Thiago "Cabelo" Alves

Thiago deserves a thread of his own, don't know how many people will post here, but what the hell...

He has just won his fourth career challenger title in Manta, Ecuador, and is currently ranked at 122, with great possibilities of finishing the year in the top 100. He had a good career as a junior but in 2003, when he was climbing up the rankings, he had a severe shoulder injury that kept him sidelined for 12 months. He then came back in mid 2004 without an ATP ranking and had to start over winning futures, then in 2005 he made the transition to challenger level winning two titles in Ecuador. This year he won the title in Belo Horizonte as well.

And he supports Sao Paulo FC which is a good thing.

For basic info visit his ATP profile page here.

Thiago defeated Paolo Lorenzi in the third round of the US Open qualies and got into his first Grand Slam main draw! :woohoo:

He has won 13 out of his last 14 matches.

Parabens Thiago!

WTC Thiago!

I have been following him since his return from shoulder injury. At first I though he might break into top 100 in 2005. Unfortunately, that's not the case.

May be his first appearance in USO will push his career to the next step.

And his first round match is a winnable one vs Zabaleta.

It's a tough one for me as Mariano is my favourite too

08-28-2006, 09:32 PM
Sorry Thiago, vs everybody else I would have cheered for you. But as Mariano is by far my #1 favorite, you'll have to live without my support today. Anyway I wish you a good match, and I promise you, in case you win against Mariano I will support you in the next rounds.

Alves def. Zabaleta 6-2 7-5 6-7(5) 6-3 :rocker2:

This result could put him in the top 100. :D

Sorry for the Zabaleta fans.

08-29-2006, 12:59 AM
:rocker2: Thiago

I take it as a win-win situation for me: one of my fav advance instead of a lose-lose: one of my fav lost.

08-31-2006, 06:59 PM
Thiago lost to Verdasco, 7-6(3) 6-4 6-1

Managed to keep it close for the first two sets though. He needs more experience in these kind of matches.

Good run in the USO and hopefully he carries this form to the remainder of the season.

Thiago advanced to the semis of the Belem challenger today by beating his countryman Andre Ghem 7-6(3) 7-5. The good news is that he's now the Brazilian no. 1, and most importantly, the newest Brazilian in the top 100. :worship:

09-15-2006, 03:14 AM
Congrats to Thiago for his run of late. Very impressive! :D

Btw, it really is wild how often these Brazilians play each other in these South America challengers!

09-15-2006, 10:42 AM
Well, in most of these challengers (at least in Brazil) there are often most of the players Brazilians.

09-15-2006, 12:52 PM
Yes, there has been a big increase recently in the number of challengers played in Brazil, plus there are probably as many Brazilians at challenger level as Argentines.

And challengers in South America are a bit like challengers in Asia or Australia - players from other continents rarely come.

09-15-2006, 11:41 PM
Oh I know, I experience it in the US. Just interesting that there are so many challengers and challenger level Brazilians now.

09-16-2006, 03:00 AM
Finally, I have been waiting for him to hit top 100 for almost 2 years. :aparty:

Thiago will play the Challenger in São Paulo (try to defend his title) in first week of 2009. He is ranked #113 and is expecting some withdraws to get a direct acceptance to Australian Open. If it not happens, he won't play qualies there and will play Challengers. He is going to play Brasil Open, if his ranking is not enough for a direct acceptance, he plays with a WC, organizers assured.

Thiago Alves recebe o primeiro convite do Brasil Open

Costa do Sauípe (BA) - A Koch Tavares confirmou nesta segunda-feira o primeiro convite do Brasil Open 2009, para o paulista Thiago Alves.

Dr Paulo Ribas), distribuindo US$ 75 mil em prêmios e pontos no ranking mundial.

A Citibank MasterCard Tennis Cup traz o tênis a Campos do Jordão durante duas semanas.
Has been a long time without news on Thiago in this thread so now is a great time to update on his career the past few seasons. Thiago finished the 2009 season ranked #149th after winning Campos do Jordao and reaching a career-high 88 during the summer. After struggling to end 2009 he started 2010 on a strong note, making semifinals in two of his first three challengers, on hard court and clay respectively, qualifying for Indian Wells, before making a SF and F in two more hard court challengers to raise his ranking to #105. He qualified for the French Open, beating Gaudio in the process before losing to Fernando Gonzalez, and in August he made the finals of another hardcourt challenger in Salvador, Brazil. He finished 2010 ranked #150 as his results outside of the final in Salvador were poor the second-half of the season.

In 2011, Thiago struggled early and suffered with injuries that took him off the tour for an extended period of time throughout the year. He made one futures final the first half of the season, but his ranking fell all the way to #553 in late September, before having a good run of form to end the season. He won two futures titles, made the QF of two others and made the SF of the Sao Jose Do Rio Preto challenger, to raise his ranking to #343 to end the season.

This season has started out wonderfully for Thiago. He has won two challengers this season------in Sao Paulo to start the season and in Guadalajara a few weeks ago. He also made the SF of Florianopolis and has risen his ranking all the way to a provisional ranking of #159! With as little as he has to defend until the last quarter of the season, getting into the top 100 is possible for Thiago if he continues his great form; hopefully he is able to do so, as he has earned such a position with all the setbacks he has had to endure in his career.

Thiago is playing in Blumenau this week. As the #6 seed, he won his R1 match over Andreozzi 6-4 6-4. He plays talented young player Dzumhur in R2 today, it's a potentially dangerous match. Hopefully Thiago comes through with the victory.

Thiago won his R2 match over Dzumhur 6-4 6-2, but lost in the QF to Kavcic 4-6 2-6 yesterday. He was up a break in the first set, but he fell down trying to hit a low volley. After the incident, he was not the same player. Unfortunate loss but with his QF result, Thiago has moved up to #151 in the world, so he's almost top 150! All in all, he's having an amazing season after being hurt and off tour for almost all of 2011.

His next tournament is Santos next week, wish for more success in Brazil!
