it's almost unfair to be down two sets after such a close match...

come on andre

lsy
01-29-2004, 09:46 AM
Though I don't specially cheer for particular of them in this match, I'm feeling the nerves too. One of those matches you wish neither will lose. Safin really impresses me a lot, not just his game, but also his guts and determination.

MisterQ
01-29-2004, 09:48 AM
Well, at least Andre's doing better than Pete did...

TheBoiledEgg

Marat holds 1-1

this is Andre's FIRST world Class opponent at the Australian Open since 2000

MisterQ
01-29-2004, 09:49 AM
you don't count rafter?

TheBoiledEgg
01-29-2004, 09:53 AM
Rafter was dead on his feet, plus he had a bum shoulder and still took Andre to 5

TheBoiledEgg

asotgod
01-29-2004, 09:55 AM
Good job so far by Marat. The problem here is that Agassi has been overhyped. In the past 3 Oz open he has played, he did not have any opposition or determined player except for Rafter. Another disadvantage he has is the fact that he had an easy draw somewhat and his last opponent, Grosjean did not really give him enough match feel. His and Andy's draw as far as I am concerned was somewhat straightforward. He may have to pay for that now.

lsy
01-29-2004, 10:00 AM
Maybe Andre realy wasn't tested in earlier round so far but don't be too tough on Andre, Safin is playing very well, the first serves (Andre has much trouble even getting to it), groundstrokes, movement. I don't know if any other players can play Safin with that close scorelines today.

undomiele
01-29-2004, 10:00 AM
Safin has been rather fatal to Americans this tournament lol.

Vahaly-Martin-Blake-Roddick and now maybe Agassi???

He'll be the target of a network death squad for sure. :rolls:

MisterQ
01-29-2004, 10:01 AM
Andre could easily be up two sets rather than down.

Safin's a great player, we knew it would be tough.

TheBoiledEgg

asotgod
01-29-2004, 10:05 AM
I am not being harsh on Agassi. It's just pretty annoying when the ESPN network people talk of him as if he is invincible on Rebound Ace. His quality of opponents has determined most of those wins. I like Agassi, like his determination but he just cant hang with the young guys for long. Against Safin, Agassi cannot be punishing anybody really because Safin is so strong off both wings. That's exactly why Federer said Safin is very talented. He cannot be easily overpowered and he can play fine tennis if he wants.

Agassi has been able to get himself out of trouble with his serve. Likewise Safin but Safin is giving him problem because Safin returns flat and powerfully. Anyway, let's hope we can see a fourth set at least. Makes the match more interesting.

Safin breaks...could be decisive, but it's not over yet.

I think tennis academies should have a tape of this match as a key material for course "How to maximize use of two-handed backhand".

My salute to both these players. Andre for fighting back and Safin for his maturity and determination. After losing his temper at the 4th set, he had composed himself and came right back to the match. Amazing how fast and well he moves for a huge man, his physical fitness really impresses me quite a bit, not to mention every other aspects of his play tonight. Very impressive.

Safin or Roger had the toughest matches. They deserved to win it the most. I like JC and wouldn't mind seeing him win but I want either of the first two to win it more. Andre had a cake walk draw and was lucky Grosjean retired. I don't feel sorry for him one bit. Safin is the man, period. :worship:

Good job Marat. So much for the cakewalk draw Agassi and Roddick had. Now, they have paid for that. All the crap from the ESPN network about Agassi being invincible is silenced. Safin has become a giant killer of Americans in this tournament - Vahaly (1st), Todd (3rd), Blake (4th), Roddick (Quarters) and Agassi (Semis).

I doubt Agassi has a chance of winning any of the remaining grand slams this year. I guess his best chance is at the U.S Open. Hopefully, he can win and retire. He's got nothing more to prove. The young guns are set.

Hoping Federer makes it to the final and then we have the two most talented players in the world in the final. That would be an interesting mix of power and finesse.

Me too...but Federer really needs to cut down those UEs he had like in David's match. Safin had hit as many winners with much less errors today.
