is Marat getting a wc or something?

croat123
02-22-2004, 01:20 AM
marat and goran have two options for getting in: wc or protected ranking (goran's is either 17th or 19th, not sure what marat's is)

Deboogle!.
02-23-2004, 05:39 AM
Shouldn't Marat's ranking be high enough now for entry, or was the cutoff before his ranking moved up?

  Haas not using his protective ranking?

Tommy Haas told me in San Jose that he is hoping to get a wildcard for Indian Wells. Marat will probably be given Kafelnikov's spot in the draw or a wildcard. I think this player list will change just a little bit before the tournament begins, so keep an eye on it.

Safin is not eligible for protected ranking. He wasn't 6 months out of action.

im sure Safin will get in, hes ranked 32

Pim pim should be there too, hes ranked in the top 50 now

The ranking deadline was January 19, so Safin didn't get direct acceptance. He needs a WC to get in.

Yes, he probably does need a wildcard. It's a 96 draw though, and he was ranked what, 86 before the AO? Must have only just missed the cut.

Still he should be fine for Miami.

It's a 96 player draw so there are 79 Direct Acceptances, 12 Qualifiers, and 5 Wildcards. The entry list is based on rankings 42 days (6 weeks) before the tournament.

Usually the tournament has a tendency to give those Wildcards to their own countrymen, but I think IW will give one to Tommy and one to Marat (if they have a clue they will). Joachim Johansson might get one too, you never know. With Kafelnikov off the list and possibly a few others due to injury, some players will move up into the main draw.

Grand Slam, Tennis Masters Series Champions Draw Wild Card Entries Into Pacific Life Open

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 3, 2004 - A healthy mix of well-known veterans and up-and-coming youngsters are among the players awarded wild cards into the Pacific Life Open, as announced today by Tournament Director Charles Pasarell. Established pros such as Alex Corretja, Thomas Enqvist, Tommy Haas, Marat Safin, Alexandra Stevenson and Iva Majoli join youngsters Alex Bogomolov, Tatiana Golovin, Viktoriya Kutuzova and Angela Haynes in the main draw.

The Pacific Life Open, held March 8-21 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, will award a total of 24 wild cards. For the women's event, nine main draw and six qualifying draw entries are provided; on the men's side, the tournament has five main draw and four qualifying draw wild cards available. Qualifying wild cards will be announced prior to the draw selection on Sunday, March 7.

"I've never seen a wild card list with so many outstanding, recognizable and accomplished players," said Pasarell. "Together, they've won more than 60 titles, including 10 Tennis Masters Series events."

The remaining women's main draw wild cards have been awarded to Maria Kirilenko of Russia and Sesil Karatancheva of Bulgaria, with two additional spots to be determined.

Among the most accomplished players on the list are Enqvist, who has won 19 career singles titles, including three Tennis Masters Series wins, and Corretja, winner of 17 crowns, three of them in TMS tournaments. Safin (U.S. Open, 2000) and Majoli (Roland Garros, 1997) are both former Grand Slam champions.

"We have a great history of success with our wild cards," added Pasarell. "I remember giving one to a guy named Sampras one year and another to a guy named Courier, before anyone really knew who they were. Next thing you know, they're winning Grand Slams."

Joachim was two places away, so he will probably get in to the main draw because Kafelnikov is not going and I think there are a few injuries in the direct acceptance list. A few players that were ranked in the low 80's that week (back in January) will probably move up.

Johansson was ranked 90 at the deadline of Jan 19.
The last player in now is Vahaly at #84. There are at least 2 players ahead of Joachim on the waiting list, so I guess he'll have to play quallies, and being the top seed, if he wins 1st round he guaranties himself 1st place on the lucky losers list... presumably in a 96-players draw at least one LL will get in... If a seed withdraws after play has began, the LL will go directly to 2nd round!
