September 26th, 2006 - Marcos Baghdatis pulls out of Thailand Open with shoulder injury

World #9 and second seed Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus has withdrawn from the tournament at the last minute due to an injury on his right shoulder.

The Cypriot, who clinched his first ATP title in Beijing two weeks ago, said he was injured during practice on Friday.

ďIím a bit disappointed. Iíd like to play here. I hoped it would get better this morning but it didnít,Ē Baghdatis said.

ďMy trainer said it would take three weeks at most to recover. Iím not sure if itís a muscle problem. Iím going home tomorrow so that I can treat this well.Ē

Baghdatis has revealed he was more disappointed to miss the chance to collect points in the INDESIT ATP Race. The top eight finishers will make it to the prestigious Tennis Master Cup in Shanghai in November.

Tournament Director Allon Khakshouri told Baghdatis that it had been an honor to welcome such a world class player like Baghdatis. Khakshouri also added that Baghdatis has tried his best not to announce this last-minute withdrawal in order to play his first Thailand Open.

The Cypriot star said he was hoping to come back next year.

Satoshi Iwabuchi of Japan, ranked 368th in the world, is a lucky loser to replace Baghdatis and takes on Julien Benneteau in the first round starting tomorrow.

This is good news for Ancic, Robredo, and Blake. But out for 3 weeks, this is just terrible. He really needed those race points, before Madrid and Paris.

I feel bad because he's injured, but as I'm cheering for Ancic to play in the MC, that's good news.

Erm, I am a total dunce here of course but I think only one GS WINNER gets to the TMC if he's outside the top 8. The highest ranked GS winner from those outside the top 8.

So is Marcos destined to be one of those players plagued by injury their whole career?

That's sucks! Does Marcos still have a chance to qualify for TMC, even without playing for the next 3 weeks?

Get better soon! But on a more selfish note, this may be James' chance to qualify. Sorry it had to be that way. I'm sure he would have prefered to have legitimately qualified.

Is it me or is he quite prone to injuries, isn't it like the 3rd time this year he's injured himself. Personally I think he's carrying too much junk in the trunk.

That's a shame. Get well soon, Marcos! And yes - he needs to get fit. He can't carry that belly for much longer if he wants to start doing some damage constantly.

As much as I like Marcos and the way he plays, I can't help but think that this guy won't do much in tennis. Yeah, I think its possible that he win at least 1 grand slam before he retires, however with both Federer and Nadal controling the tennis courts, I just don' see him doing something big. His constant injuries and lack of long term physique does not help him at all.

Worst case scenrio, he's out for 3 weeks. Which means he'll be missing Bangok, next week's Tokyo/Metz, and the 3rd week w/Vienna/Stockholm/Moscow(Kremlin Cup). He's back on court just in time for AMS Madrid, then St.Petersburgh/Lyon/Basel, and AMS Paris finally. If he can defend his finalist points in Basel, and have consistent results at the two Masters series remaining, he might just squeeze himself in Shanghai. He should also hope the first two OR the last two -Blake(9), Ancic(10), Robredo(7), Nalbandian(6)- are having the worst month of their careers.

He hasn't officially withdrawn from Tokyo..yet...

After Tokyo he's supposed to play Vienna,Madrid,Lyon and then Paris.
There is still many tournies to collect points for Shangai..if only he gets healthy!!!
