As an aside, I'm going to a couple sessions of this tourney and it'll be my very first live tennis experience ever! (Anyone know how to find out practice schedules and stuff like that?)

Bunk, when will you be in Scottsdale? I may go to the qualifying (1st day) or some day sessions (depends on the schedule).

I fly in on Saturday (qualies day 1) and will be there til the following Sunday. I'll only be at the actual tennis tournament on Wednesday for the day session and Thursday for the night session, though. It's our annual family vacation that week :)

Will your family be in the tournament too? I won't be able to go to any night sessions. Do you know the final will be on ESPN?

the deal I made with my parents is that I would go alone for the Wednesday session (my parents both have back problems and would just have trouble sitting there alllllll day like that) and we're all going to the night session. They're not particularly huge tennis fans anyway. They like it and watch the slams sometimes and stuff but that's about it. So it's actually quite a step for them to take me - but they see me so seldomly now that I think I can get almost anything I want if I beg nicely enough and give them a hug ;)

I'm psyched, I got 3rd row box seats at the end of the long side of the court so basically by the baseline corner. and like I said I've never seen live tennis before!! So I'm hoping to see some of my faves but I'll be pleased with anything :D

and yea yay for ESPN showing it live! I'll be flying back to school that day so I'll have to set the VCR and hope nothing happens all week while I'm gone so it tapes :)

I remembered last year, I was passing the Scottsdale airport not long after the final is over. There was a long line-up of private jets taking off. You may probably able to hitch a ride back to Houston

hahaha!!! luckily I fly out of Phoenix and will be getting there around 9:30am (well before the final starts I would imagine!)

so are you from AZ? or just go for this tourney?

I live in Scottsdale ;)

Are you staying in Scottsdale or Phoenix? If you stay in Scottsdale, check road condition before you leave for Sky Harbor Airport. Loop 101 has been closing around 202 during weekends recently, which is the main route from Scottsdale to the airport. The other freeway to airport, SR51 also has tons of road work and usually, sections of it are closed during weekends too.

OMG LUCKY YOU! (we've been going every year for about 10 years or so, we love it out there so much. We used to go in April when I was still at home in school b/c that's when my break was and now it's in March so that's when we go lol)

We stay in scottsdale, my parents stay for 2 weeks so my mom rents a condo. it's quite nice... we usually stay around the McCormick Ranch area.

THANK YOU for the heads up on 101! I'll tell my mom to check it out beforehand.

Weekdays should be OK on the freeways but weekends are nightmare. Since last summer, there are non-stop road work on all the freeways in Metro Phoenix area. That's a good area you stay.

You won't think I'm lucky during those 100 days of +100 degree temperature in the summer ;)

ok cool, good to know!!!!!

and yea haha we were there one April and it hit 101. It wasn't nearly as bad as 90 in Houston is in August! But yea the heat in the summer is one of the major reasosn why my parents haven't moved out there yet. So instead they like it 13 degrees and the pipes burst and flood the house! :o

Uh.... well what else should they play? It's right before IW, on the same surface, just a 6 hour car ride away. What better preparation is there to get used to playing on outdoor hardcourts under a competitive atmosphere, under fairly similar climate conditions, no less?

Plus, the field is unusually weak this year. Last year, Hewitt won and Flip was runner-up. I don't know why neither of them are playing this year (and since I'm going and they're two of my faves I'm doubly disappointed), but they're not for whatever reason.

And in any case, it's Andy's first time playing (if he plays anyway). My guess is it's on Brad's advice to prepare him well for IW, as was him playing Kooyong instead of Sydney for better AO preparation.

I believe the weakened field is because the tournament is a week earlier than previous year. It is pushed by IW becoming a 2 weeks event. Thus, the tourny lost many European players who will be in Dubai (an ISG). Scottsdale is only an IS event.

aha

OK I looked at the Dubai list and it looks like Mark, David, and Srichaphan are the only three who are skipping Scottsdale for Dubai.. doesn't explain a lot of the other top players who played last year and aren't playing this year, though.

In any case, for whatever reason, I don't blame the American players who've been playing here for a few weeks now, for not making the huge trip to Dubai and instead play a tournament that might be worth a few less points but just makes far more logistical sense.

I mean if you were Andre or Andy where would you play, the UAE or Arizona???? lol... I mean yea, there's not one American male on the Dubai players' list and Fish and Martin are the only two of the top 10 Americans NOT playing Scottsdale, at this point lol.

There is also Rainer Schuettler.

If you look at the ranking, these 4 players are at top 10. Losing 4 top 10 players to another tournament in a 32 players draw is huge, IMO.

Mark was a WC last year. David seeded 3, Paradorn seeded 4 and Rainer seeded 5. Hewitt (1st seed) usually played here and because the change of schedule, Scottsdale lost the women's tournament that Kim played. I bet that's part of the reason for his MIA.

So 4 of the top 5 seeds from last year not showing up this year, including the defending champion.

yea, and defending finalist! I agree, it's very big. and for me sad since I'll be going and would have LOVED to have seen all these players, but, oh well nothing I can do :)

haha well I'm only going to a couple of sessions so there's no guarantee who I'll get to see so I can't count on seeing Andy or any other specific players. Plus, Lleyton, Mark, and Paradorn are three of my faves so I am really sad they're not returning! But several of my faves of the young American guys will be there (except Mardy - he is the only one  ) so it will be good times no matter what :) Plus I think the Bryans are playing too and I would loooooooove to see them in action ;)

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- Four-time champion Andre Agassi has withdrawn from next week's $380,000 Franklin Templeton Classic with a hip injury.

The 33-year-old American, winner of 58 tournament titles won't be starting Monday in a field headed by former world number one Andy Roddick.

"I love this tournament. Scottsdale is a great place to play and I look forward to coming back next year," said the man who lifted his last title in the desert in 2002.

Agassi said he aggravated the hip at this month's event in San Jose where he lost in the semifinals to compatriot Mardy Fish.

Eight-time Grand Slam champion Agassi has the defence of the Miami Masters title starting in a month and said he had been advised to rest.

Roddick is top-seeded at the outdoor hardcourt event and is one of nine U.S. players in the main draw. Five of the top six seeds are also American.

Wow, Andre not taking advantage of events he's previously owned. Guess he needs more time to train for the big ones. Oh well.
