Really high quality match. Both guys played great but in the end Fena was too good. It was a joy to watch to guys really going at it, forehand to forehand rallies were breathtaking at times.

I forgot to add that its pathetic that Gonzalez won 1/13 2nd Roddick serves in the 3rd set... and he still won the match. Really has to improve that he usually makes stupid overagressive plays on 2nd serves.

It's a shame I was only able to watch the last set but I'm glad I did. Roddick is still not great at coming in off the right balls, he was thinking he could come in off anything so long as he went to Gonzo's backhand but it wasn't happening. Both forehands was great.

Thanks for the info. They are both top quality players. Seems the crowd got their money's worth. Although I wanted Andy to win, one can't be unhappy with the results if both were playing up to snuff.:D

Interesting point. But two of the meetings were on grass and Andy will always beat Gonzo on grass. The Cincinatti meeting was not a "slumping Roddick". He had already reached his good form.

I think it's a better match-up for Gonzalez indoors because Roddick's BH slice has no effect on these indoor hard courts. Gonzalez was ripping FH winners off every BH slice, today.

When González is on, you can play well and still go down. This is what Roddick did today. Roddick himself said Fernando got the best of him today and that the better player won. Sometimes it's best not to speak if you're not informed.

It's not as simple as that. It depends on how deep Roddick got his approach shot. To the BH was the right way to go and he won a lot of points this way, getting a deep FH approach in to Feña's BH. You certainly don't want to get Feña into the rhythm of hitting FH many passing shots in a row, he is very good at that.

So the "forehand" beats the "serving machine", eh? Well, I'm not terribly upset about Andy losing to Gonzo. He lost to a tough, quality opponent. Their matches are always entertaining. I'd be more upset if Andy lost to a no-talent like Ljubiclown. :angel:

I knew Gonzo would be a problem for a Andy today: he's getting better as a player and more consistent and their matches have always been hard fought and close. Gonzo was due for a win over Andy anyway and frankly, I'm glad it happened here and not in Cincy.

So congrats to Gonzo, I hope he can win the whole thing now he needs a title badly, and good job to Andy on a great week. :bigclap: Hopefully he'll build on this and do great in Madrid.

One reason I jumped on the Gonzo bandwagon this summer was because the only times Andy played great was when he faced Gonzo. After Gonzo was gone he'd go back to slumping. I don't know why Gonzo brought out the best in him but he did. Not this time though. Oh, well.

He reached Wimby QF last year and this year gave a tough battle to Roddick in DC, I don't think he sucks on grass. ;)

Roddick was almost useless in the first set because he left his forehand side open too wide and then Gonzalez who only made two unforced errors the whole set punished him with big shots into his open side. In the 2nd set the whole thing changed, Roddick played much better, Gonzalez' first serve dropped and it was easy for Andy to win it. The third set was the best and I couldn't say who would win it. Good to see was that both wanted the match. The tiebreak was the deserved highlight to end it. This time Gonzo finally won against Andy again, well done for him to scrape it out! :yeah: I hope Andy at least had some fun at this tournament and might come back next year again :)
