I chose option five, I like Andy Roddick, I think he has a great game and personality. but I don't think he has a great game just yet! Anyways that option is the closest to what I actually feel about Andy! I like him, I think he's great but not my favorite player! That title is reserved for Lleyton :hearts: :hearts:

Probably because the average person is aware of him because he's been hyped quite a lot -- hence the vitriol -- but the people who post on here aren't average tennis fans, we're many steps beyond ;)

I don't like the way he plays tennis...I don't care about his personality and level of maturness.....which by the way is very low.....

it is all about the bad name he gives to tennis.....Tennis is not about hitting hard and make funny faces and strange movements with your mouth.......Tennis is beauty, armony....You just have to have talent for that and make it fun.

I'm pretty indifferent to him, but I do think he too overhyped by the American media when really, he's achieved little if you compare him with the other top players.

mboyle1988
08-23-2002, 05:12 PM
The Media in general are a bunch of goons. You really can't blame Andy for the fact that he is your typical American Generation Y member. He is great for the game because he has a personality. Unfortunately, because he hasn't accomplished alot, Vee and Ree totally hog all the room in the average American's sporting part of the brain not consumed by stupid idiotic Football.

Beat
08-24-2002, 01:00 PM
option 1. definitely.

J. Corwin
12-14-2002, 08:27 PM
I pick the second to last option. I think he has a good personality...but I would change the "great player" to "good player".

Now mind you, I think perhaps maybe he deserved the hype for his rookie year, seeing as how he won 3 titles (which hasn't been done since Sampras who won 4 during his first year was it?)...and got to the QF at the USO and was able to tango with eventual champion Hewitt to 5 sets. Then there's another story for his sophomore year....it's still good, but definitely not up to par.:p Oh well, at least made the year end top 10. *shrugs*

Jess_NZ
12-14-2002, 09:44 PM
I picked Option 5. He may be my favourite tennis player, but I wouldn't say he's got a great game, so that's why I didn't take #4. He's not all-rounded enough but he's slowly improving. Some people think he's not good for the tennis game because he hasn't made his move and hasn;t won any of those "big matches" but he's only 20 and he's only been playing for 2 years. What he's achieved so far is good enough for him and he knows he can improve. He's not the smart-ass you think he is, he's really generous and honest. Actually, he's one guy on the tour that signs something for everyone, some players don't.

It's not his fault, that the media are well lunatics (I couldn't find another word to use ;)) because they expected too much of him early. Anyway that's my opinion. Oh and I think he might need to stick to his day job (that Sabrina episode was painful..he was on for 2 mins :()

i don't knwo why many people hate Andy Roddick??? at least posy the reason why you hate him don't just say "i hate him". frankly i love the guy because he does have a great game, accomplished soooo much in only 2 years, can challenge everyone, even top 10 players, and is really charismatic and takes the timeto spend time with fans, signing things, very nice! oh and don't hate Andy Roddick just because the media beats up on him. if you're like that, then you probably hate all the popular and best players in the world. you an't use the media as an excuse for hating him, it's not his fault. i don'tthink he goes up to tv shows and newspapers and tells them to put his name in. the media uses him a lot because millions and millions of people around the world love the guy and wanna know more about him.

Righteous voice of all. *applaud*

Do you mean, if you don't like Andy, that's because you are a loser who can't stand ppl better and more popular than you? Interesting theory!

You must like them all then, every athlete who's popular and can play a sports. If you dislike anyone of them for whatever reason, you fell right into the loser catagory, just like all those ppl who dislike Andy.:p

Chloe le Bopper
12-20-2002, 06:42 AM
I fail to see the mass confusion when someone doesn't like someone else.

If someone wants to post a big fat thread about how much they despise Ferrero and how his hair bothers them, and this bothers then, and he wore an ugly shirt one day - it would not make a licking difference to me.

I would not go in there and say "oh boohoo, why don't you all adore him like everyone else does but you, boohoo, wah wah". In fact I'd likely do something tongue and cheek, because I get a kick out of that stuff, if it's tasteful.

Anyhow - why the hell do you people care so much, that you create theories on why people don't like him, or demmand to know the "truth".

WTF CARES!

if u were talking about the appaling spelling and grammar mistakes in my thread i do appologize but it'snot my fault, it's my crap @$$ keyboard. my space bar only works if you hit it right in the middle and you have to hit it pretty hard and my 'c' doesn't work 80% of the time and for the spelling mistakes, sorry but my fingers work faster than my mind does so i screw up the order of letter. sorry about that.
and by my thread i don't mean that you're a looser if you hate people that are more popular than you, just that many people hate Andy Roddick just for the fact that he's everywhere. i mean it's not his fault and that shouldn't be a reason for people hating him. and i don't like every popular tennis player. i hate Lleyton because he's kinda rude and doesn't care about who he's playing against and he was kinda racist towards james at the 2001 US Open, i hate Jennifer Capriati beause she swears a lot and thinks she's always better than everyone else, and also Serena becasue she's full of herself. see i hate these people for different reasons and not because they are sooooooo popular and because they are everywhere. just to clear things up:)

If you think people hate Andy only bcos he's hyped up by the media, then, well, I have nothing to say bcos one can't see things clearly when they are in love :p.

First of all, if he has a better and more exciting game, then maybe people will actually enjoy watching him play and not complaining about his overexposure. If he's nearly as good as the media think he is, then it's not a hype, is it? To me, he is no different from Dent, Gambill and other up and coming American tennis players. A big serve that save the day. He just does it better, and his groundy are a little stronger than his fellow American players. I don't doubt that he will improve, he's only 20 and it would be too bad if that's all he has to offer. But right now, it's plain boring and doesn't justify his hyped statue. So I hate the fact that he's at a place where he doesn't deserve to be there. Call me whatever.

Then, getting media attention is one thing, the fact that he feed on those attention is another. Remember "this is my house"? Was it US Open? or a TMS in North America? Excuse me, did he not remembered that he haven't won anything big yet? Sampras has to beat him bad to show the kid not to open his big mouth before he has the right to claim anything.

And the unsportsmanlike behavior, those cramping incidents. I can't tell you whether or not he's faking. But the fact that he can't pay us to believe that he isn't, that tells you something. Even if he is, most of the players won't exaggerate the injury as he did. The fact that he played that card and felt that is part of the game, make me roll my eyes. Give the sports a bad name.

Anyway, athletes should earn admiration bcos of their ability, personality and integrity. He just isn't up to my standard, that's all, call me shallow. But I don't care if he has an angel face or disgusting one, that's what models are for.

I post because I find peoples behavior curious.

Thus, I question their behavior. Because it's interesting.

THe topic is not interesting in the least, but the "omg why do you hate him boohoo" reactions are.

And I'm fairly sure that if people started "bashing" Ferrero, that I wouldn't care. If people want to make fat threads about his ugly dye job, or english - then I could not care less.

I don't know him, I merely admire him.

Thus, unless people are being dumb twats and misquoting him, how am I to defend him against opinions? THat's just a waste of time.

so if you guys hate Roddick, do you also hate Anna Kournikova or the Williams sisters. they are even publicized even more than Andy. i know the williams sisters have won 4 slams a piece, but take into consideration that they've been a pro longer than Roddick and the women peak at a much younger age than the men. just gimme your thought!

Why would everyone who doesn't think Roddick is the greatest shit alive, also not be fond of Anna or the Williams Sisters?

Comparing him to the Williams sisters is pretty amusing lol... yes women do peak younger, but the Williams are number 1 and 2... and as kids they showed a lot of potential, and it certaintly didn't hurt that they were black and from Compton, threatening to kick ass in a lily white sport. That comparison is just SO wrong lol.

REgarding Anna, at last check they were not the same person. LOL Again.

and LOL at you still going on about this.

Iíve explained that itís not the publicity that makes ppl hates Andy, so I donít see the relevance of comparing him to other popular players like the Williams or Anna. But some seem to be unable to look over the publicity issue, or he or she is trying to ignore the other reasons like Iíve already pointed out before?

I do not like to watch the Williams sisters bcos they overpowered everyone so it makes the match boring. I donít really like watching matches with score like 6-0 6-0. In fact, itís true for most of the Top woman players. I like to watch them playing other Top 10 players because they bring out the best of others. Like Amelie against Venus in USO, great match, I enjoyed it. Other than that, Iím indifferent to them as I am indifferent to Capriati. They well deserve all the attention though, since they are simply the best in woman tennis. Few years ago when they got all the hype and no results (before all those Grand Slams), thatís when itís annoying, especially when Richard came out to brag about his daughters when they havenít won anything yet. Now, if publicity is allocated according to result, shouldnít they be on every other second?

As for Anna, I like Anna. But even that, Iím not really interested in watching Anna plays. She looks uninspired sometimes. So I rather see her in the MTV award. Is she overhyped? I dunno. She got the attention because of her look and she definitely live up to it. She can also play good tennis sometimes. But if she got the attention bcos they all think that sheís going to win a lot of Grand Slams in the near future, well, then I would think the hype is unjustified. No disrespect to Anna the player, she is as talented as Patty Schynder and Amelie Mauresmo both are Top 10 material and currently within Top 16. I really like all 3 of them.

So, I donít hate any of these players, simply because their popularity has nothing to do with how likable they are.

Let's face it If Roddick wins a slam it's going to be big news in US- and since most of the big money for tennis, corporate sponsors etc. comes from the American market - Andy is good for everyone. As long as Andy can achieve 10% of the the success that Agassi/Sampras accumulated - then the future of Men's tennis is looking good. Also I hope the game really takes of in Asia- so It was good seeing Paradorn win some tournaments & also the Masters in Shangai. ###Also Roddick is just darn good value~ I thought his animated outburst at USO during Hewitt QF was absoutely a ripper! More of Andy antics is definitely going keep audiences tuned in. C'mon A Rod prove your worth mate!!

I have nothing against him,but when I read fans saying he has a great game and all the hype in media,it just makes me wonder how blind people really are...

for gods sake, the guy doesn't have a return, decent backhand is not in his arsenal, volleying skills..well,what volleying skills, and watching him you feel like he's gona hit himself with that racket of his,or he's gonna trip...oh wait that did happen...

He has an explosive serve and a forceful, energetic personality to go with it, but sometimes you end up thinking that it's all show and bluster to cover up the frequently poor technique that riddles his game. The interesting thing in that final set against El Aynaoui at the AO was that both his backhand and volleying went up by miles, he looked like a seasoned pro in these areas, and the commentators observed that it had a lot to do with the fact that he wasn't worrying too much or getting worked up or anxious about the situation, he was simply playing the match.

And then in the Schuettler semi, he had sustained another injury, which may well be the result of two back-to-back five setters but is also another sign of how he uses up so much physical and mental energy in his matches that it can only be detrimental to his long-term chances in the big events. I think I'll only begin to like him when he manages to win regular matches without making everything seem like such a huge effort... other players know how to play at about 60 or 70% and get past most of their opponents, while he has to be hyper-active and put in 100% all of the time.

I wouldn't go as far as to say I hate Andy, but he definately isn't a favourite of mine - neither for his style of play nor his personality. when he was playing goran at wimbledon (you know, the time he got aced almost 50 times in four sets), he almost broke into tears in the second set. In the third, after getting a break, he put on his "i'm-by-far-the-best-in-the-world" attitude, but reverted back to constantly throwing his raquet and argueing with the ump in the fourth. when goran served for the match, rodDick had a break point. after goran saved it with a ace, roddick threw himself onto the ground and had a temper tantrum (you know, the type concieted 7 year old girls have) and, after goran aced him two more times to finish the match, he went to his towel and actually cried.

Too late. I already posted the article and the interview. Now, I just don't believe anything you say about Andy unless I can verify it for myself.

Unfortunately, you probably have started another lie about Andy right now, and I just don't have the evidence to expose it. Others who want to believe it will pick it up and spread it around. Pretty miserable doings if you ask me.

If someone hadn't been able to expose your previous lie, that might have gone further.

did you see AA Kid's Day today? there was a shot-making charity thing and all the players were hitting forehands. roddick's goal wasn't to hit the target, but to impress the crowd with his power and so he missed just about every forehand he was given into the net or like 5 feet long. all the other players tried their hardest (even anna k.), but i guess showing off is more important than raising money for a charity.

oh yes and thats why he came in 2nd place, you jackass. everyone was trying to show off, even Agassi himself, and plus Andy does loads of charity work, so even if he didn't make the most money today, he still gives A LOT to charities throughout the whole entire year. i bet you didn't know that because you try to live in a bubble and think whatever you say goes

croat123
08-24-2003, 08:36 PM
i'm just saying that 99% of players in his position would have tried to hit a target on every shot, he missed like 10 forehands into the net which he never does in a match. the purpose was to win money for a charity and that didn't appear to be his goal.

geez u don't know how to stop do you. look we ALL know you hate andy, so anything he does you pikc up on it and beat it to death without looking at what the other people did. EVERYONE hit strings of shots in the net, Agassi, Kournikova, and Rubin did it. and AGAIN it really didn't matter if he won the least or the most amount because unlike A LOT of players, Andy gives back and helps charity events and helps raise money, so if he didn't do it here, he was gonna do it elsewhere. and plus this AA kids day was ALSO about having fun and entertaining the crowd as well, and i'm sure thats why everyone wasn't 100% cncentrated on hitting the targets so perfectly

Then there are the ones like Croat, need I explain? Roddick is the JLo of tennis. Completely insufferable.

And I don't think he'll ever dominate. He just doesnt have the game to be the best. Its a tough field out there and he's had a lucky year of it with Marat, Haas, and Agassi out for substantial times. And Hewitt was just a poor shadow of himself, let's face it --God knows Roddicks draws have been ridiculously easy at times.

And with other equally young players breaking out like Coria and Nalbandian, next year should be harder for everyone around. Itll make for an exciting year thats for sure.

Generally I think Roddick`s good for the game of tennis,.and hope he finishes 2003 as Numero Uno, ahead of other worthy contenders Ferrero& Federer.
Now he`s Won US Open I think he should be satisfied, then I want him to lose a few big matches just to make everything balance out more.
Being Patriotic and biased towards Hewitt, I have to say my dream scenario is Rocky Llegs beating A-Rod in AO final 04; scorline 6-7,6-7,7-6,7-6,10-8 going Hewitt`s way for the most unforgetable Grand Slam final in memory. I may be dreaming but it could happen in a few months....

andylover-16,

Similar or exactly the same with only a letter or a little something else to make it different?

If anyone is gonna post on messageboards, why would anyone want a name so similar to someone else, knowing that it's bound to cause some confusion?

One obvious reason I can think of. Unless of course that person was really being what I was being sarcastic about in saying that my copycat was paying me a compliment by copying my username.

I've seen copycats on one of the worst boards around and it's always been done by trolls and sometimes members of a board to cause trouble and try to irritate the one they're copying. The way to deal with copycats is to take it as a compliment instead of the irritation intended.

Who said they look alike? I just said Mandy no Moore tries to imitate Shitney's ugly facial expression while singing? And who cares if they started their career in the same week, month or year? Both sucks at singing, their voices are IRRITATING, and the world would be a nicer place if those two American teeny-hopeless-bopers keep their 'golden' voice to themselves by sticking to singing in their bathrooms!

Why are you defending Mandy Moore? She's soooo not worth the energy. This pop-manufactured princess will be a has-been and God does she deserve to be one. She has an ego the size of Nebraska.

Deboogle!.
12-06-2003, 08:31 PM
I like her, why shouldn't I defend her. I've been a fan for longer than Andy's even been a professional tennis player before you can correlate the two. and she has about as small an ego as any celebrity can have but whatever. My points were irrefutable. She sings live, and she doesn't take her clothes off for magazines. Whether you love her or hate her, those are undeniable facts.

Kiara
12-06-2003, 08:46 PM
IMO(and this is IMO, so DONT attack me for expressing it! )Mandy Moore is one of those celebrities who have loooonnng overstayed her welcome in the limelight she has an average voice granted, she is good looking but only because of her hairstylist+makeup artist+personal shopper who probably travel with her..... and kudos to her for keeping her clothes on
she seems to be so worried about her career longevity, which is why she's branched out into acting and god knows it's only a matter of time till her perfume comes out...... she always looks bored out of her skull at tennis matches except for the moments when the camera zooms in on her and she realises it!
do i like andy roddick? im indifferent!

undomiele
12-06-2003, 10:45 PM
So she doesnt take off her clothes for magazines and sings live, so what? Those "undeniable" facts don't make up for the fact that she lacks talent and real staying power. That was MY point. And Rogicomel's as well as carrot's. I happened to provide the additional *opinion* that she has an ego the size of Nebraska. But youre welcome to have a different opinion on the size of her ego if you want to... but you can hardly expect people NOT to rip her to shreds when her musical talents are up for discussion on this board Bunk. She sucks.

And this has nothing to do with Roddick.

Deboogle!.

I happen to think she's a decent singer. Why do you have to make that sound so criminal?

Fee
12-06-2003, 10:59 PM
Mandy is really cool. I met her at Indian Wells last March and we chatted for quite a while. I sat with her parents during one of Andy's matches in Houston (doubles match that was so crowded we ended up sitting on the ground next to the court). Mandy came off as very genuine and didn't have a big ego at all. It was amazing to watch her handle the crowd that formed around her while she watched Andy practice. She signed every autograph and posed for every picture, despite the intense heat of the day. She thanked everyone for every compliment, even when they got her movies wrong. It was remarkable. I knew nothing about her before that and I was very impressed. We gave her a few little gifts for Andy and she insisted on hearing the story behind them.

I have bought her new album and a friend made a compilation CD for me. I like her voice, I think its very sweet and unassuming and some of her songs are just fantastic. She has more talent than Britney and J.Lo combined, so why shouldn't she have some success. And her acting will only improve as she takes on more roles.

But people make up their minds who to like and who not to like for whatever personal reasons, so be it.

undomiele
12-06-2003, 10:59 PM
Well you didn't say you thought she was a decent singer. That would have been different. You said she was better than Britney because she didnt take her clothes off and sings live. *My* point to that was, so what? that doesnt make her better than Britney when both of them suck in terms of possessing real talent.

I can't believe Im wasting time writing about Mandy.

Truce.

Deboogle!.
12-06-2003, 11:51 PM
ok sorry... my fault. I like Mandy because I like her personality, I like her voice, I like that she sings live, and I like that she stays true to who she is by not going for the shock value of taking her clothes off. You disagree. There I think that's it. Truce :)

Oh and Fee thanks for sharing that story - and what a nice one at that. I don't know that I've ever heard aabout a negative encounter with her, now that I think about it.

I know I said truce and I respect your opinion and all Bunk and Im NOT criticizing MMoore when I say this but the whole clothes issue has always annoyed me. I mean Madonna has always stayed true to herself by taking off her clothes off all the time for the shock value and yet millions of people respect her. Whether or not these singers take their clothes off or not shouldnt really matter as long as theyre perceived to have control over their image.

Now I congratulate Mandy for not violating her inner code and not stripping but if another girl like Christina Aguilera happens to think its part of her personality to be half-naked then who are we to judge her? Judge Christina for her music by all means (and I don't like her) but not for her tendency to take her clothes off. (Though she *does* have awful taste in clothes...) Or is Madonna the only one able to take her clothes off and not be deemed a slut?

This issue has always bothered me.

Millions of people respect her star, whether you're one of those fans or not (and I respect that). But you have to acknowledge that she is one of the most famous people in the world and has been for years. A lot of performing artists-- men and women-- respect her. And she did despite having so-so music. Though her latest stuff isn't as bad as that... her lyrics are terrible tho.

Uhm, hello? Why is this about Mandy Moore??? :topic:
I'm from Belgium (it's a country in Europe for those of you who don't know.. so NOT a part of France or Holland like I've heard some people thought :p ) and to be honest, I've almost never heard of the woman/girl... I mean, I think over here she's more famous for being ANdy Roddick's girlfriend than for being a singer... And even Andy isn't that famous around here so you can figure how famous SHE must be over here... Can't we just talk about tennis or the players or whatever this thread was intended to be about? Thx ;)
