Not many players could've broken Roddick in this match, particularly in the second and third sets. Good rallying as well, his forehand looked better than usual.

On course for that yes and also on course for a 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3 semi final. That would be good.

Ljubicic vs. Baghdatis and Roddick vs. Nalbandian.

Federer,Blake,Safin,Baghdatis,Berdych,Nalbandian could have done it.

because Gasquet didn t break him doesn t mean that Roddick was unbreakable today, especially considering how weak Gasquet 's return of serve is.

Hey Roddick was in the final of US open not so long ago, he's in great form, so it's not a surprise. Too bad Richie collapsed physically in the 2nd and in the 3rd (now that's really worrying).

Of course not. I am not going on Gasquet's return but Roddick served at a very high percentage. Over 70% and he followed it up very well.

:) It was much more like the old Roddick. I was surprised to see him hit so aggresively, even since his return to form his forehand hasn't been the same type of shot it used to be. Today it was like old times, firing it.

I hope his monster forehand comes back on a more consistent basis, too. It's weird that he's been winning so many matches without the use of one of his biggest weapons. Perhaps testament that the rest of his game is getting stronger. :D

Somebody posted in another thread that Andy has not lost to anybody lower than top ten since hooking up with Connors, which is great news. This was his biggest problem throughout 2005 and beginning of 2006 but now he seems to be righting the boat. Yay!

Seems like Andy played well. Well done! Now he should keep that form. Gasquet should practice and practice hard his return of serve though the interesting question is, how he can do that without someone throwing 130mph bombs at him during practice.

Gasquet played okay, his big backswing makes it hard for him to effectively return Roddick's super fast serves and it was a huge problem, he seemed unable to make a dent on his opponents serve. His rallying was okay but Roddick played a really good match. I would call it an average performance from Richie, not good. Not bad.

Thanks :) I can see the return being a problem, especially when Roddick is playing a really good match. I wish Richie could have done more but it sounds like a great win for Roddick. Hope he gets far in this tournament!

Fair enough. I guess I would have to agree that personally if they met in the final I would back Roddick to win the match but Ljubo can be a monster indoors.

I thought his forehand was excellent today but his backhand has been a revelation of late.

If you do watch the match Deb, look out for a really sweet sliced backhand down the line for a winner - it was classy tennis from him today.

My favorite Roddick "rally" was his serve+smash point. :yeah:

I think what impressed me the most is that Gasquet was returning the Roddick serve extremely well - Roddick didn't fire many aces in the match - yet Gasquet never made it to break point. Roddick was playing extremely well off the ground and the fact he wasn't getting the cheap points made no difference at all.

True. Gasquet managed to do it like Federer in returning Andys serve long enough that most of the time, Roddick couldnt easily go for a fh winner. He had to "earn" the point more than once by winning the rally.

Interesting. I would thought Richie could at least get one break point. I mean, Richie's backhand crosscourt to Roddick's backhand should of created a lot of backhand down the line openings. I guess Roddick never allowed him to do that, or his backhand has improved a WHOLE lot.

Hate it when two faves face eachother so damn early! This could have been a huge turnament for Gasquet to boost up his rankings for a *possible* seed at his hometown TMS event. Bummer.

Congrats Andy, it is great to see him showing good form, even though I don't believe he will win the title. There have been many case now when Richard's level drops after the first set, taking care of that should be a priority for his further development.

Not quite. It was different in the three sets. It was an excellent first set from Richard. Roddick had no breakpoint either in set 1. There were hard fouhgt rallies and both played aggressively, there were many winners from both players, great to watch.

In the second Richard lost his momentum, mainly on serve and with the backhand  Roddick continued on his (admittedly) high level from the first and that was enough. Richard did not really give up in sets 2 and 3, but he did not fully believe in changing it around either.
