus defending champion Brit Andy Murray, two-time Grand Slam winner Russian Marat Safin, Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer and Korean #1 Hyung-Taik Lee. Other countries currently represented in the player field include Thailand, Spain, Denmark, Canada, Croatia and Chinese Taipei.

Fans interested in watching matches online will simply hit www.sapopentennis.com and click on the words WATCH LIVE beginning on Monday, February 12. Beginning with the first serve on Monday at 9:30 a.m. PST, fans from all over the world with internet access will be able to enjoy watching matches through to the conclusion of tournament week on Sunday, February 18.

“We’re please to consistently host world-class players in San Jose, but now we can proudly say we’re bringing our tournament to the world,” said Bill Rapp, SAP Open Tournament Director. “We feel this is a great service to tennis fans in the United States and fans on every continent. Tennis truly is an international sport and we’re partnering with B2 Networks to make our matches accessible to millions around the globe.”

"B2 Networks is excited and proud to be have this opportunity to broadcast the SAP Open to tennis fans around the world." said Bruce LeVine, B2 Networks Senior Vice President of Sports. "Anytime you have players such as Roddick, Blake, Safin, Murray and Fish in the draw, the event promises to be exciting! We hope fans will enjoy the chance to witness some world-class tennis if they can’t travel to the HP Pavilion in San Jose.”

Daily coverage begins at 9:30 a.m. PST Monday-Thursday and continues at later times on Friday (11 a.m. PST), Saturday (1:00 p.m.) and Sunday (3:00 p.m.). Any one-session “daily pass” is US$9.99 and a weeklong pass for the entire tournament is just US$29.99.

Ah, that explains why Betfair isn't covering this tournament.

$30  That's even more expensive than Auckland ($20), which was also a rip-off. :(

Even with the favourable exchange rate, that'll be about £16. I might just buy a "daily pass" for the quarter-final or semi-final day, if both Andy and Marat are still in the tournament.

Deboogle!.

TTC carries the QFs all live, i'm sure you can find a feed online somewhere for free ;) The Semis and finals will be on TTC and some other stations around the US, too. but most of them not live. $30 is also about what the Masters TV thing cost for about a year and that included live coverage of several Masters events.

yeah, I think it's too bad it's disappeared from the mens tour, but it's just frustrating that a lot of the American guys are going to play houston on green clay instead of Monte Carlo
In 2005 Nadal played a 5-setter in Miami on Sunday and then flew over to Europe to play Valencia the following Wednesday.

It would be nice if Andy could try the same for Monte-Carlo after Houston. I mean, if he's willing to play San Jose immediately after the Davis Cup then why can't he put the effort in for a Masters Series event?

I'm not very good at finding free live streams, unless others on MTF find them for me. ;)

Yeah, the Masters Series feed was very good when I tried it in Germany. It's not available in Britain though.

Andy's now sponsored by SAP, so he is going to play their tournament. End of discussion there, I'd say. He's also always going to play Houston because of the McInvales. It will be interesting to see if he has the same allegiance to the tournament when it moves away from Houston next year.

He played Monte Carlo until 2003. Never did well there. I guess he figures it's worth it to have an extra couple weeks off and really prepare for the clay season? I really don't know. We rehash it every year and never come to a desirable conclusion about this

I just want Andy to play Monte-Carlo. :(

It's one of my favourite tournaments.

Well based on what was posted in GM, it may not be a Masters event much longer anyway

I know. But I'd like to think the popularity of the tournament will keep it on the AMS.

Ah, that explains why Betfair isn't covering this tournament.

I know I read it somewhere, but where are they moving Houston too?

Yeah playing in MC would be nice considering the fact that USA is losing Davis Cup beacuse of clay so playing more big events could only help Houston won't help because
- surface is still pretty fast
- no good claycourt players

There were hints of moving it to North Carolina and coinciding with the ladies tourny in Amelia Island, but it was just a rumour!

He might be making some extra cash to pay Jimmy's fees ;)

Last time he was runner up to Roger but he was very tired during the whole tourney. I think he hurt himself too.

Exactly, bloss. I dunno, Andy has plenty of money. I'm sure he has a reason for playing, but considering he had to have freaking smelling salts last time he played, barely made it through and yes hurt his elbow, i really just don't understand why he's playing again.

Well yeah Jimmy's an expensive man. Someone's got to keep him in all those designer sweater vests.;)

Do you think he'll play the Canadian Masters?
I'm seriously hoping he will.

umm... of course he will. Barring injury of course. it's a masters event so he's automatically entered

Haha well yeah.. But I remember last year, a lot of the seeded players pulled out of Montreal (it was women but still) - and not because of injuries. I'll assume he'll be there.

Buenos Aires to Bangkok? Clay to indoor hard?

GL to him. I hope the appearance fee is worth it.
