This tournament has been an off-and-on event due, I guess, to the economic situation of the country at the time. For instance, it was cancelled in 1983-84, 89-92, 96-2001.
In the first years of the tournament, it was all-Argentina, all of the time:
Jose-Luis Clerc (2)
Guillermo Vilas
Martin Jaite
In fact, the only upset came when Ivan Lendl beat Vilas in 1981.
In the mid-90s, however, there has been the steady domination by the Spaniards over the Argentines, winning 4/5 finals, with Carlos Moya leading the way with two. On the other hand, Argentina has lost all three finals it participated in, the last being Guillermo Coria's loss to Moya last year.
Anyone want to hedge a bet why the Argentines suddenly can't win this tournament?
