Not really a good one, we should be able to come up with something better. But we'll reward David with a better one once he starts winning some matches in Madrid.;)

Nice title!

My spies...ahem...sources tell me that David practised first thing this morning with Chucho. I asked them to give David a kiss from us- but sadly they declined....they did say he tossed his hair beautifully though ;-)
Oh and Javier, was there, of course. ;-)

Singles draw is out, I've heading out the door to work now, Fed in his quarter but if he manages to beat him he can be bandwagon player of the month for October

After work I've convinced myself I need to go to the Cyclones (ice hockey) preseason game against Dayton in Kettering so won't be home until very late.

Erlich & Ram Upset By Spaniards in Madrid Opener

Oct. 15, 2007 - Israelis Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram made a surprising first round exit on Monday at the Mutua Madrilena Masters Madrid, falling to Spanish singles standouts Nicolas Almagro and David Ferrer 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-4 (Match TB).

In the only other doubles match Monday, Argentines Guillermo Canas and David Nalbandian prevailed over the first-time pairing of former singles World No. 1s Gustavo Kuerten and Carlos Moya, 6-3, 4-6, 12-10 (Match TB). Canas and Nalbandian, teaming up for just the second time this year, picked up their first win as a duo since their 2005 Halle opener (d. Erlich-Ram).

Almagro and Ferrer, who came to Madrid with career-high South African Airways ATP Rankings of No. 26 and No. 7 respectively, first teamed together this season in Auckland and rejoined forces at the ATP Masters Series events in Montreal and Cincinnai. They lost to Erlich and Ram in their last team appearance, a second round match at Cincinnati.

2-1 first set- Lopez.

set 1 3-2 15 all Lopez

They lost some of the lightening on their court so all is on hold.

They are going to play with the less light. players felt the lightening was plenty.

4-3 set one- lopez

set 1 5-4 and 40/30 Lopez

Lopez wins set 1 in 37 mins. It is not a done deal by any means. david is playing better the last 2 or 3 games.

David wins game 1 set 2. Came out very aggressive here.

2'nd set 2-1 David. Feli is getting aggravated and David has improved greatly.

2'nd set 3-1 David.

2'nd set 4-1 David.

Feli is now 3-4 in the 2'nd set. Things have changed quickly, again.

FELI has come back to tie it 4-4 in the 2'nd set.

nOW 5-5 SECOND SET.

Ferrer Starts Strongly In Madrid

Spanish No. 12 seed David Ferrer got off to a flying start at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Argentine qualifier Guillermo Canas in the first round of the third ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tennis tournament of the season.
Ferrer, who reached the quarter-finals in Madrid in 2005 (l. to Ginepri), converted five of 12 break point chances and won 76 per cent of points on serve to seal victory in 84 minutes against the fatigued Canas – who came through a grueling 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Flavio Cipolla in the final round of qualifying on Sunday afternoon.

"I am happy because of my game," said Ferrer. "Playing in an altitude where I have only practised here one day and I feel good. It was a relatively comfortable match and right now I have confidence for the next match."

The 27-year-old Ferrer improved to a 25-11 match record on the season, highlighted by finishing runner-up at ATP World Tour 500 tournaments in Dubai (l. to Djokovic) and Barcelona (l. to Nadal). The Javea native also reached semi-finals on hard courts at Auckland (l. to Querrey) and Johannesburg (l. to Chardy).

Former World No. 4 Ferrer next will face either countryman Feliciano Lopez or Argentine wild card Juan Monaco, who play in the evening session on Manolo Santana court at the newly-built Caja Magica.

Little unfortunate okay, but an in form Ferrer should be able to handle that kinda thing. It works both ways. But I think David really needs to take some time and work on that serve again. Clay-Leader Ferrer Off To Winning Start In Madrid

Ninth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer posted a 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy on opening Sunday at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open – the third and final clay-court ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament of the season.

Though Ferrer dropped serve three times during the one-hour, 50-minute, he capitalised on five of his 18 break point opportunities to defeat the 43rd-ranked Frenchman for the third time in four meetings.

World No. 12 Ferrer has been in impressive form on clay this season, leading the circuit with a 24-4 record on the surface. He has reached the semi-finals or better in his five previous clay-court tournaments in 2010.

He earned his place in back-to-back finals during the Latin American Golden Swing, finishing runner-up to Juan Carlos Ferrero in Buenos Aires before clinching the Acapulco title with victory over his countryman the following week, and last week advanced to his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final in Rome (l. to Nadal).

Ferrer will next face the winner between Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and Swiss Marco Chiudinelli.

It wasn't his best performance tonight but my god he fought like a tiger and just never gave up and eventually wore Baggy down mentally. I am so proud of him for showing everybody just what guts, determination and a "never say die" attitude can get you through :worship::worship:

Relentless Ferrer dispatches Murray

Ferrer, who is in scintillating form this spring and also reached the semi-finals in Monte Carlo and Barcelona as well as the final in Rome, will next face the only non-Spanish man in the final four, world number one Roger Federer.

The ninth-seeded Spaniard got off to a blistering start, breaking in just the second game, and looked poised for a repeat of the comfortable straight sets win he recorded over the Brit in Rome two weeks ago.

But Murray, who turned 23 as the match went on past midnight, has enjoyed a better run in Madrid and, after threatening in the seventh game, eventually broke back in the ninth, when Ferrer sent a backhand long.

The Scot earned himself yet more break points just two games later, producing a stunning cross court forehand return of serve that dumbfounded Ferrer. But the tenacious Spaniard quickly recovered with some blistering ground-strokes and went on to hold when Murray slapped a backhand into the net.

After stopping the run of three games against him, Ferrer managed to wrestle back momentum from Murray and grabbed the tight first set at his second attempt with a series of huge inside out forehands down the line nicely opening up the court for the cross court forehand winner.

Despite holding break points in the opening game of the second set, Murray was again left disappointed as Ferrer held on. And the frustration finally began to tell on the Scot when he slapped consecutive backhands long of the baseline to hand Ferrer an early break.

However just when the stubborn Scot looked undone, he somehow found a way back into the match, breaking back in the fifth game as Ferrer, who conceded serve with a forehand into the net, suffered a slight slump.

Ferrer, the more natural of the two players on clay, refused to look concerned though and teed up another break chance three games later with a blistering cross court forehand winner.

And although Murray saved it, and a second break point, he eventually succumbed, dropping serve on the third break point after a cross court forehand into the tramlines.

From there Ferrer had little worries, serving out the match to love when Murray dumped a cross court backhand into the net.

From Robbie Koenig:

For those of you who read my last blog, Friday’s evening session is exactly what I’m talking about! It’s almost 2 am Saturday morning as I arrive back from commentating the David Ferrer / Andy Murray match. Ferrer won’t get to sleep till around 4am and he’s gotta come back and play Roger Saturday night. I thought sporting contests were supposed to be fair! That’s BS as far as I’m concerned, Ferrer is at a massive disadvantage having a lot less time to recover, never mind the fact he’s gotta take on Federer! Get rid of two evening session singles matches.

Some good matches today…Nic Almagro is looking really hungry and it’s good to see the young man playing some inspired tennis again because he’s rough on this red stuff. He plays with a lot of passion and I love that!

Roger is slowly getting back to his best and I thought it was a good contest this evening between him and Ernests Gulbis. He hit some great volleys!

Rafa is looking impenetrable. Can’t see anyone beating him!

But for me, today belonged to David Ferrer. His tussle with Murray was vintage stuff and proved again “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog!!” David is probably the player I admire most… Listen, I love watching Federer, he’s a genius, period. And Nadal is phenomenal with his attitude, fighting spirit and the way he carries himself. Ferrer is cut from the same cloth as Rafa, only he’s 5’9 ( I can relate!) and doesn’t have the luxury of being a lefty! But it’s the ATTITUDE of the guy that’s so impressive…the way he relishes the battle and the process of working out his opponent is only matched by Nadal. He rarely lets a poor shot bother him for more than the 25 seconds before the next point. When he vents his frustration, he does that to the max, he’ll destroy his racket, grab a new one, then crack on with the match. No “hangover” from the previous point. He’s got this ability to concentrate for such long periods of time and keep the intensity high…for 3,4,5 hours sometimes. Remember the Davis Cup final against Radek Stepanek??? Enough said!

If tennis coaches/federations etc. want a player to reference, this is the guy. He’s a mortal, Roger and Rafa operate in a different atmosphere. Let’s be realistic here, very few will ever reach the heights of those two guys. I think it’s easier to relate to the nuggety Spaniard. He’s not 6’4 with a massive serve. He doesn’t have bulging biceps or a forehand like Federer, but he’s a very well-rounded player. Well you might say there’s tons of well-rounded players. Yes, true, but very few with the attitude, heart, desire AND wheels of David Ferrer! The greatest compliment you can pay an athlete is to say they’ve maximized their ability and talent, and Ferrer has done that better than most!

Rob

I missed the match but, im happy david got this far he has had a really great run, I knew it would be hard against federer. I agree with what Koenig said about it not being fair that ferrer had to play until 1:30-2 in the morning, then come back the next day and play the world number 1! thats a hard enough task on a normal day but when your still tired from the night before it becomes even harder.
But still I doubt any player could want a better lead up to a GS 3 semifinal apperances and 1 final! Im looking forward to RG for sure :)

Love the Robbie Koenig article - thanks cobalt60!!

Glad to see Ferru truly appreciated for once - it really gets to me that he is so underestimated by so many.

Plus it's his attitude off court that is so great: from everything I've seen / read he's a quiet, unassuming quy who doesn't have a big ego and who loves being with his folks and friends from Javea.

Ah, so he didn't win against Roger, but he didn't make Roger's life easy for him either - well done David!!!! VAMOS for RG!

As a diehard Federer fan who "discovered" Daveed after Roger's loss to Murray at Cincy 2006 and have been following him at tournaments ever since, I was really in a quandary yesterday ... I can't root against Roger, but I would have loved if Daveed pulled out the W.

He's on a tear and has been so impressive of late. I'm really happy for him and can't wait to see him in Cincy. In the meantime, I hope he goes very very far at the French and would be thrilled he if could win it all.

VAMOS DAVEED!

Ferrer Survives Scare In Opener

World No. 6 David Ferrer, who has been one of the most form players of the European clay swing, survived a scare in his opening second-round match at the Mutua Madrid Open Tuesday, beating French qualifier Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 0-6, 6-0.

The Spaniard came into the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tournament on the back of runner-up finishes at Monte-Carlo and Barcelona (l. to Nadal both times), but was shocked as Mannarino pushed him close in the first set and then broke serve three times to level the match with a bagel. Ferrer responded in the decider, though, winning six straight games to claim victory in one hour and 54 minutes.

The 29-year-old Ferrer, a winner of two ATP World Tour titles this season in Auckland (d. Nalbandian) and Acapulco (d. Almagro), improved to a 26-6 match record on the season.

As I said before, Mannarino just doesn't have the stamina to play a complete match at his best level. When he plays well though ..... he plays really fantastic tennis. I think Adrian needs to join me in the gym.

Though off topic, I agree with u Linda...all these classicos totally messes up Spains NT's united morale. Too many arguments and "theatrical" soccer is no fun.

Djokovic To Battle Giant-killer Bellucci

Novak Djokovic continued his blazing start to the 2011 ATP World Tour season when he toughed out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win Friday over in-form Spaniard David Ferrer to reach the semi-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open. The second-seeded Serb improved to 30-0 on the season with his 32nd consecutive match win, dating back to last year’s Davis Cup final. “I needed to work hard and I was in a good position at a set and a break up but I started playing too defensive,” assessed Djokovic. “He got into the match. It was really close in the third. I got the crucial break.”

The World No. 2 improved to 6-4 against Ferrer, but notched his first win in four meetings on clay. “I was aware of the quality of my opponent today and the fact that I never won against him on clay,” Djokovic said.

“I needed to be emotionally stable and handle in the best possible way because obviously I had to stay focused and work hard and that crowd was behind him which was expected. I wanted to use the opportunity and that’s what I did.”

Ferrer certainly gave Djokovic a run for his money and was satisfied with his performance, despite the outcome. “I think it was a good match from my side,” Ferrer said.

“I tried everything. It’s a pity that I had those two faults with a break. Maybe it could have been a little bit more difficult for him but Novak is a player that has a lot of various ways to play and with his serves, he won more free points than me.”

pozzanghera
05-07-2011, 11:56 AM
More than anything, I wish it hadn't had to end on a break of serve. Somehow, it would have been easier to swallow had he been able to hold and make Djokovic serve for it. :(

That being said, I am nothing if not irritatingly optimistic. So here are my silver linings:
1. I don't have to watch him lose to Nadal. Again.
2. Less points to have to defend next year (call me a negative Nelly, but all those finals make me fret in advance for when next year comes around).
3. Overall, it was a better result than I had anticipated.
4. He is a wonderful little fighter with perfect hair.

OK, #4 isn't so much of a silver lining as an actual, straight-up, honest-to-God fact, but still. ;)

It could have been so much worse. Onward and upward, mi ninja turtle. [And apparently Rafa in the quarters in Rome (http://twitter.com/DrewLilley/status/66819997934174208) FML.]

Yes, it has been really quite, I really wonder why??
Where all his fans???

Still a little sad that Ferru lost to Roger in Madrid  I had small hopes he would do the same as Fernandon against Rafa and would finally win against Roger...but well, hope there will be another chance!

On to Rome now :)

Madrid was a horrible tournament. I'm glad Roger wound up winning, although I was for Ferru after Rafa lost to Verdasco. I can't stand Verdasco's attitude. It's very ugly.
