the 22 rounds just finished.. Brownlow medal is in about 3 weeks

iI opened this thread not to discuss who is favorite to win .. but also for us to estimate Round by Round votes for the favorites

there is also Top 3 .. and Top 5 Odds with certain Bookies.. which sometimes represent value .. feel free to discuss them here too

in the last couple of days before .. more odds are available for the Top player at each Club.. we can discuss this here as well

i consider Brownlow Medal one of the most exciting events in the AFL Calender and i am sure that all of you share this with me.

Power, Black or Sherman most votes for the Lions. I'm edging Sherman.

To win, I am hoping West finally gets one he deserved. West will come a place if he doesn't win.

I'm liking Goodes and Goodwin's chances too. Wouldn't surprise me if Goodes wins with another tied count.

J. Brown pulled enough votes in R2 and from R7 -R10 to over take them all. he is my tip for BL highest vote getter.
B. Lions lost most of the games after that with big margins . so they will hardly get any votes

I did full re-count on All Brisbane lions games ..
J. Brown should get 2 votes in round 2 and 3 -3 -3 - 1 from R7 -R10 estimate total 12
Black 3 votes in R2 ..2 votes in R7 , 2 votes in R9 .. 1 vote R12 .. 2 votes 13.. 1vote R20 estimate total 11
as you see most 1 votes can go to other players

very close call ..
i referenced also my votes to Heraldsun player of the year and converted their sytsem of 5-4-3-2-1 into 3-2-1 ..
before conversion S. Black 31 .. J . Brown 26 .. but some of Black's votes are two and ones ..and when converted they became zeros.
i ended up after conversion .. with J. Brown 12 .. Black 13

odds are released at Tab .. Black at 1.9 .. Brown at 2.5 .. Luke power at 4.5
since i am not 100% convinced on Black and there is value at Brown.. might try low stake at Brown

Agree on West, feel like his time is up :) if not he will definetely place top 3 imo!!Goodes chances woudve done him good with no one shining in the Swans line up apart from big bad bustling Barry imo!!

Brownlow Medal Prediction-Scott West/Goodes/Kerr* (* uneligble to win due to suspension ) Nick Rievolt is worth a shot, love the way he plays

Can't really argue with it though

He is the toughest matchup for any coach in the AFL

Goodes is a fantastic player, yes, I will agree with it.

He is hard to match up on, yes, I will agree with it too.

But easily the best player in the AFL at the moment? I will see how he plays in the finals before I make that assessment. If he carries his form into the finals and steps up when Sydney need him most, I will agree with you.

Here are the plays I've already put in. Catch the odds early before they get betted down.

Judd H2H (Cousins) $700@1.55
C.Cornes H2H (K.Cornes) $300@1.85
Bell (Freo) $300@2.50
N.Thompson (Kang) $300@2.10
Dal Santo (Stk) $200@2.10
J.Brown (Bris) $200@2.50
Richardson (Rich) $100@3.25
D.Pearce Group A $200@3.20

Brownlow medal betting is what I wait for each year. I'm pretty meticulous with my mock voting and these are athe plays I feel most confident with. There are a few other bets I want to make but I already have outlayed quite a bit and can't really afford it. (I think the J.Bowden h2h@1.50 and Lucas@1.45 are pretty solid bets. I would've multied them but for some reason they haven't allowed that option).

When I found out that parlaying h2h options were not allowed I must admit I was quite annoyed, since I can hardly see how they contradict each other. I think unlike previous years, this year I think the tab has been the most off. I must admit I almost blown my wad when I saw some of the odds they put out on Tuesday. They had Richo at $11 and the top 3 plays I posted above has been betted down quite significantly.

I'll just post my mock leaderboard for those that may be interested. A lot has been taken into account, such as those who have polled well in the past. I've only betted those where I feel there is a significant lead or supply great value.

Interesting read mate, gl with your plays there

Brownlow is definitely not something I will be betting on - most time you and the umpires have completely different views on how certain players fared during games.

Calculations never work out in Brownlow bossboss, you should know that!whoeva sucks up to the umpire the most, even if it takes going out with the umps sister ;) Poor old King Carey slept with the wrong girl  Cox n Riewolt last yr were robbed of votes, ask Tredrea after a brilliant season not even getting near double figures in the Brownlow

Calculations never work out in Brownlow

i know..it is just an estimate (give ot take) ...I also remember James Hird no getting any votes last year in that game when he hugged that essendon supporter and he was definetly BOG.. chapman and Abbett are very close .. same like Jonathan brown and simon black.. Richardson and Bowden ..Brad johnson and scott west .. no difference
i went with the ones that i think that there is a big gap between the top vote getter and the next one.

Black (best lion) x Bruce (best demon) @ $5.20

Im liking both these guys seasons, both have been consistenly good all year. Black maybe a bit uncertain because of Brisbanes poor season, might miss votes in a few of their losses but should get a lot of 2's and 1's.

Like West for the overall win, but not confident enough to take him.

Oh yeah should be an interesting of nites with the presitgous award to the Best n Fairest player in the league,of course everyone would like to say they have the winner including myself but not everyone agrees!!

Still like my man Scotty West, friggin dropping everyday people are aware of his achievements this yr no doubt!!Goodes/Kerr/Judd will be up there aswell!!Like to see how Nick Riewolt goes this yr believe its even better then his last!!

Brownlow Medal -1.Scott West/2.Adam Goodes/3.Daniel Kerr tied with Chris Judd!!

Gary Ablett 3.65 -Most votes in Geelong :) Absolute blinder of a yr n more importantly was consistent the whole way through!!!

I'm not one to bet on the Brownlow but surely Bell at $2.20 over Kerr is worth a shot given Kerr missed a few games towards the back end of the season whereas Bell was picking up votes left right and centre during Freo's run?

C.Cornes H2H (K.Cornes) $300@1.85

This is the problem with Brownlow, you have to wonder whether the umps are watching the same game. There is no way you can tell me Chad Cornes didn't have any games between Round 3 and Round 19 (so far in the count) where he couldn't pick up one vote!!!!???????????

Whereas Kane seems to be picking up the odd 1 vote here and there. Chad easily had the better season of the the brothers yet the voting outcome will most likely not reflect it.

I only put a few bets on, some won and some lost.

Brown the best Lion I got after many thoughts and reviewing some of our wins, but Bowden the best Tiger I lost.

I also lost Bell the best Docker.

I got on West for a place.

So it was a fairly even night for me.

I was tempted to go with Goodwin but I LEARNT my lesson from last year. Goodwin doesn't do enough to impress the umpires. He'll never poll well unless he holds onto the ball more and is more flashy.

Bolar Bolabi
09-26-2006, 03:36 AM
And I must say - Congratulations Goodes.

It was a close count. I was hoping West would get 3 in Round 22 and Goodes to get 2 and for it to be a tie, but that wasn't the case.

West came close again - I feel sorry for him, but at the same time, he was beaten by a better player.

Yep, that bet cut me real deep. I thought that I would have a massive night yesterday. Thought at least $1000-2000 profit. But when peter bell and chad cornes polled so piss poorly it all turned to the crapper. Ended up with $513, which I would take any day, but just had a supremely confident feeling last night.

In terms of the vote, it is important that we learn a few things from it. What I've learnt so far are:

i) As expected and seen in my tally, Kerr is in the top5 once again. I believe that he is the best poller in the afl. As in that, umpires orgasm over him more than any other player, which includes Judd as well. I thought Cousin was close to lock last year, and put a fair amount on him. And jesus, Kerr gave me a heart attack. I pinned him down for about 9 votes last year and he somehow got 19.

ii) Goodwin never polls well. So even though I had him winning by a fair margin, I would never touch him at any odds. Not even with a steel pole. I thought that Brad Johnson was a bad poller, but this year surprised me.

iii) J.Brown and N.Thompson are the 2 forwards who polls well. Not well so to speak but in that they never get jipped of the votes they deserve. Very tranparent when it comes to the expected total. So if they ever have ripper seasons, don't be shy to put a few bucks on em, even though KPP's don't poll well.

iv) C.Cornes has fallen out of favour with the umps. He polls 22 votes in 2004. Had a few BOG's in 2005 and fails to poll a single vote which was ludicrous. And this year polls a measely 4 votes in what was a very solid season. He reminds me of Carey in his passsion, maybe umps dislike that.

v) C.Bruce has never polled well. There is always much rave and even the false conception that umps love him. But trust me, it hasn't reflected in the amount of votes. Same goes to Riewoldt. Odds always seem to suggest he is really high up there, even though he is a CHF, which suggests that people think that umps love him. But once again, he fails to poll highly.

vi) Anyone notice that in the 2 years Brock McLean has been in the AFL. He has only polled 3 voters? Him and Danyle Pearce will continue to catch the eye of the umps as they are explosive players who can take it out of the pack, much like Kerr and Judd. Those that dish out the ball, unless they are big names, will tend to get looked over.

vii) When you see odds shorten like a mofo, then HIT IT. Unlike american sports, I feel in Australia you WANT the odds shortening. We saw it in N.Thompson and Paul Chapman. Big money was thrown on them and especially in the case of Chapman, even though I thought it was a tight race for the Geelong top votegetter, Chapman won it easily. I thought Ablett had been there best, but he has never polled well. Must be the surname. It is also noted (not sure where, but I remember reading it or hearing it somewhere on night) that over 80% of the money was being put on either West or Goodes. The public did very very well, as I personally didn't give West a shot and didn't think Goodes was that lock to win unlike last year with Cousins.

Bolar Bolabi
09-26-2006, 04:02 AM
I'll be putting some on Brown at the start of the season next year.

The last two years he has polled a lot of votes and he hasn't played much.

When he is on, he is on. And it's worth a gamble for him to play a year without missing many matches with injury.

Not only that, it's worth a gamble for Brisbane to spend more than half the year with more than 26 players available because if we had our full squad available, we'd be playing finals and with our full squad, we'd win more games and Brown will pop out on a few occasions.

What n unbelieveable nite, congrats to Adam Goodes n comiserations to Scott West!!Agree BG there's some incredible results apart from the top 5 was pretty spot on!!
Here are my thoughts on others players, also bossboss congrats on the call with Paul Chapman!!!

Cox had alot better yr last yr and pulled alot more votes!!
Chad Cornes as BG suggested, quite incredible reminds me of another Tredea!!
Poor Old Nick Riewolt the umps dont like!!!
Bolar was spot on with Power incredible how umps must love Simon Black!!
I do feel Gary Ablett should polled more votes!!
Agree with Tyson Edwards as highest Crows vote unlucky i didnt get on him bt if Brett Burton didnt get injured wouldve been a different story!!!
These are only a few that just popped into my head, there are plenty more no doubt but the top poll voters were spot on imho!!!

Sorry to jinx BG but im the Brownlow Curse is on

The after Maths:

I will split my analysis to 2 sections .. one for team by team analysis and the other for overall analysis

Teams alphabetically
Adelaide :
Tyson Edwards 12
Martin Mattner 11
Brett Burton * 10
Simon Goodwin 10
Graham Johncock 9
Mark Ricciuto * 8
Scott Thompson 7
Andrew McLeod 7
Trent Hentschel 5
Nathan Bassett 3
Rhett Biglands 3
Kris Massie 2
Ian Perrie 2
Ken McGregor 2
Matthew Bode 1
Michael Doughty 1

Conclusion : Tyson Edwards usually polls better than Simon Goodwin.. for the second year in a row. Although the odds for top Crow were Goodwin @ 1.18 .. Tyson @ 4
I play Fantasy/Virtual Dreams Teams and I rate Tyson Edwards very very high and he is my team captain (scores double points), but was not confident enough to hit it

Brisbane
Jonathan Brown 13
Simon Black 11
Luke Power 9
Michael Voss 7
Daniel Bradshaw 5
Justin Sherman 4
Jason Akermanis 3
Michael Rischitelli 2
Malcolm Michael 2
Josh Drummond 1

As I predicted J. Brown was a top Lion .. but the votes were too close with Simon Black and nothing separates the too. Definitely J. Brown is worth few dollars before the next season starts.. if he stays out of injury and suspension

Cartlon
Heath Scotland 10
Brendan Fevola * 9
Nick Stevens 8
Lance Whitnall 5
Andrew Walker 3
Kade Simpson 2
Adam Bentick 2
Luke Blackwell 2
Marc Murphy 2
Jarrad Waite 1
Barnaby French 1
Ryan Houlihan 1

Lost my bet on Fevola.. (whom I expected to poll a 3 votes in a game didn’t poll at all while Scotland and Stevens kept getting votes they were not supposed to have usually in a losing side) . which means that votes went to midfielders more than expected

Collingwood
Ben Johnson 11
Dane Swan 11
Paul Licuria 9
Shane O'Bree 9
Heath Shaw 6
Nathan Buckley 5
Anthony Rocca 4
James Clement 4
Alan Didak 4
Leon Davis 2
Josh Fraser 2
Chris Tarrant * 2
Shane Wakelin 2
Guy Richards 1
Ryan Lonie 1
Travis Cloke 1

Everyone know that no votes separates Johnson and Swan..

Essendon
Brent Stanton 7
Scott Lucas 7
Dustin Fletcher 5
James Hird 5
Jason Johnson * 4
Matthew Lloyd 3
Damien Peverill 2
David Hille * 1
Nathan Lovett-Murray * 1
Andrew Lovett * 1

I expected Lucas to win (by a mile after outstanding season) .. but didn’t poll at all in that round 22 game where he booted 8 against WB

Freo
Matthew Pavlich 15
Josh Carr * 12
Brett Peake 10
Peter Bell * 7
Shaun McManus 7
Aaron Sandilands 5
Justin Longmuir 4
Jeff Farmer * 4
Heath Black 3
Ryan Murphy 3
Michael Johnson 2
Paul Hasleby 2
Byron Schammer 2
Roger Hayden 1

No real comments, expect that P. Bell didn’t play a lot ..

Geelong
Paul Chapman 14
Joel Corey 10
Cameron Ling 6
Gary Ablett 5
Cameron Mooney * 4
Jarad Rooke 3
Steven King 3
Jimmy Bartel * 2
Kent kingsley 2
Mathew Stokes 2
Matthew Scarlett * 2
Josh Hunt 1
Matt Egan 1
Darren Milburn 1
Andrew Mackie 1
Corey Enright 1

I expected Chapman to poll that well and be a Top Cat.. but I also expected G. Ablett not to be THAT far behind

Hawthorn
Sam Mitchell 13
Chance Bateman 6
Lance Franklin 5
Mark Williams 5
Shane Crawford 5
Luke Hodge 4
Ben Dixon 3
Trent Croad * 3
Jordan Lewis 2
Campbell Brown 1
Richard Vandenberg * 1
Tim Clarke 1
Brad Sewell 1

Didn’t see lots of Hawthorn games . couldn’t really judge

Kangaroos
Nathan Thompson 13
Brent Harvey 6
Daniel Harris 5
Drew Petrie 5
Shannon Grant 5
Daniel Pratt 3
Adam Simpson 3
Jess Sinclair 2
Daniel Wells 1

I had a nice bet on Thompson to be a top Kangaroos at 2.3 and I was very confident about it.( I even added some more units) .. and finally a FORWARD gets the votes he deserves

Melbourne
Travis Johnstone 11
Cameron Bruce 10
David Neitz 10
Brock McLean * 9
Byron Pickett 5
Adem Yze 5
James McDonald 4
Brad Green * 3
Brad Miller * 3
Russell Robertson 3
Nathan Jones 2
Nathan Carroll 2
Simon Godfrey 2
Aaron Davey 2

I knew it is very close .. I even didn’t bother to count the Melbourne votes at all

Port
Brendon Lade 15
Shaun Burgoyne 15
Danyle Pearce 13
Kane Cornes 7
Peter Burgoyne 5
Chad Cornes 4
Brett Ebert 4
Darryl Wakelin * 1
Josh Mahoney 1
Stuart Dew * 1
Warren Tredrea 1

An outstanding year for both Lade and S. Burgoyne .. Pearce is not far behind
(see remarks later on Overall team score)

Richmond
Troy Simmonds * 11
Matthew Richardson 10
Joel Bowden * 8
Patrick Bowden 6

While every one was looking for H2H between Bowden Brothers and whether Richardson $3 was worth a shot .. Simmonds sneaked in .. I think he was paying something like $5 top be top tiger… Anyway votes were too close

The biggest surprise : I had judd 22 .. kerr 17 .. but kerr polled BOG in R1 and R3 .. I had him for 1 and zero vote (period were Cox dominated)
I should have taken hudd –cousins H2H at 1.55 instead of judd top eagle at 1.7
Other remarks ..i expected Hunter to poll at least 10 votes

Part2 to follow

Overall anaylsis :
Adelaide total is 93
WC Eagles total is 96

Odds were Adelaide 1.55 WC Eagles 2.3

Analysis WC has one more win ..i expected them to poll more .. was not confident enough .. should have done it..

Other side notes : Port, Lions , Cartlon and Essendon totals are more than expected (they polled very well as losing sides)
Freo and St. Kilda , Melbourne , Collingwood were lower than expected.. polled badly while winning

Individual Overall analysis:

West was getting votes.. because Umpires love him or couldn’t find someone outstanding
Expect judd/kerr/Cousins every year to be top 5 material
Forward don’t poll even with bags of 8 (Lucas in R22) .. Nick Riewoldt overall votes.. Barry. Hall , Fevola ..(few exceptions J. Brown , Thompson , Pavlich were match winners when picked BOG.. remember Tredrea 2 years ago)

Good luck .. next year
