Another great tourney for Fed (as expected).
A win #9 for the season.
But I think Tim Henman and Takao Suzuki stole much of the show.
Big props to all of them!

Congrats on Federer winning and Tim reaching the final :)

If only Tim would start getting decent draws in slams and stop meeting Federer every second round...

6 matches and 15 sets in a row against Tim Henman. Yet there still seems this view that Federer struggles against serve and volley players.

Why just eleven? He has four events left, I think, and he's been winning 2/3 on average since 2004 (a little better now after Tokyo, I guess), so you would hope he betters his average, not worsens it, no?

Adler
10-08-2006, 10:35 AM
Well, he's got the opportunity that's true, but I'm almost sure he will drop Paris if he wins in Basel and there;s always chance that Rafa can defeat him in a final

I would be very surprised if he plays madrid basel and paris. I think Roger would also be very happy with 11 victories this year

He won't miss Basel unless he is really injured, but I could see him missing Paris.

Plus the Masters Cup in Shanghai.
But I think playing in Madrid, Basel and Paris is too much for him. I doubt he wins them all. Plus there's a risk of injury.
If he really wants to play in Basel, he should skip either Madrid or Paris.
To me, I would prefer he plays Madrid and Paris and skip Basel. In fact, winning in Paris is always special and will motivate him to win the French Open in 2007.
I think the ATP should really move Basel two weeks before Madrid just to let Roger win in his home city.

Are you from Basel? He used to be a ballboy at the event, he loves FC Basel and he would love to win this event, which is something he hasn't done. He doesn't need to play Bercy, two events are enough.

That's a pretty sad looking runner-up trophy/plate. Surely they can do better than that.

Congrats Roger! :yeah: Nice way to cap off your first trip to Japan. BTW, he now joins the select group of players who win the tournament that they first blog in?

For 1 week's work Tim gets a plate as small as that!

It's unfortunate the runner-up trophy has always been that miniscule  But I'm sure Tim got more out of this tournament - he's reached a final after a disasterous season and gets a nice pay-cheque as well. Not bad for one week's effort ;)

Nice that the organizers gave Federer a brand new spaceship, as he is out of this world. It is a bit small, though.

And the BBC are closing the board down in November - not surprisingly - (though they've got another general board lined up).

Congrats to Roger for his 9th tournament victory this year :)
What an achievement: To reach 13 finals of the 14 tournaments he had played this year :worship:

I feel a bit sorry for Tim that he had to play against Roger in the final. He didn't lost a set throughout the whole week and then didn't stand a chance in the final.

With the victory Roger now leads 7:6 in the head to head against Tim :)

Some words from Tim about Roger after the final:

Asked after the match which elements of Federer's game are hard to notice without playing against him, Henman said "the consistency and variation of his first and second serves and his athleticism -- not only how fast he is moving to the ball, but his balance and footwork moving around the ball."
Asked to compare Federer to Pete Sampras, Henman said, "He has a more complete game than Sampras. Sampras had a bigger first and second serve. In the conditions Pete was playing, it was easier to be more aggressive all the time. Now with the courts and the balls much slower, Roger is so effective because he has so many attributes to his game."
Asked how long Federer can stay No. 1, Henman said, "I think it will still be a few years. One question when you get older is health. His game is economical. It doesn't take a lot of stress out of him. So I wouldn't be surprised if he's on top of the game for a few years yet."

So Tim Henman is convinced the courts are slower and the balls slower.

which would be unfortunate as its a great event.
