I didn't see exactly what happened as I'm getting ready for work while watching the Tennis Channel coverage, but Monfils apparently hurt his ankle and was taken off court in a wheelchair.

Sucks too because Monfils was playing really well and winning.

Monfils was leaping across the court in celebration.

As he came down he landed on the side of his foot, his ankle twisting in a very painful-looking way.

Oh man it wasn't even during a point? That somehow makes it worse.

The first set was a freak show - Monfils was hitting the crap out of the ball both on serve and return and everything seemed to land inside the court

Bad luck.

 I hope he recovers quickly but I'd almost hope he waits until next year to come back...he shouldn't rush it.

It's always very painful (physically and mentally) to have to retire while leading a match, especially in this case when Monfils was clearly dominating Hrbaty on court.

He was leaping off a point and hurt himself? Can someone confirm this?

that is quite a shame...I'll see if they show that this evening to confirm.

It's a shame, but hopefully he learns form this. He is always jumping and sliding, even on indoor courts. Everyone knows that's dangerous. He was bound to pick up an injury from that.

No it was during a point. He returned a smash and stpidly tried to return the second one and rolled on it

Poor thing. What a shame! Sounds like he won't get a chance to defend his Lyon finalist points, or even finish off the season in Paris. But I agree with whoever said he should take his time to recover. 3 weeks till the end of the season. It's not like he has Shanghai or DC to worry about. Wishing him a speedy recovery...

Yeah but it was after that even, the ball was aleady in the stands or something, he just randomly lept up in the air for the heck of it I guess :(

It was after the point.

From Eurosport Tennis News:
The 20-year-old won the first set 6-3 and looked to be heading for a comfortable victory over Hrbaty. But he turned his right ankle badly while leaping into the air after a point in the second with the scores tied at 2-2 and had to retire after just 52 minutes.

He bounced high in the air once and then again: the second time was when the injury occurred. While the medics came on the Sky commentators at the time were full of sympathy: a nasty incident to occur during a point and somehow nastier after one.

Commentators just said that Bill Norris (ATP Trainer) told them he'll be out 4 weeks, his season is over.

Poor guy, very tough luck.

if i was that tall and all limbs, id consider every jump a risk for injury

Some time ago I thought: "That guy should be careful with his celebrations, some day he will fall bad and then he will suffer the consequencies for exagerating the celebrations" :o

Any pics of the exact moment when he jumped and then fall bad?

All,

Poor Monfils. Tough break. Hopefully, it is just a sprain. He might need to stop jumping around in such celebratory fashion though if he injured himself celebrating a point.
