Lyon is not 100% confirmed yet - it depends on what happens this week in Madrid and how Juan feels after his first indoor tournament - but if he does decide to play any event next week it will be in Lyon :)

Now there are more chances to see him there. And about the following week, as he´s on Aachen Entry List, is it official that he´ll be there or is there any chance of see him in Paris Qualy Entry List?

As far as I am aware, according to the ATP Rules, if a player commits to a Challenger he can't then pull out to appear in another event. It is something to do with contractural obligations and not breaking contact once they have agreed to appear in one place. I don't know all the rules though - but I think that is correct - so - no - he cannot appear in Paris.

Btw - he plans to go to Lyon to qualify but he is very much hoping for a Wild Card either there or in Basel.

Well thanks Judio - but I don't somehow see him playing here  I would be very VERY surprised if he does - especially with a tournament in Argentina the next week! I think he will go home after Aachen. But then again - maybe they just can't bear to be parted from me and our cold, grey English Winter!! :p Not sure if I could get the time off from work that week anyway - but I will certainly add it onto the Schedule for now! Thanks.

Juan will start his 2007 campaign in Adelaide which starts on 1st January, as opposed to the original choice of Chennai. I believe Adelaide is the first tournament which will try out the infamous new Round Robin format  Seems a strange choice to me, as the cut-off for Chennai is lower and I think he could have progressed further there  but guess there are reasons! Good Luck to him anyway!

Yes, Adelaide is the First Tournament with RR.

Adelaide will have the 32 player RR format, so that means Juan Martín will play in the 16 player play-off for a place in the groups stage.

Until now, the players who will be part of that play-off are:

17 Hajek, Jan CZE 76
18 Hernych, Jan CZE 77
19 Vassallo Arguello, Martin ARG 80
20 Dancevic, Frank CAN 87
21 Del Potro, Juan Martin ARG 91
22 Dlouhy, Lukas CZE 92
23 Kunitsyn, Igor RUS 93
24 Vanek, Jiri CZE 94

26 (Q)
27 (Q)
28 (Q)
29 (Q)
30 (WC)
31 (WC)
32 (WC)

If he wins his match agaisnt someone of those players, then he will play other two matches (in the groups stage) for a place in the quarterfinals.

The rest of the tournament has the usual single-elimination format.

Oh, and the tournament will not start the 1st of Juanuary but on Sunday 31 December, because the tournament will last 8 days.

Thank for the info. Admit I don't know so much about this RR thing. Guess we can only see how things go after the first couple of tournaments. I'd certainly forgotten about the 8 day thing too - so no New Year's Eve celebrations for poor Juan Martin

I didn't use to care about RR...

...but then ATP Buenos Aires was selected to be one of the Tournaments to test that system. :tape:

The bad thing is that there will be no more big surprises in the first stages of the tournaments. That means the low ranked players have less opportunities to go far...

Plus with the 24 player RR format (Viña del Mar will have it), the Draw is reduced from 32 to 24. That means the low ranked players will have it more difficult to enter the tournament.

On the other hand, with the 32 player RR format (tested in Adelaide, Buenos Aires and many other Tournaments), there will be one more day of tennis (tournaments start on Sunday) and 8 more matches.

I don't know if you have seen this thread: http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=89129

Thanks for the information and the link. Must admit I hadn't taken so much interest in it, as the only tournament using it that I may go to is Stockholm. I still think it's a bad idea - as you say the lower ranked players have less chance to progress and improve their ranking - and it's very much there to protect the interests of the top "stars" as I see it - but guess we should try to approach the first few with an "open mind" and see what happens. Thanks again.

It is not 100% official yet so I haven't updated the first post - but I understand JM will be skipping the Latin American season next year to concentrate on the US hardcourts instead. He wants to prepare for the US Masters' series in Miami and Indian Wells, and he prefers hard cours to clay - so it really isn't surprising. He hopes to play in Memphis and Las Vegas - I will update the first post when it becomes 100% official!.

Well I heard it from a friend who knows JM, - but, as I say, it is only a rumour at this stage, which is why I haven't updated the Schedule in the first post yet. Until it's officially confirmed, I don't want to post incorrect information in there.

I know about the Buenos Aires tournament, and obviously one might expect him to play there, but having said that, I remember a few years ago that both Nalbandian and Coria skipped it to play in Europe . It was a career decison, as it is not so good for your body to play on hard courts in Australia and then skip for a couple of weeks onto clay, only to go back to hard again in the US Masters' series. Interestingly, JM's coach now was working with Nalbandian at that time  But as I say - nothing official yet. I'll let you know if I hear anything more.

Well that would depend on what the cut off point is for that tournament, and also where he is ranked 6 weeks before, which is when the Entry List closes - so I really wouldn't know at this stage if he could get direct entry or not  Enjoy your time in Memphis anyway - I just want him to get himself over to Europe ASAP so I can see him too :)

Six weeks before - I couldn't remember the cut-off. If he ends up playing qualfiying there, I just may give that a try as well. Given the option, I'd much prefer a nice tournament in Europe to grey Memphis.

Well it's a case of economics isn't it? Nice tournaments in Europe are usually no more than a couple of hours from me - Memphis would take me at least a day to reach, and also a long flight and I loathe long-haul flying  So guess I'm just lucky - though I hate this 6 month period between Basel and Monte Carlo where there really isn't any tennis here  I would love JMDP to play Marseille and Rotterdam in February like Coria and Nalbandian did in 2005 - but somehow I think I have no chance

============

SANTIAGO.- Álvaro Fillol is quite taken aback by the injury which will keep Argentine player, Guillermo Cañas (15th) off the courts for four months. "I guess they'll call me at some point to let me know", he said rather nonchalantly for being the director of a tournament that included Cañas as the second most important player, based on ranking.

In a statement made to Emol, Fillol said that "he (Cañas) was obviously an important part of the tournament, but we were negotiating the addition of a Spanish player. Were are still in the preliminary stages of conversation, but we would like to bring Tommy Robredo, (10th), whom we have already approached".

"We might add another Spanish player, perhaps Verdasco", added Fillol.

The director of the Viña del Mar tennis open, which will take place from January 28th to February 3rd, also mentioned that the center and adjacent courts have already been constructed.

The Viña del Mar ATP has confirmed the participation of Fernando Gonzalez, its most important figure by far. The tournament has also confirmed the attendance of Argentine players, Juan Martín del Potro, Juan Ignacio Chela and Juan Mónaco, as well as Viña del Mar native, Nicolás Massú.

I read that too, but so far, he is not on the official ATP Entry List, so I will not alter our schedule until it becomes official. I think it is quite possible they may offer him a Wild Card to replace Canas, and if he loses early in the AO, he may well accept. But at the moment, the official ATP lists which are updated by the players and coaches themselves in PlayerZone, do not mention him, so if you don't mind, I will keep the schedule as it is, until official news comes from the ATP.

Ok, a win would have been a better option, but hey!! As Rosie said, it was the FIRST match of the season, after a break. I mean, other players are known to not be 100% after a break, and often lose their first match when they return to competition. Does that turn them all into chokers? Does that mean they all have something wrong? I don't think so.
I'm sure Juan will have a lot of fun with Chucho, playing doubles. And yes, he will have some drink for the NY, and this, with no guilt ;)

We all have faith in Juan Martin and I feel he can make some big progress this year, it's just not a good foot to start the season on. It would be ideal if he could win at least one or two matches a Sydney (draw permitting), as he can gain a lot of ranking points at the Australian Open.

Juan and Acasuso withdrew from the doubles today, as Juan has a problem with his back. As far as I know at this stage it is purely precautionary.

Geez that sucks that he had to play on one of the hot days. In Melbourne we usually get Adelaide's weather a few days later, and yeah it was really hot. I can understand that he doesn't like the heat, so that would be a big factor in why he lost. Unfortunately I've been keeping an eye on the forecast in Melbourne, and next wednesday it's gonna be 33, and then 38 on thursday, so hopefully the hot weather can be done with next week, leaving the aus open nice and cool, but I doubt it.

Juan was playing a great match, but his back was clearly bothering him. People were criticizing his decision to retire, but I'd noticed him stretching his back for the entire match, and he'd already called for the trainer.

After losing the second set, he became really frustrated and slammed a ball out of the stadium before calling it quits.

I'd love to know that too. The injury is quite serious but we don't know much about it. I'm sure Delpo has recieved some results by now and we can find out exactly what the injury is and its severity. If he only has pain while serving, I'd still say it's advisable for him to rest up until he's pain free. You should probably replace him, but it might hurt his feelings. :awww:

DEL POTRO INJURY SENDS MURRAY TO ROUND 2

Things were not looking good for Andy Murray. After dropping the first set to Juan Martin Del Potro, the Scott seemed on his way out of the Rome Masters-Series. However giving up is an expression that is not in Murrays vocabulary. The 2008 Marseille champion hung in there and ended up breaking his opponent at 4-4 to seal the second set 6-4 and tie it up at one set apiece. The third and final set looked as though it was going to be a long battle into the Romaine night. However after dropping his serve in the opening game, the young Argentine injured his lower back in midrun while being down 30-0. It was in tears that Juan Martin Del Potro had to retire allowing his opponent to go through to the second round. Murray will face his good friend Stanislas Wawrinka.

Good match for JM, his movement looked good, no signs of injury and his service really worked well, most of the time he was very aggressive (by his standards) whenever he got the first service in. Argentine teenager Juan Martin del Potro captured his first ATP title at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart on Sunday, defeating second-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-5.

The 19-year-old becomes the sixth first time winner of an ATP title this year. ATPtennis.com caught up with the Tandil resident after his maiden triumph.

You had an incredibly tough draw to win your first ATP title, beating four seeds, what are your thoughts on this week?
It has been the best week of my life. I started to play very well in the second round against Simone Bolelli. When you beat good players on this surface you want to keep playing, you don’t want to change anything.

As a young junior player, did you ever dream of winning an ATP title? And would you expect to win it as a teenager?
When I was young, I always dreamt about my first ATP title, a Grand Slam or winning the Davis Cup. Now one of my dreams has become a reality and I have to savor this moment as I’ll never feel the same again.

You have been struggling this year with back problems, is this the best you have felt all season? Have you had any problems lately?
Yes, I started to feel better at Roland Garros when I started to work hard on my physical strength and tennis. I feel as if I have improved a lot. Now I have to continue to improve as Ernests Gulbis, Marin Cilic and I are the young players and a lot of people are expecting good things from us.

What did you do so well this week to win five matches in a row and capture your first ATP title?
When I served during the match, I didn’t miss easy balls. I hit a lot of first serves into court. Against a top player like [Richard] Gasquet that is important.

What goals did you have coming into this season? Now that you're back in the Top 50 and have won your first ATP title, what would you like to accomplish the rest of the year?
I would like to win more ATP titles, Masters Series events and go further at the Grand Slams. Now I feel I can win tournaments and play well against Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. I think I could win on every surface.

You reached a career-high No. 44 in November last year. How would you compare the way you are playing now and back then?
Yes, I think I’m playing better now than last year. My improvement has been slow, but I’m happy with my biggest weapon: my serve. I have to keep improving in order to beat the top players.

You have had your best results on different surfaces. What would you consider as your favorite surface? And what are the strengths in your game?
After this week, that's a tough question. When you win a title on clay, they say you should keep playing on the surface. I like hard courts.

How would you look at the state of Argentine tennis right now?
I’m stronger than yesterday or last week, but Argentina has players that can compete on every surface. [Agustin] Calleri or someone might win the next tournament. We all try our best and hope to win many titles for Argentina.

Who introduced you and got you started in tennis? And is there anyone who has really helped you get where you are today?
I used to play football, so the coach who trained at the same club gave me a racquet. I played with some other children and that’s how I started. When I won today, I was thinking about my family and friends who have helped me to reach this level.

Was there any player(s) you admired and looked up to while growing up?
I really admired Lleyton Hewitt growing up. I’d love to achieve what he has done. For me, he is the best.

00:13 | STUTTGART: DEL POTRO CAMPEON
Fierrazo

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/8343/delpotrokitzbuhel7nm3.jpg
© ATP

Seventh-seeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro (pictured) capped a marvelous two weeks by defeating No. 6 seed and home favorite Jurgen Melzer 6-2, 6-1 at the Austrian Open in Kitzbuhel on Sunday to capture his second straight ATP singles title.

Last week, the 19-year-old del Potro claimed his maiden ATP singles title at Stuttgart, defeating World No. 15 Richard Gasquet in the final. He becomes just the second player after Rafael Nadal (Monte-Carlo – Barcelona; Roland Garros – Queen’s Club) to win back-to-back ATP tournaments this season.

"It's another dream for me, another tournament," said del Potro. "In two weeks I played ten matches and won all of them. This week I didn't lose a set so I'm very happy. I have served very well both weeks and I think I changed a little bit my mind, I was always concentrating. When you play big matches you have to be focused all the time and now I am getting focused on the important points and that's the difference."

The Tandil resident also becomes the fourth consecutive Argentine winner at Kitzbuhel, joining Juan Monaco (2007), Agustin Calleri (’06) and Gaston Gaudio (‘05). Guillermo Coria’s victory in 2003 makes del Potro the fifth Argentine winner in the past six years.

The Argentine is now projected to move up into the Top 30 of the South African Airways ATP Rankings for the first time. "I have to continue in this way, I don't have to change anything so I'm just going to work and work and wait for more results," said del Potro.

The right-hander, who is making his event debut in Kitzbuhel, capitalized on five of 10 break point opportunities against Melzer, breaking twice in the first set and three times in the second, and dropped just six points on serve throughout in a stunning performance as he cruised to victory in just 59 minutes. His tournament record now stands at 5-0.

Currently level with his career-high at No. 44 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, del Potro has also made a semifinal exit at ‘s-Hertogenbosch (l. to Ferrer) and a quarterfinal appearance in Munich (l. to El Aynaoui) to add to his two titles. He improves his season match record to 19-8.

The 27-year-old Melzer slips to a 1-6 lifetime record in ATP singles finals; his lone victory came at 2006 Bucharest (d. Volandri). He was contesting his first final since 2007 Las Vegas, where he finished runner-up to Lleyton Hewitt.

The Vienna native is the first Austrian to reach the Kitzbuhel singles final since Thomas Muster finished runner-up to Albert Costa in 1995. The left-hander was bidding to become the first home champion since Muster’s triumph in 1993.

"Of course it's disappointing to lose a final, especially when it's at home, but Juan Martin played unbelievably, he didn't miss a ball and I was struggling from the beginning," confessed Melzer. "6-2, 6-1 is a tough loss, but I think he deserves it. I've always struggled to play in Kitzbuhel and being in the final this year is a very special thing for me and having had the chance to take the title home would have been really great."

World No. 65 Melzer, who made quarterfinal exits at Poertschach (l. Kunistyn) and ‘s-Hertogenbosch (l. to Gicquel) earlier in the season, slips to 18-18 for the season. He has now lost his past 14 of 16 matches against Argentine opponents, and has slumped to three straight losses against del Potro.

Congratulations Juan!!! :woohoo: :woohoo:
