Xavier Malisse won't play the davis cup tie against Australia. After Xavier cancelled to play against the United States and the Ukraine he was again welcome by the other players. When he finally also didn't want to play in the Slovak Republic both Olivier Rochus and Kristof Vliegen doesn't want Xavier to play the davis cup match against Australia, although Malisse confirmed yesterday he would like to if the other Belgians are okay with it. (see article, dutch only (http://www.sportwereld.be/Article/Detail.aspx?ArticleID=GAP12DDGS))

Earlier this year Christophe Rochus said he no longer wants to play davis cup in the future. After the US Open he told he's goin' to quit professional tennis soon. (see 'retirement'-thread (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=84907))

For Belgium most likely Olivier Rochus & Kristof Vliegen will play both singles and doubles.

I'm not sure about the Australian team: no news from Hewitt or the Scud yet, but Lleyton playing doubles with Hanley in Adelaide could be an indication they'll also try this combination against Belgium in february...

Pity from Chris, but I heard Steve Darcis is coming back from injury. Maybe he'll be the 4th man to play the tie.

This is a joke Lleyton Hewitt will beat both Kristof Vliegen and Olivier Rochus and with Paul Hanley and Wayne Arthurs playing doubles they will win easily even if the second singles player loses both his matches.

Christophe Rochus confirmed he wants to play Davis Cup again. Previous year he said he would never commit again, but now he says he 'even wants to play for free in Uzbekistan'. :)

And Oli Rochus vs. Chris Guccione's match at the Australian Open ended in a 5th set 9-7 for Olivier. Looks like we'll see a promising rematch in Liège

Mate I wouldn't be getting to excited I was there at the Aussie Open and saw the match Guccione blew him off the court in the first set, the next two sets Oli won 7-5 7-5 and only because he broke both times at 6-5, and in the fifth set Guccione had four match points, I don't think he will let that get past him next time they play he says he wants retribution in his home country.

Some news from the Australian side:

- The federation will name its team on January 30

- Tennis Australia has announced that Darren Cahill has been appointed as Australia's Davis Cup coach for the team's approaching tie against Belgium in February. The former coach of Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi said he was thrilled to be involved once again in Australian tennis, having represented his country in both Davis Cup singles and doubles between 1988-1991. "It's an absolute honour, because Davis Cup is so true to my heart and there is such great history of Davis Cup here in Australia," said Cahill. "It's my strong desire to help Australian tennis, and again, Davis Cup is a platform where I feel like I can make a positive contribution."

- Junior Brydan Klein Klein is being considered for an "orange boy" role with the Australian Davis Cup team for next month's first-round tie in Belgium. "I've heard the talk," he said. "It would mean a lot. "I was scheduled to play a challenger (tournament) in Bernie in Tasmania, but I'd much rather go and get experience practicing with the Davis Cup players and see what it's like."

Lleyton will take out Christophe Rochus, I would expect Guccione to win but I am going to say Olivier just based on the last time they played.

1-1 Doubles Australia will win Paul Hanley and Wayne Arthurs are better than anything Belgium has to offer.

2-1 Australia
Lleyton Hewitt to close it out against Olivier, Guccione will then beat Christophe.

Australia wins 4-1.

Thats what I think will happen.

Geez, that's very optimistic.

The more i think about it, the more i think belgium are going to take this tie. Playing on clay away from home just makes it all the more tougher. I think the doubles might be the only one i expect to win, everything else will be close though. I think the Belgium players should have it over Guccione espcially with Olly beating him the way he did in AO. Lleyton Hewitt is always a question mark with form and lack of match play.

Belgium should be favourites.

Arthurs out of Belgium Davis Cup tie
January 29, 2007

AUSTRALIAN veteran Wayne Arthurs has been ruled out of the Davis Cup tie against Belgium.
Australia plays Belgium in a first-round tie on an indoor clay court in Belgium on February 9 to 11.

A four-man team will be announced tomorrow but Arthurs will not be part of it, a Tennis Australia spokesman said.

The 35-year-old injured his hip during the Australian Open and had to retire from his third-round match against American Mardy Fish.

His unavailability is a blow to Australia's chances, as the veteran has a strong Davis Cup record, with a 10-4 career win-loss count in singles and 8-6 in doubles.

He had partnered Paul Hanley in the doubles in Australia's past three ties, with the pair winning two of their three rubbers.

AUS Team: Lleyton Hewitt, Chris Guccione, Peter Luczak and Paul Hanley

Last Update: Tuesday, January 30, 2007. 1:22pm AEDT

Guccione named for Davis Cup

Lleyton Hewitt, Chris Guccione, Peter Luczak and Paul Hanley have been named in the Australian team for the February 9-11 Davis Cup tie against Belgium.

Australia's non-playing captain John Fitzgerald said Hewitt was certain to fill one of the singles berths and Hanley one of the doubles berths but the other two spots were both wide open for the tie in Liege.

Fitzgerald said he had no doubt Hewitt could handle the workload if he was called upon to play both doubles and singles.

"If anyone can do it in the world, I stand by what I've said the last few years, he's been in my opinion the best Davis Cup player in the world over the last six years," he said.

"So he can handle the workload and he's shown in the past he can if we need him to do so."

Junior Australian Open champion Brydan Klein will accompany the team as a hitting partner. Wayne Arthurs withdrew from the team yesterday with a hip injury.

The tie will be played indoors on clay and Hewitt says the team is expecting a difficult contest.

"It's probably a 50/50 match," he said.

"I'm not sure of their team yet but they've obviously got three top guys in the top 30 or 40 in the world. So on their preferred surface as well, it's not going to be easy for any of us."

Tennis Australia announced last week that Darren Cahill, who coached Hewitt and Andre Agassi to the top of the rankings, had agreed to serve as Australian coach for the tie, replacing Wally Masur.

Roger Rasheed had filled in for Masur last year but withdrew from the job after quitting this month as Hewitt's personal coach.

Losing Wayne Arthurs is a big whole to fill but I think Peter Luczak will fill it well he has had experience as an opening singles player, as has Chris Guccione he has a bit of a reputation for clinching ties, and What can we say about Lleyton Hewitt - amazing comes to mind, maybe he can do well with out a coach for a while. Paul Hanley is an Australian Open semi finalist and a genuine top ten doubles player.

I was impressed with the way Olivier Rochus handled his match against Chris Guccione, the Gooch anhilated him in the first set but Oli kept holding serve through out the match and saved four match points 0-40, I was there the crowd was very disappointed at a wasted oppurtunity. The crowd may be a big factor in this match.

Is there much Australian support in Belgium?

I'm not impressed, I know him... Olivier always has been a true fighter...

That's true JuanRodriguez, but only two results on clay, and not in Belgium... I hope that Belgium guys are ALL really in top form... they will need it...

Obviously Rochus is very good fighter. I rooting for Chris in AO the whole match. It sucks loosing the match after having 4 MPs.(especially at 0-40).
It is on clay court now. On clay oli might win it easily. Hewitt will be the favorite to win against oli as hewitt got a good DC claycourt experience.(beating players like Guga in Brazil.)

It will be close tie.

I agree it will be close and I would have said Belgium are favorites but Xavier Malisse is not playing for them, possibily the worst move Belgium could have made. Xavier Malisse is in career best form, and I know he has problems with the team but it could be Belgium's downfall. Hewitt I think will win both singles matches, and I think Guccione might win one. I'm not sure about the doubles anymore.

Australia has not played Belgium in over 15 years and Belgium have never won a match against Australia, I think that's about to change.

GO AUSTRALIA!!!

I heard in a audio clip from daviscup.com that Chris Guccione will play Olivier Rochus on the opening day they didn't say if it was the first match or second but this means Lleyton Hewitt will probably play Kristof Vliegen on the opening day aswell.

I think it will be 1-1 after day one.

Court low and slow for Davis Cup
07 February 2007
AAP

Australia's Davis Cup team is trying to adapt to a "low, slow" claycourt as it prepares to face Belgium in this week's first round tie.

The visitors had their first hit out on the court at the Country Hall du Sart-Hilman in Liege today and found a surface suited to Belgium's leading player Olivier Rochus, the world No.34.

However, Australian coach John Fitzgerald had no complaints.
"It's a lovely little stadium. It's small, but I think the atmosphere will be quite loud," said Fitzgerald.
"The court is an interesting claycourt.
"It hasn't been down for long, it seems like it has got a wooden base underneath it, so it's a bit softer than the clay that you'd normally play on, particularly on an established outside court.
"So the ball stays a little low, it's a low, slow claycourt, which I'd say has been made to help Olivier (Rochus), but a low court is fine for us."

Australia's No.1 Lleyton Hewitt fares best on faster hard courts but has shown he can also be very competitive on clay.
The Australian team of Hewitt, Chris Guccione, Paul Hanley and Peter Luczak takes on Belgium's Olivier Rochus, Kristof Vliegen, Christophe Rochus and Dick Norman from Friday, seeking a second round match up against either Germany or Croatia.

Long preparation might hold the key
07 February 2007

Lleyton Hewitt and John Fitzgerald believe Australia's long preparation gives the team a great chance of success against Belgium.

With the Optus Australian Davis Cup team having arrived in Liege a week-and-a-half prior to the upcoming first round tie against Belgium, team captain John Fitzgerald and No.1 player Lleyton Hewitt believe the long preparation time will put the team in a strong position going into this weekend's contest.

Hewitt, speaking for the first time since his arrival in Liege, conceded that while it might not be the ideal time of the year to play on clay, the conditions were the same for all players.
"Obviously coming off the Australian Open and playing outdoor events...coming indoors is a big change for us...and coming from the extreme heat in Australia to the cold conditions over here in Belgium in Europe.
“You know they're all things we've all got to adjust to, playing on the tour week, in week out you've got to make small adjustments and it'll probably be the same for both teams.

"It's hard for everyone coming from a different surface, the sliding on clay. I think playing indoors isn't a huge thing. I played a couple of matches at the Australian Open under the roof there as well, so that's not the biggest difference I don't think"
“I feel like all the guys in our team over the last week and a half have done absolutely everything we can do to have the result fall our way over the weekend. We've done everything as well as we could, we've given 100 per cent, we've come over here early in preparation for that. Now we've just got to go out there and execute what we want to do."

With three players in the Belgian team ranked inside the top 75 in the world, Hewitt was predicting a tough contest.
"It's going to be tough. In Davis Cup I've played enough years and enough big ties now to know that every match is hard, there's no foregone conclusions in Davis Cup in any kind of match.

“Obviously Belgium playing at home, and having to qualify [for the World Group] late last year as well, they're extremely hungry to get through to the quarterfinals. We made the semis last year against Argentina and we'll be looking to hopefully go one step further and make the final this year. We feel like we've got the team that can do that.
"Olivier Rochus is a great player. I've grown up alongside him in juniors for a number of years. I'm well aware of the game that he possesses.
“He plays extremely well on a clay court as well so it's not going to be easy for us. 'Gooch' obviously got close to him at the Australian Open though and probably should have had the better of him there.

“If 'Gooch' is going to play him at all over the next few days I think he's going to be out for some revenge and take it to Olivier. Christophe, he's always been a very talented player. Probably hasn't played to his full potential in the past as much as he has the last year or so. He's got a good all round game as well and we expect a tight contest."

Hewitt said he was happy with the clay court form he'd shown during practice.
"I had to rest a little bit for a few days after I lost in Melbourne purely to get my calf and my body 100 per cent before I even thought about getting on the court.
“When I felt 100 per cent physically, that was when I started training and obviously over here, as I said, we all came early...we feel like we've done all the right things so far, it's a matter of us going out there and playing the way we want to play in the next three days.

"I've hit for enough hours in the last week, week and a half now, I'm happy with where my game is at on clay at the moment. Some of my best victories in Davis Cup have come on clay in away ties.
“Beating Costa in Spain and beating Kuerten in Brazil - you don't get much bigger than that. I know what I'm capable of and I know how to do it in big situations when the pressure's on and I look forward to the challenge yet again," he said.

The Official Draw for the tie will take place at 11.30am (Belgian time) on Thursday 8 February.

Hewitt primed for Belgian battle
07 February 2007
AAP

Lleyton Hewitt has prepared well for this weekend's Davis Cup assignment on clay.
A fighting-fit Lleyton Hewitt says the indoor clay courts for Australia's Davis Cup clash with Belgium this week hold no fear for him.

After an extended 10-day preparation in Liege where the first-round tie gets underway on Friday, Hewitt said he was happy with his form and felt confident of leading Australia to victory over the highly-rated Belgians.
He felt his game had adapted well from the rebound ace surface at the Australian Open to the slow clay at Country Hall du Sart-Hilman.

Recalling that some of his biggest Davis Cup victories had come on clay, Hewitt said he was ready for the challenge.
"Beating (Albert) Costa in Spain and beating (Gustavo) Kuerten in Brazil - you don't get much bigger than that," Hewitt said.
"I know what I'm capable of and I know how to do it in big situations when the pressure's on and I look forward to the challenge yet again.
"I've hit for enough hours in the last week, week and a half now.
"I'm happy where my game is on clay at the moment."

As well as the surface change, the Australians have had to adapt to the wintry conditions in Belgium and playing indoors, but Hewitt said the team's preparation had been top-notch.
"It's hard for everyone coming from a different surface, the sliding on clay.
"I think playing indoors isn't a huge thing. I played a couple of matches at the Australian Open under the roof there as well, so that's not the biggest difference.
"I feel like all the guys in our team over the last week and a half have done absolutely everything we can do to have the result fall our way over the weekend."

The former world No.1 said he had fully recovered from the calf injury which hindered his Australian Open campaign and was ready to take it to the Belgians.
"It's going to be tough. In Davis Cup I've played enough years and enough big ties now to know that every match is hard.
"Obviously Belgium playing at home, and having to qualify (for the World Group) late last year as well, they're extremely hungry to get through to the quarter-finals."

While in-form Xavier Malisse has been controversially left out after turning his back on the side last year, world No.34 Olivier Rochus will lead the home attack, along with Kristof Vliegen (41), Christophe Rochus (74) and Dick Norman (126).
The only Australian in the top 100 at 18, Hewitt will be joined by Chris Guccione (109), Peter Luczak (212) and doubles specialist Paul Hanley, who is No.7 in the two-man rankings.

Hewitt said teammate Guccione would be out for revenge against Rochus, who ousted him from the Open.
"'Gooch' obviously got close to him at the Australian Open though and probably should have had the better of him there," Hewitt said.
"If 'Gooch' is going to play him at all over the next few days I think he's going to be out for some revenge and take it to Olivier."
The draw will take place tomorrow.

Hewitt playing doubles !!

The full draw is as follow:

Kristof Vliegen (BEL) v Lleyton Hewitt (AUS)
Olivier Rochus (BEL) v Chris Guccione (AUS)
Dick Norman/Christophe Rochus (BEL) v Paul Hanley/Lleyton Hewitt (AUS)
Olivier Rochus (BEL) v Lleyton Hewitt (AUS)
Kristof Vliegen (BEL) v Chris Guccione (BEL)

I'm pretty sure Dick & Christophe will be replaced in doubles by Kristof & Olivier.

Australian Open Juniors winner Brydan Klein's diary in Liège (from TennisAustralia.com)

Brydan’s Belgium Blog - No.1

No.1 - Thursday 8 February

I had about four days off after the Australian Open where I just hung around and did nothing. On the day we left for Belgium we had the Davis Cup team announcement. That was the first time I met Lleyton properly.

It was an interesting press conference. I only got asked one question, so it was pretty easy. I was just listening to what Lleyton was saying. Later Fitzy picked me up from the hotel to go to the airport. I met all the guys there. They all got put in business class and I was back in economy class! I slept most of the way to London. We got to Liege on Wednesday night and hit the courts the next morning. I hit with Guccione first and then an afternoon session with Hewitt.

I wasn't nervous, it was just normal because they're Australian guys, it was fun and I hit really good. Hitting with Gooch was pretty frustrating because he hits the ball really hard and then he misses a lot, so you can't really practice that well, it's hard to get a rhythm going when you're hitting with him. Hewitt's also frustrating because he never misses, then you feel bad when you miss!
When I hit with Ancic and Federer last year I got nervous. I warmed up Federer at the French Open last year. Tony Roche set that up. I was nervous, because Roger actually had to play a match, he was playing in the semis. We hit for about half an hour or so. I did okay, it wasn't great, I wasn't hitting that well, but he ended up beating Nalbandian.

We go out every night for team dinners. The night before last we went out for Italian which was nice. I've been having a lot of pasta this week, a few steaks too. The dessert's been really good, I've had it pretty much every night.
We had the official dinner last night. It was at a nice place, but the meals were really small! I asked if I could have another steak and so they gave me another one.

I've been getting a lot of help from the support staff here - Andreas, Ian and Lisa - because my body's pretty sore. All the tournaments over the summer mean my knees, my shoulders were really sore, so now I feel really good, but I've still got a cold and I can't stop coughing.
When I'm not hitting I haven't been doing much, just back in the room on the internet, and I've only watched one movie, Gladiator. I haven't talked to mum or dad since I left, but when I get home I always tell them everything
