Fifth title of the year for James!

Solid performance never giving Jarkko chance and challenging him on almost every service game. He's now a perfect 4-0 against Jarkko, but this is his first straight set victory over Nieminen as well as his first ever title defense. James now extends his lead over Robredo in the Race to Shanghai to 15 points.

Great job James, now carry this form into Madrid and tear through that difficult draw.:woohoo:

100% first serve points won? Very nice, James.

Gosh, are u gonna need some luck in Madrid. Tursunov is playing really good right now and he's finally had a little rest since Davis Cup so that'll be a really tough order for James.

Good luck, James! But most of all, well done.

An awesome run Blake, his first time defending a title in EUROPE! Who would've thought?! I'm so delighted for him. One step closer to Shanghai. And who knows, he could always finish in second behind Federer on this season's titles, if Nadal doesn't win Madrid/Paris.

Hey All,:wavey:

Woohoo - way to go James. He has finally reigned in his going for too much, at times, it would seem. Although - he still can improve his first serve %. It's great that he won all of his 1st serve points - but he needs a higher percentage in Madrid.

Hopefully, he can get past his first two rounds in Madrid and mow 'em all down. If he gets the opp to meet Tursey - he could be in for a battle.

"WAY TO DEFEND TO THE END J. B."

Congrats James, I didn't expect him to win since he had already almost maximized his points from optional events, but he played very well during the week. This is the best tennis season for his career and he has excellent chances to qualify for the TMC, I think a quarter final in Madrid or Paris will be more than good enough.

Unfortunately, that's the case. Although, there are times when he has inspireed moments in big tournies. Like when he played Moya at the US this year. Moya had, I believe, 4 consecutive set points in a tiebreak. James saved them all and won the set on his first sp. :worship:

er...if roddick played federer in the usopen in the qf, there would be no need for this thread. Blake was unlucky to run into federer at IW. Roddick was counting his lucky stars that it was ferrero in the final instead.

roddick is still 0-4 vs top 10 this year.

its the same situation as all those alarmists who keep talking about gasquet being all hype, when if you realize he has gotten the worst draws this year. sometimes you need a little luck to bounce your way...

anyways good on andy to capitalize on his opportunities.

yes, because top 10 wins are the end-all be-all for gauging true player worth

yes, because top 10 wins are the end-all be-all for gauging true player worth

did i say that?

it only speaks to the level of competition roddick has overcome in his wins...and yes i think its part of the criteria when comparing blake and roddick

you have a point. roddick def wouldve lost to fed in qf. but on the other hand, i just rewatched the blake/fed qf and on the first set, blake choked away like three set points in the tiebreak, and in the third set he choked like one set point away (or crucial point that setup bp).

some of these were easy serve returns. i say easy because he was hitting them well on non crucial moments. his 5set rec speaks for itself. that said, hes a helluva fighter moreso than nalby, and i believe against anyone else other than fed, he wouldnt have choked.

Presence of Borg brings out best in Blake
October 16, 2006 - 2:10PM

James Blake brought out his best game in the presence of tennis royalty as he won a second straight Stockholm Open on Sunday with Swedish legend Bjorn Borg looking on.

Blake lifted his fifth title of the season, 6-4 6-2 over Jarkko Niemimen in a quick-fire 55 minutes, softening up the Finn with two breaks in the opening set and concluding with two more in the second.

Sitting only metres away from the showcase court in a raised VIP box, Borg kept a keen eye on the action before later presenting the trophy along with Princess Lilian of the royal family.

The venerable tournament venue, the Kungligahallen ("King's tennis hall") is the natural venue for such elite encounters, having been built in the 1930s by tennis-loving king Gustav V.

"This is the first time I've ever played in front of Bjorn Borg - you can bet I was a little nervous," said Blake, also accompanied in Stockholm by his British-born mother on her first visit.

"There was no way I was gonna let my racquet touch the ground.

"I just met him earlier this week, he's a living legend. I wonder if him watching is like me watching a junior match.

"I was star struck to have a true champion like that watching me play."

Blake, sixth in the race for the Masters Cup in China next month, collected his fifth title of the season to stand second overall to Roger Federer (nine).

Also holding five is world No.2 Rafael Nadal.

"Shanghai is a possibility but it's not my main focus," said Blake.

"I want to keep this confidence."

The 55-minute rout was Blake's 55th win of the season against just 21 defeats.

"It's a great feeling, I've not had that many chances to defend a title. I only started winning tournaments in the past two years.

"I hope to have more chances with this kind of success. Maybe I can come back here next year and get a three-peat, but that's a long time away.

"I'm proud of this accomplishment, I'm pretty happy about this."

The on-fire American, ranked sixth, was playing in his seventh final of the year and his second in two weeks after winning in Bangkok over Ivan Ljubicic.

Blake has won 15 of his last 17 matches, repeating as holder after beating Paradorn Srichaphan here a year ago.

He now owns eight titles in 14 finals and owns a 4-0 record over Nieminen, whom he also beat in the Bangkok quarter-finals.
