I would like to see david playing agassi in the first round,it would be a good way to get him focused on the tournament from the beggining.

I don´t know if I can agree on that one...it would be a hard match especially as we know he hasn´t always had a great time there..and to play Agassi.....ouch...but you might be right...and he does need focusing!!!

David vs.Marat should be interesting but why does he have to always be in the same draw as Federer,I`m curious to see a match between Dave and Nadal.

Possible 2nd round match with Safin. Should be interesting considering his bad record against Safin. Definitely one of his toughest draws for a while.

I agree with you,I think it`s a good thing he has a tough draw that way he has to be prepared from the begining.

Tough or 'easy' draw, he HAS to prepared from the beginning. I hope he is prepared by now and focused on what he has to do.

Anyway good luck, I don't even know what to expect at this point......

If he survives Safin in a difficult 2nd round clash of 2 mentally unstable, then I'd be really surprised if he gets through Ginepri/Haas or Gonzalez/Murray - all four are in great form!
The nice thing about David these days, no one really expects great things from him anymore - and maybe he can gain his confidence back again after winning couple of tough matches.

David usually has good results when people don`t expect anything from him and falls flat on his face just when you think there`s no way he`ll lose, lets hope he`ll do the same now.

Last year, David lost in first round in Cinn and Canada, and after this he did Qtos in USO. When journalists talk about "candidates" they name David in the last place. I hope he can demostrate them they are wrong

Good news. :yippee:

Was wondering how he was feeling. Obviously he was not recovered in Cincy, even though he said he was better (at least I hope that was not recovered). Anyway hope he really is feeling well and can get in form quickly cuz he has a tough draw.

Good Luck David! Play the way we all know you are capable of playing and we should see you well into the second week.

I've just watched the end of the second set and the tie-break. Of course, he is playing bad. Very, very bad. No confidence, no attitude, no nothing. He threw his racket in disgust after missing an easy shot. David was PLAYER OF THE DAY3 (http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/playerday/20060830.html) !!!! as usopen said.

David Nalbandian was all but done.

The men’s fourth seed fell behind two-sets-to-none to Germany’s Michael Berrer and was suddenly faced with the very real prospect of a first-round exit.

Nalbandian’s play leading up to the US Open hinted that it wouldn’t have been a total shock for him to stumble early in the year’s final Grand Slam. He had turned in consecutive poor showings in US Open Series events this summer, first losing in the first round in Toronto before bowing out in the second round in Cincinnati.

He had also been dealing with a left-side abdominal injury, an ailment that forced him to retire from his semifinal encounter with Roger Federer at the French Open and limited him to just three more tournaments prior to the US Open.

But Nalbandian, who also reached the semifinals at this year’s Australian Open, still entered his first-ever match with Berrer as the heavy favorite. The 26-year-old Berrer, ranked 129th in the world, was making his debut in the event and just his second-ever appearance in a major tournament.

From the start, however, Berrer played like a seasoned Grand Slam veteran, taking it to Nalbandian with a powerful serve and approaching the net as often as possible. In the 10th game Berrer turned the match in his favor, breaking Nalbandian to seize the first set. He followed up by hanging with the Argentine in a tight second set that went to a tiebreak, which Berrer ultimately won after scoring the first five points.

Nalbandian could have easily packed and called it a tournament after such a deflating set defeat. The abdominal injury would have provided him with a nice excuse to fall back on.

But Nalbandian fought on.

Perhaps motivated by nearly capturing the second set, Nalbandian took to the third set with an air of confidence and seemed to gain strength as it wore on. He cruised to a 6-3 victory and appeared to have the mental and physical edge on Berrer, who was losing steam after his initial onslaught.

But the true test came in the fourth set, as Berrer reached back for one last attempt at the first-round upset. In another tightly contested set, it was Nalbandian coming out the victor this time around, outlasting the challenger, 7-5, and evening the match at two sets apiece.

The final set seemed like a formality, with Nalbandian cruising to a 6-2 victory and finishing off a gutsy comeback.

It remains to be seen if Nalbandian’s close call was a sign that he’s playing with some grit in this year’s US Open or that each round will be a struggle. His competitors will no doubt be curious.

And it doesn’t get any easier for Nalbandian, who now moves on to the second round for a date with a former US Open champ, Marat Safin.

and full match on TV prime time, great news!

Can't believe it! I can't wait! However often those highly anticipated matches end up being real bummers. Hope this one doesn't disappoint us.

And hope David rises to the occassion and shows everyone his talent, his passion and his true personality.

Win or loose if David conducts himself anywhere nearly as admirable as Marcos did last night against Agassi, David will be a winner. Of course a win would be great! Know this is a David forum but how impressive was Marcos last night -- thousands cheering his every mistake yet he kept fighting and smiling, never gave up, even through painful cramps.

VAMOS DAVID! Bring your A+ game tonight.

Yes, I'm still speachless after Agassi vs Markos last night, it was one of the greatest matches I ever watched in my life!
It's going to be tough tonight against Safin, David really needs a good start. He can't allow himself dropping sets like in the Berrer match.

We'll he lost but at least he fought for it. Those forehand dropshots are usually quite reliable but this time they brought him down.

I did like what I saw. For a scrappy match, David was constantly applying pressure on rallies from both wings and I feel like his serve has improved a little during this year. He fought back from 0-2 against Berrer and almost duplicated the feat against Safin.

Marat wasn't at his best and especially his movement was quite sloppy towards the end of the match. I can certainly see why he has such a one-sided record against Nalby because his power game leaves no time for point construction and Safin practically never plays slow balls for his opponents to pounce on.

Now go win the Davis Cup, big man.

Mili

Nice match, nice players...but David lost. he fought tough, but he lost stupid point in the wrong moment. So anyway...one more time it's an early goodbye to a tournement. But since David is out...good luck to Safin for further matches!

I was so proud of him for fighting back from 2 sets down but in the decisive tiebreak he made 2 huge errors on very simple shots and they cost him the match.
:awww:

It was important for him to go as far as he possible at the US Open so he could close the gap between him and Ljubicic who had exited the tournament from round 1. But...it wasn't meant to be

Maybe he'll bring us to Shanghai, but if he doesn't change his attitude dramatically, he will end up with another disappointing season. I didn't like at all what I saw: crashing rackets and making stupid shots in the crucial moments of the match: between the legs when he didn't have to, and a drop shot at match point down when he could easily win the point by simply putting it away as Safin was at another side of the court. Literally - I mean it, stupid, immature shots, trying to make things "nicer", trying to impress the crowd. His comeback from 2 sets down was due to Safin's instability, just like his comeback in the first round was due to Berrer's physical condition. Let's be honest.
No, I am extremely disappointed. I desperetely support him, but I feel like he's falling behind, with young guns maturing and raising the game's level. I feel like any top 30 player can beat him on regular basis now. His ranking will fall rapidly, if he doens't change his approach.

Well he nearly pulled off another great escape, but it wasn't to be. I'm proud of the way he played today and there's no disgrace losing to Marat. He's a great player and he deserves a bit of luck after the bad year he has had, even with a little help from Nalbo on MP. What a stupid shot that was especially after all the dropshots he missed.
He's got the Davis Cup and the Masters Cup to look forward to so it can still be a good year for him.

i was thinking the same thing, especially when safin gave him an high ball, nearly a missed lob you know, and he did a dropshot then and he missed instead of simply smashing the ball.

He is wasting his talent. If he would put 100% of his efforts into playing tennis his only real rival would be Roger Federer but he doesn't seem to be motivated enough. His performances since Roland Garros have been mediocre at best. I just hope he'll manage to put himself together soon.

Although he nearly won, Marat is such a bad matchup for Nalbo. Massive serve, massive groundstrokes and a good return so losing to him isn't unexpected. It's a shame they had to meet so early on but that's life.

I watched all the match and David played really bad the 2 first sets. Marat played bad too, but better than David. ( he said it was because of the wind).
The following set are better but not the best. David played really under his level. Sometimes I think he boycotts himself. It is one on a few times he lost in first rounds of GS without any injurie. What's a pity.We will have to wait next year. I'm sure he will win a GS , but I'm not sure when????????????

GinaB, I can't agree more. Waste of talent is a perfect description of what's happening with David. He's a player of great potential, but weak mentally and does nothing or very little to overcome this mental weakness. He really needs some serious help, and hopefully he'll come across someone who will guide him in the right direcition. Perhaps he's a late bloomer...

He sure deserves one every now and then if he doesn't get his act straight.

Perhaps he's a late bloomer...
Perhaps... He sure is an unpredictable caracter. But I'm not sure he can afford to be a late bloomer given the male tennis' current state. There are a lot of young men willing and more than able to make a name for themselves. David is in his prime. Not too old to battle the youngsters and not inexperienced either. One may say he is... just right :)
I'm not exacly sure he should miss this opportunity. He needs to ride the wave.

I wish I had seen this match as I wanted David to win altho I have a love-hate relationship w Maratski... I just wish David w take his ranking more seriously and make a run for it. It's amazing, but some 4-5 years ago they were about equal, talent and potential wise. Roger is #1 in the world because of his attitude, hard work, and right decisions taken in his professional career. David, unfortunately, is nowhere near. And, GinaB - you're right - with all these young guns coming up rapidly, David will find himself outside top 10, and maybe top 20 in no time. The game's level is surprisingly different now as compared to even 6 months ago...
