Perfect Final: Safin - Federer?

The nice thing about such a final, is that Roger
can read his game real easy and has a good 3-1 record against Marat

so yeah, bit biased

I think this would be the nicest final to watch. Roger needs to be in the final for sure, so that it won't be a big baseline battle like Agassi - Ferrero would be.

I use to like Agassi a lot, but it's just more of the same.

Safin brings some unpredicability, I like that

Ferrero v Agassi final would be the most boring

Agassi and Safin are fun to watch against players with contrasting styles but Agassi v Ferrero would just be endless baseline rallies

HOping and Praying for- Agassi vs Federer
Would Enjoy thouroughly- Safin vs Federer
Not Completely Terrible- Agassi vs fererro

Ferrero-Agassi matches never display a great variety of tennis, it's true, but they're always terrific battles - that Masters Cup match (Shanghai, not Houston) had me on the edge of my seat right the way through. Of the four choices that would still be my least preferred, but anyway you look at it I think we're in for a great final.

Marat has it way harder right now, coming off an injury-plagued season, having played so many tight and long matches. He's erratic and it really depends on what type of form he's in tonight against Agassi. Like in Andy's match, in the first set - Marat was bascially asleep. And it wasn't until he had let himself lose the first than he realised: oh hey, I'm actually in the quarter finals and if I play my game and try and concentrate maybe I have a chance at winning this.

So, we'll see. But I'd love to see this guy in the finals. It would be wonderful.

Don't even say that. Did you see his play vs Agassi at all??? He was doing everything great, so many winners with minimal errors, and the number of aces (against Agassi...) with no df. Most importantly, it's not just his play, but also his fitness (the way he moves around) and mental determination. He did lose a bit in the 4th set but very quickly compose himself and came right back to the match. It really was an amazing performance from him today.

If Roger did get past Ferrero tommorw, he has much to do in the final.

I'm all for a Safin - Ferrero final! Federer would be nice, but not to win it... oh well, in fact just to more matches with exciting tennis and battling, that's my true wish now my fave has done the unthinkable!

didn't get to watch the match. but a little worried hearing what you said. now put Marat aside and focus on tomorrow's match first. Roger is still a step away from standing in front of Marat.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Ferrero is a big one, but Safin is one of Roger's favourite player. Seems he can read his game real easy, and has that ability to do extremely well against big servers, which never stops to amaze me.

lsy
01-29-2004, 01:44 PM
Indeed. That's no reason to go past Ferrero at this moment. Federer got to pass tomorrow test before we can talk about the final. Go Roger!

It's fair to say that Ferrero has had an easy draw, and not played a single seed- but he can play hardcourt- he made it to TMC final in particular

01-29-2004, 02:51 PM
I'm hoping Ferrero beats Federer because Safin has a better chance to beat Ferrero than Federer and his great serve. But Marat will be the underdog to either player neither of whom has spent nearly as much time on court as Safin has. I hope the extra day off helps Marat recover for the final.

In a certain way Safin vs. Federer might be a perfect final. Although today we got a perfect final too.

I'm hoping Ferrero will win against Federer, simply because I'm biased and think Marat's chances will be better against the former. Either matchups, however, will be thrilling.

He also made the finals at another small tournament somewhere... I think they call it the US Open? Yeah, he can play on hardcourts.

Roger is sooooo impressive, he's got the exact balance between concentration and looseness in his strikes. Excellent serves and his conficence is skyscraping high. Oh Marat, do you have a labour in front of you!

I believe both will have their hands full , but Roger newly found

Hm. But Safin has controlled his temperament in these matches (well, in the later stages with the presence of his Mother in the player's box!)...but the main thing is that I think Marat will be tired.

I'm not worried at all for Roger, he can read his game real easy
and LOVES playing him (according to interviews)

lsy
01-30-2004, 10:47 AM
I think he loves playing him coz he thinks they match up well and he likes Safin as a player. I don't know how the match will turn up, coz Safin had been on fire and Rogi seems to be in great form too. I just don't think it's gonna be an easy win for either of them. I hope it'll be a great match.

Wow, our Rogi sounds really confident these days. Where was the interview?

allusion
01-30-2004, 11:21 AM
Roger has acquired a level of confidence because people constantly and continually call him the most "talented player" at the moment, the guy with "all the shots" and so on. Not saying that he's not talented, but yeah. Anyone's got to have some type of confidence when you're being labelled those sort of names and you're delivering.

mrpenguin
01-30-2004, 11:36 AM
Actually, he's beaten a lot of tough of baseliners in a row (ok ferrero
was a little injured today).

The only thing I dislike in his entourage is his girlfriend pretending
to be a manager. I guess that means that ex C- tennis players
are Okay managers ;-)

Dirk
01-30-2004, 11:54 AM
His mom is his manager, she just does PR stuff. Roger felt sorry for her and gave her a job. That's all it is. GO NINJA IN THE FINAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Roger has the edge, in any case, this is one heck of a final, the best in years.
Compare this match-up to Agassi-Schuettler or Johansson-Safin (OK, with a surprise winner).
I went home for my lunchbreak, saw a couple of games of Fer vs. Fed. Roger looks SO composed on the court, it's amazing.

And to think that one year ago, he completely blew his fourth round match against Nalbandian, self-destruction personified. Now he's behaving like King Roger!

Saw something on Eurosport about an exhibition in Geneva, Roger playing Noah. This time he was having a big grin on his face, so endearing.

A finally mature Federer is a blessing for the ATP, now that Pete left and André will leave soon as well.

Finally a slam final with two talented players... can't wait but will be super nervous watching LIVE...

I want both to win, as usual... too bad for Juanqui being so hurt but he surpassed last yr AND he's #2!!! A little consolation for him... get better soon, Juanqui!

Back to the dream final: difficult to predict the outcome... Marat playing out of his mind, w all his talent AND his mental is on track now... watch out, Rogi!

But Rogi also overcoming his 2 nemeses, has to count for sth...

S be a barnburner of a match if both playing their top tennis... Marat was amazing vs. AA... WOW! If only I were there...

They both respect each other and have played several times... I just remember that great TMS Hamburg final...

I love them both...

If Rogi wins, I'll be ecstatic for his 2nd slam win. If Marat wins, I'll be so happy for him cos he will not have blown his 2nd chance!!

Either way, it's a win-win situation... for me anyway! ;)

It doesn't really matter about previous records in my opinion because obviously when you're that young and progressing, a lot of things can change in a short period of time.
