Well, Ljubicic is not top 3 material! Actually nobody is Top 3 material, right now.

Ljubicic was so passive that I thought I was watching Volandri playing.

Horrible, just horrible!

Feli played well, but a real top 5 player would have beaten him easily.

Discuss this travesty.

To be honest number 3 means nothing in tennis currently as number 1 and 2 are so far ahead of the rest of the back. The following applies:

Federer

Nadal

The rest, No 3 etc., is a sea of mediocrity.

Please. Once TMS Madrid and Paris are over (and hopefully they are stacked fields, not that worthless shit that were TMS events last year so Ivan had it easy) as well as those mini indoor titles Ivan won, he'll fall in the rankings. He's a 15-25 player, no way is he top 3 material. The only reason he got there is because we're in a pretty big transitional phase here. Roddick, Safin and Hewitt have lost it somewhat (though Roddick seems to have gained it back) and the youngsters haven't quite come into their own yet. Once they do, we will actually HAVE a top 10 and players like Ivan Davydenko, Stepanek Robredo will be out.

With Federer and Nadal pushing each other I expect Federer and Nadal to end the year with double the points of number 3. On global basis Federer and Nadal are a class above the rest.

Agreed with favourable crowds and scheduling Roddick becomes a big factor, but he has not won a grand slam or master series outside North America. Having 1 grand slam and 3 master series in the US give him an advantage that neither Federer (nil of the bigger events) or Nadal (Madrid master series which he won) enjoy.

That was not Ivan's finest hour. He will come back to life in the coming indoors season, and he will be in the TMC. It will be interesting to see whether he can have an indoors season like the one last year.

I don't feel that Ljubicic is the worst #3 ever. He simply isn't a superstar or Grand Slam winner material. He's done very well to get where he is in his profession. I respect his skill. People who think he is the worst have no idea of how grueling competitive tennis can be. 10% of it is mechanics and 90% is mental; Ivan obviously had an off day mentally and paid the price for it.

I am a Lopez fan, but I agree with the rest of your statement.

I don't have time to read through this thread, but from what the little I have read, people are making it sound like FeLo only won because Ivan sucked.

Untrue.

I was there for the match. Feli played awesome tennis. And while Ljubicic didn't play at his best, he certainly did not play poorly at all. Far from it.

I don't think that and I know you don't either. But even you would have to conceed (providing you saw the match) that Lopez played extremely well. I have never seen him play better. He really did play to a top 10, maybe even a top 5 standard.

I am not in any way suggesting Lopez is going to be a top 10 player. To achieve a top 10 ranking a player has to bring their best tennis to the court on a fairly regular basis. Feli has certainly not yet indicated he is ready to do that. But he has shown that when he is on he can be a joy to watch, and as a hetrosexual male, I should add that I refer to the style of his tennis not his looks.

People’s Choice: Feliciano Lopez vs. Ivan Ljubicic
By Kamakshi Tandon

Ivan Ljubicic’s 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 defeat by Feliciano Lopez didn’t exactly send shockwaves rippling through the U.S. Open grounds.

Ljubicic himself has said he’s used to going unnoticed. The world No. 3 recently talked about walking into the accreditation office in Gstaad and being asked whether he was a player or a coach. He was the tournament’s top seed.

The bald, innocuous-looking Croatian ascribes his relative anonymity to being a late bloomer. “My feeling is people look at the young players. If you do well when you’re young, then you’re much better known,” he said.

Another reason could be that he has never made a truly memorable run at a Grand Slam event. Even his quarterfinal finish at the Australian Open and semifinal run at the French Open were merely sideshows of more famous performances being crafted by Marcos Baghdatis and Rafael Nadal.

Lopez Wins“The Grand Slams are the biggest events in tennis. That’s not a question,” he said. “[Today’s loss] is definitely not going to help.”

While Ljubicic was lackluster—“Today just nothing was working,” he said—Lopez was confident and steady, approaching the net behind his one-handed slice and also coming up with passing shots at critical moments. He dominated the second set, not losing a single point on serve. “Really?” he said afterwards, looking incredulous. “I didn’t know that. I knew I had no break points [against me] in the match.”

The decisive break in that second set came on a volley winner, an all-court rally in which both players retrieved several shots that should have been winners. In the final set, he broke in the third game and clinched the victory with a second break in the ninth game after Ljubicic sent a forehand long.

The pair were meeting in the first round for the second straight Grand Slam—Ljubicic won their epic Wimbledon encounter last June, 11-9 in the fifth set.

Having had several close-up looks at Lopez’s game this year, Ljubicic isn’t predicting great things for Rafael Nadal’s frequent doubles partner.

“He’s not consistent enough, I think, to be in the Top 10,” Ljubicic said. “To build on the ranking you have to do well on almost every surface and . . . [on a] very consistent basis.”

Lopez, who will begin working with former French Open champion Albert Costa after the U.S. Open, is hoping Costa’s experience will help him to do just that.

He beat Ljubicic in Gstaad and made it to the final, where he lost to Gasquet. (Unfortunately for him, Gasquet is waiting a lot sooner here.)

Ivan is such a joke

When Roddick lost first round last year, they wouldn't stop talking about it. I'm watching a match and the commentators just slip in, "Oh yeah, Ljubicic lost earlier today."

I guess it's because nobody cares

Yes I watched the match, yes LaLo played well, yes I´ve seen him playing better than this. But all in all LaLo bores me to death and if he ever gets into top 5 tennis should be renamed CIRCUS.

Peace

The best thing about tennis is that players don't play to entertain the likes of you and if they bore you, so what. :)
He's not gonna change cause some guy on a message board said he's bored by him.

Vamos! :p

Can somebody remind me why Ljubicic is ranked # 3 in the world??

Grow a brain and look at his results. Quarterfinals at AO, Semifinals at RG, two titles, MS final, and i believe 10 quarterfinals?

I wonder how many people were saying Roddick didnt belong in the top 10 last year... Ljubo has proven himself to be one of the best, on tour and more notably in Davis Cup, so he had a bad day, so do a lot of players.

Grow up people, and stop shitting on him.

The delusional "real #2" loses, good.

The faster Nalby gets back to #3 the better.

Was at the match - all in all Ljubicic actually wasn't bad. His recent arm trouble definitely affected speed, placement, etc. on his serve, and was missing power on his stokes, like a point where he had the chance to put away a couple of smashes that were weakly hit back to F-Lo who got the balls back and went on to win the point with a great passing shot.

F-Lo was off the charts. I have a video of the funny interview he gave after the match.

c'mon you all... Ivan is a great player, and nothing can change it. He lost, so what? Shit happens... Ivan is great person, what is more important than being great player... Who expected Croatia to win DC?? Nobody... Ivan was leader in that... Ivan did it almost alone... Ancic helped a little... So, Ivan is great player, and he apsolutely deserves to be #3 tennis player in the world, Roddick lost last year in 1st round of USO too... SO WHAT?? IT HAPPENS!!! Lopez played great, like Ivan said... I'm Croat, and I'm proud of him... No matter what happens I'll be with him... It's not shame Ivan to lose, it is shame that you all do not understand who is Ivan Ljubicic!!! Like it's easy when you are 27 years old, became #3 in the world?!? And win DC!!! IVAN RULES!!!

Lujubitubu needs some comforting from Jerry Seinfeld/Rubber Ducky.

If he was really your cousin, im pretty sure your ass would be in NYC to see him play.

Why would you make up a story about going on a date with him anyways?

This is like 7th post in this thread where you say nothing, except showing your joy over the result of this match. If you were a LaLo great supporter, I could understand it. But everything points out that you feel joy just because Luby LOST. Did you maybe win some big money betting on LaLo or something?

As for the match: congratz to LaLo. That was a near flawless performance. Too bad he doesn't play like that all the time, or he'd certainly get to top 10.

Also, congratz to Luby. He has that uncanny ability to draw out all the worms, maggots and trolls, to show their nasty fac.. err nicks in threads like this.

I'm also a fan of Ljubicic. All this mindless hatorade directed at him is beyond stupid. Tennis has a point ranking system. He's earned his spot. There's nothing to discuss, really.

Nope. If that was true (Luby 'badmouthing' his fellow players), they wouldn't have selected him to be the president of the ATP Player Council two times in a row. Some people on MTF aren't capable of distinguishing sincerity from insults. What's more, such a mistake is so common these days; I guess it's a product of media hipocrisy, the omnipresent political correctness.
Obviously, tennis players aren't that much affected by the media as tennis fans are. I believe it has something to do with them (players) seeing the media from both sides. They know all too well what an ugly beast it is.
