Last year he reached the third round in Flushing Meadows!

Seeded :worship:

At least no Federer in the first round :D

Or second. Or third.

Do any of these possible third round match-ups excite anyone?

Stepanek (to avenge only final set tie-break loss)
Roddick (bad match-up for Nole, methinks)
Gonzalez (RG rematch)
Ancic (USO rematch)
Ferrer (only meeting in 2004 on clay)
Berdych (never played)
Nieminen (Nole should be large favorite)
Haas (another RG rematch)

if Ancic drops out,

Hewitt

Hmmm. I knew Nole had played many top players, but I didn't think it was almost all of them.

uglyamerican

And don't say, "I don't want to think that far ahead," or "aren't you getting ahead of yourself." Don't be a pooper.

uglyamerican
08-21-2006, 01:54 AM
And then there's the possibility that Novak slots against Ancic in the third round, Ancic withdraws late, and Novak gets the 33rd seed, Bjorkman.

If Ancic did play, I'd love Nole to be in his section. :p I doubt after being off so many weeks that Ancic would make the 3rd round.

Stepanek or Nieminen would be good as well.

Is anyone else scared of Mardy Fish in round 2 because erm... I am. I'm very scared. Mardy Fish... in America... will probably be in a stadium... I don't like it one bit. Mardy plays his best on his home soil and I've seen him play this summer and he looked good. I've also seen Nole play and he was far from his best. So, once Nole gets past THAT I'll look further down his draw but for right now I'm not looking past Mardy.

Fish could be challenging. Novak certainly shouldn't look past him. Mardy has played relatively well, but Gonzo didn't have much trouble exploiting his weaknesses. It's certainly possible that Fish could beat Nole, but if Nole were to play his best he would win in 3 sets.

I am not concerned for him as long as he is healthy and has a positive approach to the game because his skills are there . Yes, Mardy is dangerous and not to be taken lightly but I am confident that Novak can win. Right now I feel he has a chance against anybody but on the other hand I don't expect him to win big games. It's just about growing and learning at this point .

You missed Hewitt. But he's VERY doubtfull since he was injured.Anyway I think he'll play but won't be at 100% so I think he's pretty much beatable.I wanted to say that when i saw seed list this was EXACTLY the draw that I wanted for him.EXACTLY.I wanted easy first round and he got it with Young.I wanted fairly tougher second and he got it with Mardy. And then I wanted EXACTLY this:
Hewitt
Ljubo
Roddick
Nadal
Federer

And that's EXACTLY how it was :) .I hope he's healthy and capable to play at his best.If he is he'll go deep...

www.usopen.org

Slotted into perhaps the toughest quarter of the men’s draw, Agassi and Roddick will have to contend with No. 3 Ivan Ljubicic, former US Open champion and No. 15 seed Lleyton Hewitt and No. 20 Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

Hewitt and Djokovic could potentially meet up in Round 3, which could be a problem for Hewitt, according to McEnroe.

“Hewitt is a huge question mark,” McEnroe said. “I’d be very surprised if Djokovic doesn’t get through the third round.”

Awwwww good :smooch: I was so sad. I went to qualies today and he was so frustrated and out of 100 people I was the only one clapping for him. :tape: And therefore whenever he won a point he looked at me. :inlove: I think he recognized me from Cincy. But the linespeople were AWFUL. The chair was also awful.. incorrectly overruling things. I was sitting right on the baseline and had a pretty good view of a lot of these awful calls. Viktor was furious. She overruled a point that gave Kubot a break point and that was the end of it for him. :( He was soooo frustrated and disappointed and I just wanted to comfort him  I don't know when I'll get to see Viktor again.

It was sickening watching Amer Delic today though. I watched a few games and cried, he was playing like such crap. Viktor would have kicked his ass.

Let's be realistic that his physical issues have not cost him many matches, but rather only a handful. Let us count them together on one hand...

vs. Coria RG 2005
vs. Wawrinka Umag 2006

People say it wasn't an issue in his Cincy match against Serra who were there in person. He WON the Nieminen match when he had problems and also the Monfils match last year at USO. This is talking about his breathing, not shoulder or arm issues that have bothered him elsewhere.

It's not like every tournament he has problems that make it impossible to finish. He finishes a majority of the matches he plays without any issues whatsoever. Let's not overexaggerate please.

I know he lost against Stepanek in Rotterdam due to something physical, I watched it ,it wasn't heat but something related. And of course who can forget Nadal match @ RG and Ancic match @ Wimbledon wasn't really clean for him either .

Other matches I haven't seen but suspect of him losing due to physical issues is in AO vs Goldstein, Coria @ Miami and 2 matches on clay in Barcelona and Rome against obscure claycourters. I think I followed all these matches through scoreboard and what was a similarity in all of them is quick and precipitous losing of games after leding in most of them .

20- NOVAK DJOKOVIC V. DONALD YOUNG

Do you know what I like about U.S. phenom Young? He's keeping his nose to grindstone, even when he's been told that he's been brought up too fast. You have to love his willingness to go back to the juniors, compete in the USTA Super National 18s earlier this month and win it again. When the going gets tough, he's not afraid to turn over the drawing board and test himself against his peers. That attitude highlights a very competitive spirit.

The young lefty does have weapons, starting with his touch, speed and a decent forehand. But he's nowhere close to Serbian teen Djokovic's level yet, as the righty has huge weapons from the backcourt, moves well and has already showed himself to be comfortable playing the big boys. Unfortunately for Young, the Serb is just the type of player he doesn't want to face: a mentally and technically steady sort who can torch the ball. Young will acquit himself well, but will won't win a set.

MARDY FISH V. SIMON GRUEL

Two years ago, Olympic silver medalist Fish came into this tournament red hot and with the hopes of storming to the second week. How things can change very quickly. A brutal wrist injury took him out of play most of last year and part of this year, but the all-courter has done a nice job of working his way back into the top 60. Now will see whether or not his coach, Todd Martin, can instill enough confidence in him to make a minor run here. Fish certainly has the physical tools to do so, it's whether he believes that he belongs back in the top 20 again that matters.

Greul is a German grinder who has posted some decent results on the Challenger circuit this year, but has down little else that's impressive. This is a perfect match-up for Fish if he comes out firing and makes sure to take advantage of his solid volleying skills and excellent returns. Fish will win this match in four sets, but we will really know where his level is when he faces Djokovic in the second round.

The good news is that there should no rain delays or minimal possibility of one, the bad news is that humidity may be an issue :(

I know about the media hype in the US etc. But what has he actually said?

That people don't like him because he's better. That it's okay if people beat him in pros, he can go back to juniors and crush everyone. Etc. Etc. He's a total ass.

i think that we shouldnt be worried about nole's match vs Fish cause lost set against Young was just because nole was nervous, u all saw how he gave lesson to young after it. He didnt give him any chance! nole made a lot of unforced erros which is the result of aggressive game.... but as he said, he should take only positive things from match and go into second round more focused and selfconfident! i think it was also a litle bit of presure on him cause we were all expecting from him to win easily first round....

jess dont worry, everything is going to be allright.... kiss
