I think Safin is at a disadvantage. He's more tired and been out of the game too long. If he had been at his peak he would have Roddick for sure.
Surprise me Saf!

Sorry, as much as I would love to see Marat win(and believe me, I love that man!!!!!!!!), I think that realistically Andy has got to be the favorite. I'm just proud of Marat for reaching the quarterfinals of his first grand slam back, and no doubt will be rooting for him big time against that annoying little brat, but my head tells me that Andy is going to win, only because of confidence and the serve. However, Marat CAN win, but as of now, I say Roddick in 4.

Hope would make me vote for Marat (please win!), but I have to be realistic and vote for Andy, since he has beaten some average to good players without absolutely any problems. Marat has struggled more, and, although his comeback is great, he'll need to do much better to beat Andy.

Fedex
01-25-2004, 07:14 AM
Well, no offence, but in my mind Shalken is only an average player. Marat will still give Andy problems with his big serve and All Court game!

Dirk

Safin is not a good volleyer and oh Marat no more diving unless its on grass. That is how hurt yourself to begin with. Safin could stay at the baseline and handle Andy.

Id like to see a frustrated Roddick end up having to do this with Safin LOL :

[Robby Ginepri of the U.S. looks to play an unorthodox shot in frustration during his fourth round loss to France's Sebastien Grosjean at the Australian Open in Melbourne, Australia, Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004. Grosjean won in four sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. ]

I'd say that Marat at his peak would beat Andy at his peak, but Marat's had such a long break and I haven't seen him play.

Tennisfool, I don't understand why you  at Marat's "road to glory". He beat a lot of good players on the way to that title.

Tennis Fool

Off the top of my head, I know that he has several wins over Schuettler, and one over Roddick himself.

I think that Roddick will win. Safin is by far the superior talent, but he's been out far too long for me to believe that he's going to pull this off. Roddick is riding on confidence and matchplay that Safin simply doesn't have.

Regardless, Roddick fans across the globe will celebrate this as if it's much more than it really is.

I'm going for Marat just because i would like to see him keep this "comeback" run going. I'm not a big fan of Marat but I can tolerate watching him better than I can Roddick. I only hope that Marat uses the temper tantrums that he'll surely have in this match in a positive way and not let the tantrums bring him down.

I can't deny that Andy has rolled through his draw in superb fashion up to this point. But, there is NO way I'm betting against Marat in his come back tourny. I'm not hoping he'll do it, I expect him to tighten up his game, tighten up his mind, and kick butt! Go Marat!

Maybe because I didn't expect him to be in the last 8 in the 1st way!

Marat said he's not tired! And with every win his confidence grows!
And I think he believes he can beat Andy, that's very important! :)

Safin, lunging for the ball at break point. The racquet flew out of his hands, but the ball went over the net and hit the baseline. Safin then served for the set against Blake

eh, no worries... :p

Rat will have to play his best game. He can't loose focus like he did against Todd Martin. Honestly I don't think the Ginepri match should have gone 4 sets for him. You need to be beating people down to get the kind of momentum you need to beat someone like Andy, Agassi, Fed or any of the Top players. Marat hasn't been playing his best tennis...if he can start to play like I know he can he could defly beat Roddick. I just will be suprised if he did because I don't think he is ready

I think Roddick's wins are overvalued. He beat few single-handers. Single-handers never really did well at AO. Also, Roddick has not faced a Safin-like serve+baseline power combination in Grand Slams since Wimbledon semifinals, he might not like it.

Marat's lack of match toughness should not be overvalued too. It's his 8th match of the season, and he won 6 out of 7. So, he is not exactly playing his first point after long layoff.

On top of that, it is still not US hardcourts, so it is not exactly best Roddick's surface. After all, it is Safin, who won his last 12 out of 13 matches at AO. On paper Roddick is favourite, at least 60:40, but I think we'll be surprised.

Ok, first of all Safin's game is no where near Fed's game and this isn't grass so think again! Second, loose his temper or not Rat needs to play his best just to stand a chance. C'mon dude he struggled with Todd Martin and James Blake tested him. So he could win but, definitely no blow outs here, except maybe A-Rod blowing out Rat.

Marat is going to kill Pandy for 3 reasons.

1) he is match tough and has been through many tests and Pandy has not been tested at all.. he won't be ready for Marat's power and all around superior game.

2) Marat will take away Pandy's main weapon: His serve. Marat is one of the best returners in the game, right up there w/Agassi. His return of serve is underrated!

3) Marat will take away Pandy's only other weapon, his forehand. Just like he took away Blake's.

I expect Marat to win in 3-4 sets. If Pandy takes a set, it would be in a tiebreak.

:worship: Go Marat! :worship:

Sometimes the duller, more pedestrian approach is equally effective.

Vahaly, Martin, Blake i mean come on  there's no doubt Safin has some huge talent and can hit some awesome winners, but he's still very spotty, while Roddick isn't hitting above 15 errors per match. He's hitting serves like that becuase he wants to fuck youre timing up!!! Kinda like Federer. Fed can throw some really fast 1st and 2nd serves, and then some really slow ones, so you dont know whats coming. Actually Blake and Martin are much higher caliber opponents then Sjeng!!! Obvously Dent could have been very tough and even beat andy, but you know that Dent wasnt there at all. Marat will still beat up on Andy. I would hardly call Todd Martin a "low caliber" opponent. He used to be ranked in the top 5, for pete's sake. He is always a threat, regardless of surface, so to underrate Marat's ability to pull that match out is totally short-sighted.

Even though I like Andy Roddick, I will be rooting for Marat Safin who is my favorite men's tennis player since Stefan Edberg. :) But Safin was tired at the end of his fourth round match against James Blake and that's not a good sign. But if Safin can somehow win 1 of the first 2 sets Roddick who hasn't been in a close match since November of 2003 might falter from not being match tough. That's Marat's only hope. I think Roddick will win in 4 sets.

In my mind Safin has had a fine comeback to tennis at the 2004 Australian Open. :) But I would like his chances much better if he was in the other half of the draw.

That one (plus some) set of Marat/James I just saw was the happiest viewing experience I've had since the AO coverage started. :) James was playing VERY well. I hope he can continue to improve his ranking throughout the year. But, MARAT! :woohoo: I got a chance to see the shot making, the movement, the aces!! YES! well Andy's a lot match-tougher, he's played a lot less tennis in the past week, and he's looked REALLY solid (both mentally and tennis-wise) in all his matches. Those are three reasons to think Andy might win
And you like him more As we know, people ONLY vote for who they like in this poll. Nobody around here can actually use their fucking brains when voting.

Especially me.

I will root for Safin. Not because I'm a Safinslut, but because I want to see an upset....
No, this makes you a Safinslut. Only people who vote for Roddick know how to think. Haven't you been reading the thread? ;)

Some fans might, but that's always the case with any player and his/her fans. I'm very confident in myself that I will not react as you suggest if Andy beats Safin.
There is a reason that I didn't say "ALL Andy fans around the globe".

;) bunkie-boo

BTW, ESPN showed the last two sets of the Safin/Blake match. Good stuff! Saw that *illegal* shot Marat made that everyone was blowing their load over (lobbing a ball by throwing his racket).

Marat better not try any funny shit like that in his match against Roddick.

 ESPN only showed the match from 1-1 in the 4th set. They should have shown more of that, instead of re-playing Agassi/Srichaphan.

And the shot was not illegal. Marat had control of the racquet when the ball hit his strings and bounced off. Only after that did his racquet come out of his hands.

ah people talking out of sheer hope. apply the same shit to Safin as you did to Roddick. I'm sorry but Roddick's opponents were of a much higher calibur than Safin's opponents. Vahaly, Martin, Blake i mean come on  there's no doubt Safin has some huge talent and can hit some awesome winners, but he's still very spotty, while Roddick isn't hitting above 15 errors per match. Safin's errors are way up there. and he's hitting his 2nd serves like the WTA girls hit their 1st serves, and im not kidding. anyways lets just stop the talking and wait until this match is over

I can't speak for Vahaly, but Martin, Blake, and Nieminen were playing at an incredibly higher level than any of Roddick's opponents. And Marat's serve has not been a problem; he's hit more aces than Roddick.

I highly doubt Vahaly was playing at a high level, unfortunately for him lol.

As for serving and aces, I don't think that tells anything. Against Dent especially and Schalken, Andy served a lot into the body, and while just as hard to return successfully, the guys manage to get their rackets on body serves usually so it's not an ace, even though it's an unreturned serve. Andy's percentage has been high and he's winning around 90% of his first serve points, I think his serve is doing A-OK too lol (not that you said it wasn't.. but yeah lol).

In any case... I'm just not gonna be anywhere near this board tomorrow night/Tuesday morning lol. Everyone's scaring me at this point. It's only a tennis match lol but you'd think it's gonna be the outbreak of WWIII :bolt:

Marat fans are passionate enough to fight for Marat and the Andy fans that are here are passionate enough to fight for Andy. But it almost doesn't matter who wins. I can see the arguments now.

If Marat wins it's "yayyyyyyyyyyyyy I told you sooooooo Pandy Sucks"

if Andy wins it's "yayyyyyyyyyyyy I told you so Andy Rocks" and ALSO "Marat wasn't at his best and Andy got lucky." I'm sure a few bum line calls in Andy's favor would also be responsible.

Houston is always on the list because per capita there are more fast-food restaurants, and for some reason that's one of the huge indicators in the study. Houston's not a walking city - in part b/c of the heat during msot of the year and in part because it's just SO spread out that you just drive everywhere. that might have something to do with it.

But, I've never noticed that people are by far more overweight here than in Boston or any other big city I've been to. but whatever

I wouldn't worry about it bunk, Channel 4 seem to have a major anti-American complex going on in their programming - or perhaps anti-Bush would be more appropriate. That programme was preceded by a documentary called The State of Texas (nice double meaning there), which basically had a go at Texas under Bush's governorship and since then.

Yeah, the humidity sucks. But I love the snow, 'specially when it sticks to everthing. It becomes a winter wonderland. Plus shovelling snow is actually good exercise for me; forces me to get off my lazy ass and work.

And yeah, the foliage in autumn is spectacular. Even more so further up north than New York, in New New Hampshire/Vermont/Maine. The only problem is that far up north it's always overcast and muggy in the mornings, whether it actually rains or not.

Well, I'm talking upstate, upstate, like around the Adirondacks, which is basically the same latitude as Vermont and New Hampshire.

And I like the snow, too, especially if I don't have to drive!

arrrrrrrrhhhhggg Snow.

I shudder when I have to go up north over the pass.

Ah, okay MisterQ. I've never been that far up north in New York state, although I do make regular trips to New Hampshire, especially since my sis attends college there (although right now she's in New Zealand, the lucky bitch ;)).

Would love to go to NZ someday.

The upper half of New York is a lot like Vermont or New Hampshire, but with more lakes.

Houston is always on the list because per capita there are more fast-food restaurants, and for some reason that's one of the huge indicators in the study. Houston's not a walking city - in part b/c of the heat during msot of the year and in part because it's just SO spread out that you just drive everywhere. that might have something to do with it.

Houston was last year's dubious winner of the Fat City, USA contest. ;) I read that the mayor actually hired a fitness czar to help implement a weight-loss program for Houston citizens and now ... ta daaaa! ... Houston is no longer the fattest city in the country! Guess who won this year's Fat City, USA contest?

Anybody from Detroit post here? ;)

I can get around at home ok, but Houston's just so flat and gridded that I get lost!! I can only understand directions, such as "Get on the highway and go left" - if you said "take 610 east" that's like a foreign language to me here. But at home I'm fine, I don't know what it is!

It's the big new football dome where the Super Bowl is taking place next week.... it's out Kirby, where Astroworld is and the old Astrodome was. the Light Rail goes from there all the way down Main/Fannin into downtown. like in a straight line.

bunk, I found the voting peculiar, too. Safin is my favorite men's tennis player and I want him to win this match. But Safin is the clear underdog in this match and anyone who doesn't realize that isn't being fair. People voted for Safin because they like him more than they do Roddick. Well I like them both. Although I prefer Marat. Looking at this exciting matchup logically, Andy's playing much better tennis than Marat is and Marat missed most of last year and isn't in top form. If Safin had been playing well for a couple of months I would pick him in this match. But Roddick is the clear favorite. Marat's chance is to keep the match close and put some doubt in Roddick's mind. That way Safin could win a close match.

well, the cat, it doesn't seem like much logic goes into who votes for whom on a poll (and well, it's a silly message board poll so logic isn't really required lol)... it's just interesting b/c it's indicative of the atmosphere of MTF in general. Andy is my favorite player, but I know Marat has a good chance of winning. Since I am unsure of what the result will be, I did not vote. Maybe all the people who voted really are just uber-confident in their favorite player. If so that's great for them... that's just not how my brain works lol I always get nervous and I displace my nervous energy on other people than myself (I'm way more likely to get nervous about a tennis match than anything going on in my own life).

And though I'm nervous, I will be ok with whatever happens because I know that if Andy loses it wasn't for lack of preparation or hard work or trying. He (almost) always goes down fighting hard til the end, and that's one of the reasons I like him so I won't be disappointed. and if Andy wins I would hope that Marat's fans won't be disappointed either as he's made a fabulous comeback already and is showing everyone that he's back and still a force to be reckoned with.

I'm glad it's a night match so it's overnight for me so I can't be here. I don't like this "war" that appears to be ready to break out. I don't think it can end well no matter who wins.

cat, bunk, well said

I'm thinking that it will be a close match.
If Marat plays as well as he has been doing, he could win the match.
His tennis is better than Roddick.

Ultimately, if he loses, it doesn’t mean that he stinks, or anything, or that Roddick is better.

Like you guys have been saying, Marat is coming back from an injury and a few months off. His performance already is amazing.

If he does win, it’ll probably be in 5, and it should be an interesting match. Maybe the match of the Quarterfinals.

qliz2000, you contradicted yourself there. i agree whatever happens happens, and the better player will win. but you said that if Marat plays well he can beat Roddick. therefore he played better tennis. but then you go and say if Roddick wins, its not because he's better:confused:

Deboogle!.
01-26-2004, 09:13 PM
My point was not that whoever wins is better, but whoever wins will have PLAYED BETTER IN THIS ONE MATCH. I'm not a fan of the "So and so is more talented" bull.

My point is that it doesn't need to turn into a fight, but if you read much around this board, you'd know it's almost inevitable, and that just makes me sad.

If I thought that if Andy loses I could come to this board and see people say "yay Marat but nice effort Andy" then I wouldn't be saying this. but by and large, that's not going to happen, so I'll just stay away and avoid the situation :)

Oh and I just want to add that I'm not putting a double standard on those who are Marat fans/Andy haters. Plenty of Andy fans are baiting the Marat fans too.. and I just personally do not want to be involved :)

bunk, logic has to enter into this at some point. I want Safin to win. But I think Roddick will win because he's in great form while Safin is just coming back from a long injury. Advantage Roddick. It was a rather simple deduction on my part.

I suppose I'm one of the few fans whose 2 favorite men's tennis players are Marat Safin and Andy Roddick.

Well the tautological answer would be that only those who are capable of using logic can use it ;)

As for your being a fan of both, I think it's great. I don't have any problems with Marat and in fact from what I've seen I like... I just have not seen enough to make up my mind about him yet. :)

I think Roddick has to start favourite just because Safin is still on the comeback trail while Roddick is on a high ... but I would never, ever underestimate Safin's raw ability. I would say there's a 33% chance of an upset.
