Taken from a site I post on, sums up alot of Americans take :

"The Germany game was the first time team USA had problems with shooting and turnovers and they still cruised to an easy win. The US team will easily win this tournament and it seems to me the books will win too because American bettors simply are not betting this tournament at all."

I have abit of a feud (in a respectful way) running with several others at the other site I post and help run. They think the USA will cruise to victory. Obviously I disagree.
How sweet it will be if they don't win.

One word that sums that up and the way they play: arrogance

What I find amusing is that I can gurantee all those people who share those sentiments (the Americans anyway) would not have watched a minute of this tournament nor how other teams play.

They are in the running for a rude shock - whether it be tonight or in the final IMO

Truly impressive stuff, bold but confident betting at its best.

As I said before, this team does not know how to lose - they do the job and do it without the flash of the USA, Spain or Argentina.

Very close and tough unit.

Its a team sport and the Greek teamwork is something all teams from any sport would greatly admire. Unlike the NBA, European and some other global ball is about giving your all, working together to do want it takes to win.

Give me a league with all that over a league with a lack of what I just mentioned and full of massive egos anyday.

dave nz

Some key areas where the likes of Greece and Spain have it over USA hoops IMO :

*Better defensive intensity and systems

*Tougher players esp psychologically

*Play better as a "Team" in a "Team" sport

*Care more about winning and less about entertaining

good_gambler
09-02-2006, 07:05 AM
The last 2 hit the nail on the head.

These American guys are born entertainers.. and when you have C. Anthony, D. Wade and L. James (they are the big three) all in the same side it becomes more personal for them than for the team.
Add to that Kobe would've played - injury ... is that right?

These guys are excellent bball players and stand out for their NBA club week in week out... because there is noone else. That is why there teams often do well.

Way too much ego in the USA team.
In my opinion you'd be better off throwing an NBA side out there to compete as America.

Greece main advantage is in the guards. They are using three playmakers for the point guard, shooting guard, and small forward positions. They are tall enough and versatile enough to play well in any of these positions creating pressure and mismatches.Greece is the ultimate "paspartou" team.

Agree - they have many options so can just rotate them off the floor during a game. Keep in mind they don't even have Zisis available either, incredible depth.

Without doubt as a group Papaloukas, Diamantidis and Spanoulis are the best backcourt in the world at the moment. Greece's problem earlier this tournament has been the fact that they did not get anything offensively from Spanoulis - safe to say he delivered against the Americans though ;) I just hope the Rockets give him a lot of gametime in the upcoming NBA season.
