The best russian player is Nikolay Nesterov.
Everybody knows that.

I agree Marat is the best Russian player.
He has won 2 grand slams and 5 masters, he even has a better game than davydenko and has beaten federer- what more do I need to say?
And yes, he beat davydenko twice this year and he was in bad form when he did it. The rankings may show davydenko as better but marat only slipped becasue of his knee injury.

Davydenko is rubbish compared to Safin.

Here in Argentina, we are begging that Davydenko plays instead Safin or Tursunov in the Davis Cup Final.

Nalbandian is the favourite against any russian but Safin.

What kind of :retard: question is this? Safin is the obvious answer, I don't care how high Davy's ranking is.

Marat is the more talented, but Davydenko is the most consistent.

And Safin won 2 GS, he was #1...

He is the best of the 'active' Russian players, he's got more style and game than the others. If not for his injuries (and his oafishness), he could be in the top10 beside Davydenko.

Are we talking right now or over their respective careers?

I was under the impression the thread starter meant the former.

Well clearly if we are talking career wise this question is a no brainer and this thread deserves to be locked up in the MTF dungeon

Well Safin is pretty much better than everyone when he is "on".

Visit atptennis.com -> rankings. There might actually be some indication that Davydenko is the best russian. It's ridiculous how many people bash him, relentlessly stating that safin is better
We all saw Davydenko beating Marat 2 weeks ago, but go on and forget about the results.

Who has more game and COULD be the better player, I think the question is redundant cause it is obvious, just take a look at Marats carrer.

Yes, easily the best overall of the active Russian players. But not currently, if you are going by results of the last two years. Well, that's clear.

The reason for my judgement is that I've seen Safin already playing better in almost every department than any other current Russian player and needless to say that he had already a very impressive despite his oafness and lack of consistency. Davydenko is consistent, but he did not even get close to win a Masters or a Grand Slam so far.

I get your point here but knowone is forgetting about the loss to davydenko. Safin is and always will be the best russian. I think your the one forgetting some results ( dont mean to sound mad or anything) but marat has beaten davydenko twice this year already- look at their head to head. Just becasue rankings show davydenko is higher does not mean anything because safin will be back before we know it. know one is bashing davydenko in any way,he is a great player. Besises the same was argued about roddick and blake and know roddick is back, so not much to say really.

Head-to-Head (Safin vs the other Russians): Safin has a winning record (or at least a tied record against almost all the Russians)

Safin leads Youzhny, 3-0
Safin leads Kunitsyn, 2-0
Safin leads Andreev, 1-0
Safin leads Gabashvili, 1-0
Safin tied with Davydenko, 2-2
Safin tied with Kafelnikov, 2-2

..and the only player to have a winning record against safin is..
Tursunov leads Safin, 1-0

So I guess Tursunov should win..

I'm kidding of course, but I think head-to-heads are a good indicator to consider.

Safin is and always will be the best russian.
Career-wise, I think Kafelnikov is still the best Russian (2 GS Titles, 26 career tiles, career money: $23.8 M) compared with Safin (2 GS Titles, 15 career titles, career money: $12.7 M)

Talent-wise and also in terms of popularity, Safin wins.

Currently, it's clearly Davydenko.

My point is, there are a lot ways of looking at this question.
