Bask: Price dumped: Heal the Dragons' new playing coach
NBL Dragons Lead
MELBOURNE, Oct 23 AAP - Shane Heal has taken over as playing
coach of NBL team the South Dragons following the shock dumping
today of inaugural head coach Mark Price.
And Heal's first decision as coach has been to axe star US
centre Todd Fuller.
The Dragons have lost the first five games of their opening NBL
season, including a 128-108 defeat to crosstown rivals the
Melbourne Tigers last night.
The appointment of Price as the Dragons' inaugural coach was
touted as a coup earlier this year.
He was a champion player in the NBA with the Cleveland
Cavaliers, Washington Bullets and Golden State Warriors and was
named an NBA All-Star four times.
Club officials held an operational meeting last week following
the team's fourth loss, after which Price was asked to resign.
He initially refused to do so, only for the club to push ahead
with the plan to install Heal in the top job.
After two seasons out of the game, Heal was tempted out of
retirement by owner Mark Cowan to be the new club's marquee player.
He missed the Dragons' opening two matches with a back injury.
Heal, a former Boomers star, will now be required to juggle the
difficult tasks of coach and starting point guard.
Former Cairns coach Guy Molloy will also join the Dragons as an
assistant under Heal. Price was on a one-year contract with the Dragons.

The Guy Molloy bit is interesting .. let's just say I'll have bugger all chance of getting boo out of him when the Dragons come to Cairns ..

Fuller was a waste of space, good move

Not so sure about the coaching decision though

I saw some signs of this coming, in the team huddles (Timeouts) Heal was taking over as coach some of the time leaving Price as a spectator. I've watched alot of hoops and its rare u see that.

Recruiting for the Imports for the Dragons would have to be the worst in the league Fuller looked terrible and to this point Franklin hasn't look much better.
I'm not sure Price was too much to do with their problems either.

The fact is the guy has never coached a top level team, was just settling into Australia with his family and after 5 (actually 4) games they sacked him.

To me, it is a disgrace.
At least give him a fair chunk of the season to prove his worth... or not worth.

And I didn't have a problem with Fuller except he was doing the wrong job.
He was quite hard to stop when he had the ball around the basket though.

Guess it's very hard when you're at a club that's owned by high powered businessmen who know very little about basketball .. Some like Shane Heal gets into their ear and the writing is pretty much on the wall ..

Pretty much the same thing happened to Alan Black, two games into his tenure at Perth in 1990 .. Cal Bruton got into Kerry Stokes about not wanting Black there and hey presto he was gone !
