taremi
02-09-2004, 04:53 PM
Ulla, are they Danish or something? I don't understand... But I have studied Northern Europe languages when I was a kid. Although I forgot most of them now. I guess, you say that "Do you speak/understand Norwegian, Hangdog? Call me Ulla." in English.... Wrong? lol :p

ubrunjensen
02-09-2004, 05:00 PM
Amazing! It will always astonish me that people from foreign countries actually do study Danish and/or other Nordic languages! Yes, you're right, LOL, I say "Are you from Norway, Hangdog, just call me Ulla"!!!
Why did you learn Nordic languages, Taremi?

taremi
02-09-2004, 08:02 PM
The Reason? LOL... It was so funny Reason. When I was a kid, I liked some rock bands/musicians from Sweden and Norway. For example, called Europe, Yngwie Malmsteen and John Norum etc.....:music: (Some Northern European rock/pop musics are popular in my country.;) ) However they had always sung in English, but I was interested in Nordic languages! lol That's all.:p I still remember that when I heard that pronunciations for the first time, it was sooooooooo exciting!!!!!
Oh! This is a Seb/tennis thread...I must stop here!! :tape: LOL.... Vi ses, Ulla!

I assure you that when spoken Danish is nothing like Dutch! Written Dutch can look a bit like German, so I sometimes understand a word or two, but don't seem to be able to get a whole sentence! Anyway, my German's crap, I learnt it at school, but was never any good at it. The grammar has remained a mystery to me! I can read and understand Swedish and Norwegian if I make an effort and if they speak slowly and distinctly. And then I speak Spanish at an okay level (not nearly as good as I used to be!) and English - which I'm going to teach very soon!
I think Chinese and Japanese are beautiful written languages. They look so elegant - much better than our letters in the west!

Lizan and I were saying that Danish looks a lot like the Frisian language (which, however, neither of us understands lol).

There's a difference between Dutch and Frisian? Oh, didn't know that...

ubrunjensen

Kelly, I envy you! Short sleeved tshirts? And you've got wintertime? You should come to Denmark and experience REAL WINTERTIME!!!

There's a difference between Dutch and Frisian? Oh, didn't know that...
Yes! We are a country with two official languages. Old Frisian is closely linked with Old English, if I remember my History of the English Language (HEL) lessons correctly.

Hmm, that would explain if Danish looks a bit like Frisian. We've got a regional dialect (my homwtown) that looks a lot like Old English. Or even Robert Burns kind of Scottish! Mind you, I never learned how to speak my socalled regional dialect (my parents speak it) and I've got a hard time trying to understand it!

wilma
02-10-2004, 09:06 AM
 I didn't know that! Dialects are very interesting; a shame they loose ground (at least they do here). I spoke dialect when I was little, but I can't anymore.

:smash:  WHAT??? Are you suggesting that I get on with real life and concentrate on doing my job instead??? But Wilma, I'm already working my butt off preparing for next week's lessons in English & history...I really only check out the forum when I take a break from Danish-Germans war of the 19th century, I swear! ;)
Hmm, true, some of my breaks get a little long  I just hate to miss out on anything!

wilma
