MyDoom Virus – have you checked/cleaned your computer?

Judging by the volume of crud still flooding our system here at the office, there seem to be a lot of people out there who haven’t.

In case you missed it, MyDoom is a mass-mailing worm that attempts to spread via e-mail and by copying itself to any available shared directories used by Web sites (Kazaa is ont that’s frequently mentioned). The worm harvests addresses from infected machines and also tries to randomly generate or guess likely e-mail addresses to which to send itself.

It was programmed to launch a “denial of service” attack on a specific website a few days ago, but continues to replicate and send itself via email even thought the launch date has passed. Supposedly the virus won’t do much damage to “host” computers, but iinfected systems are still generating a huge amount of bogus email.

So, as a public service (and because I’m tired of this thing bogging down my email), let me suggest that if there is any question in your mind about whether your antivirus has been kept up-to-date and has been protecting your computer, you might want to visit one of the site below to learn about the virus and find tools to scan your computer and make repairs should you find you’re been infected.

Symantec (NortonAntivirus)
