Too much drama, Marat :cuckoo:

Had BP in the second set to break first but got broken instead and one more to break when Blake was serving for the set but didn't take it either. Led by a break in the third and then went 0-40 down in the next game and got broken back. Got broken at 5-5, played 4 superb points to take it to a TB and then goes 0-4 down. :help:

What's most shocking to me is how awfully Marat played to go 0-4 down in the TB after he played so wonderfully in the previous game to break back. :o

A match decided by 1 game.

Safin failed to break at 2-1 in second set when he had a break point. He was never the same after that point.

Both very talented but also very mentally fragile it was bound to swing one way then the other.

Congrats James :worship:

It was 'bounder' to swing in James direction. All of us Safin fans knew it.

at least Blake can need the result also to secure his Masters Cup participation

I thought he was too conservative after going up a break in the third and only started to loosen up at 5-6.

I think he tried different approaches. Remember, he tried to win by one hit in the second set? Then he strated playing conservative and keep the ball in.... He should have returned break earlier in the 3d set and then he would not do that poor in the beginning of the tb....
O, well-- good news is he wants to play well.... :wavey:

OMG! Congratulations, James.

I just woke up and didn't realize they had played already. Love them both but I really wanted James to win more.

Strange that James' wins are seldom posted in this forum and I'm sure if it hadn't been for the fact that he played Marat history would have repeated itself.

Good luck in the final, James, against Ljubicic, who's putting a real beating on P'dorn right now.

Good for you!

Bad luck that Safin not get in good forum for some time long now already. One way is he is getting injured and has set-back and other is his own fault that he has not strong enough mind and willness to work to make the best from his body and talent he has in himself. With the game and pyhsics he has, he should be top 3 player his entire career many times many years before players like Hewitt, Roddick or Federer.

A good tourney for Safin. I still think the match was his to close out, but I'll take the positives from it. The rustiness is shaking off well, and he's starting to play like his old self again, but consistency is what's lacking, and hopefully, with more good tourneys like this week, we'll see him in the top-50 by the end of the season. As for Blake, well he must be thrilled. With Baghs out for 3 weeks, Ancic losing in the QFs in Mumbai, it's looking good for him at the moment for Shanghai.

Congrats James, this reminds me of the 2004 tournament where Marat also lost 7-6 in the 3rd set to Roddick. It was definitely a match he could have won but he has lost worse than that this year.

It is nice to see James winning a close match, he also won against Andy in the final of Indy. It makes one wonder what makes his 5-set record such a disaster.
