OK - I know I'm a little early - but I'm so bored with all this green, slippery, grass stuff

So - I'm glad to say that in 5 days time, David will be back on the clay - playing first in the beautiful Swedish seaside town of Båstad, then in Stuttgart (one of my favourite tournaments of the year), and finally Umag on the gorgeous Adriatic coast in Croatia.

I will be there to cheer him on in Stuttgart (along with Eléa), and I may possibly be going to Umag too - though that is not definate yet.

So GOOD LUCK David :)

If I'm correct Fer and David will open the Copa del Rey in Huelva :)

Looks like Ferrer and Coria play the final. Well done!

Have just checked their HTH and Soderling is 2-0 over David. But that was back in 2004 and on hard and grass. David has improved on both those surfaces since, grass just very recently. :D I think my hero will win this one. :yeah:

The Toad Soderling can be very dangerous when he gets "on a roll". I saw him demolish Nalbandian in straight sets in Hamburg a couple of years ago. With the crowed behind him - it won't be easy.As long as David is just having a bad day, and not sick or injured, I can cope with it. He had a great Wimbledon - this is his first tournament after it on a different surface - it takes a while to adjust.

I had a look at the scoring thread. Most of the people there are idiot gamblers who get annoyed because players are losing them money  but I can't see any evidence of illness or inury. Most of them are actually saying he "tanked" because he had no points to defend this week -but has more in Stuttgart and Umag. I don't think he would ever do that. Seems he served an enormous number of double faults but there were no injury time-outs or calls to the trainer.

Seems Soderling just played well - and after a close first set David beame "disgruntled and careless" - hope there wasn't a clock nearby or it may have suffered.

Small report on "Strange World" thread - I am too tired to differentiiate between threads tonight!! As for Gastón - I think it was just one of those days. I wasn´t there, but Elea and Choupi and Reiko were - sounds like he played OK in the first set and then had some bad calls/bad luck/got stressed/lost concentration/got endless foot faults etc and that was the reason for the loss. That´s what I´ve heard anyway

Sounds like a typical David loss than. What worries me is that both were on clay.

True. Although I'm not sure Rosie will still be there as she said she might go home today. But maybe she will stay now that David has gotten to the 1/4 finales, coaches are bringing her icecream and Javi is fighter a cow for her attention.

Hola chicas :wavey: Sadly I am on my way home today - so just checking in from the Internet cafe at Brussels Midi Eurostar terminal, where I seem to have an interminable wait  It was a shame to leave before David - but I have stuff to do at home and may be off again to Umag early next week; Sadly it is not my baby against David - he lost badly against Mayer last night - he was tired bless him. But I saw Javi at breakfast this morning (yes - Players Lounge and Players Hotel - between us, Elea and I know how to live!) and wished him well - so he better win now. Btw Elea if you are reading this ..............how did you manage to sit there for the whole of the doubles' last night with the Dirty Man right behind you  You were very brave! Anyway - chat to you all soon - maybe tonorrow - I will be tired by the time I get home. Adios

Tommy B. has a 2-1 H2H over David. But from what I can see from the stats they were all very close matches. Also Berdych has been having backproblems this tourney and David is on a roll.

That doesn't sound fair, since Tommy B. is already suffering a backinjury. But hey, live is not fair, so will you or will I PM Elea? :p

Don't know if the winner of this match will win the tournament. I give Acasuso a very good chance although this really should be David's tournament, because he's got the most tennis-groupies.:)

The interview was on the main ATP site

Ferrer: "I had a good start in both sets, but Mayer gave me a hard time at the end of both sets. I'm very happy I reached my second semifinal of the year, I want to make good results on my favorite surface clay."

About playing Berdych in the semifinals: "It will be a difficult match. Berdych has been playing very well here. I will have to run a lot against him."

Don't worry alisia - there will NEVER be such a dilemma! Let us say my only interest in Mónaco was my friendship with his former coach - and now they're not working together anymore - I don't need to show loyalty. In fact - Mónaco has quite annoyed me with some things he has said and done recently  - so Javi will always win!

Ferrer beats Berdych in Stuttgart final
Sat 22 Jul, 3:21 PM

BERLIN (Reuters) - Spain's David Ferrer beat Tomas Berdych 6-3 7-5 in their semi-final at the Mercedes Cup claycourt event in Stuttgart on Saturday.

Third seed Ferrer sealed victory when his 20-year-old Czech opponent served a double fault on match point.

"Naturally I am very happy and we will see how it goes from here. It was a hard game," said Ferrer.

Argentines Juan Monaco and Jose Acasuso will play in the second semi-final later on Saturday.

I think you can wear anything you want but seeing has they are probably the straightest gay couple you will find I think it will be black suits. As for the sister of the groom I've bought a black two-piece suit thou I might be wearing trainers my sister has bought a hat & my nephews like their uncle cannot see why they have to wear a suit but then again neither can my dad. That makes for a difficult match for David. But his parents are there and so is the lovely Elea, so I think he will win this one.

Slingbacks sound very sophisticated under a black two piece. But if it's a paints suit you could also go for a very cool sneaker like thing to break it up a little. I sometimes wear my pink Allstars under my suit. Granted it's not very "weddingy", but it makes it look a little less serious. ;)

Just watched David's match against Berdych. What can I say ..... he was on fire :fiery:. He did get some help from TB in the first 4 games, where Tommy hit so many UE. But David really played a very strong consistent match. Although I still can't figure out why he at 5-2 in the second decided to play it safe and moved 3 meters behind the baseline. So then he had to play 5 more games instead of just the one. But at 5-5 after some Ferrerstyle shouldershrugging he woke up again and finished it of. Well played David.

Not to many close-ups of the coach, but enough to see he needs a haircut. Did see lots of the padres. Mom was all cheers and bounces at the end while dad was like, take it easy. ;)

Interview from yesterday's match

22th July 2006

David Ferrer in MercedesCup Final

In the first semi-final of the 28thMercedesCup, David Ferrer was once more able to profit from his amazing speed – again and again, David Ferrer chased one ball after the other coming from his opponent Tomas Berdych and put the No. 2 seed in his place with precise and powerful strokes. From the very first game on, the 24-year-old Spaniard won the serve from his four years’ younger opponent and went on to lead by 5:3. At 15:40 from Berdych’ point of view who was serving, Ferrer had would have had two set balls, but managed to win the first one for a score of 6:3. The second set followed a similar pattern, as Ferrer also led 2:0 and later led 5:3, before the No.15 in the world rankings tried to get back into the game by taking the Spaniard’s serve. When the score was then 6:5 for Ferrer, who is three places lower in the ATP rankings, Berdych played a double fault at a score of 30:30 which then presented his opponent with his first matchball. Berdych was able to defend it and also the one following, but with the next double fault, the Czech finally lost the match 5:7. “It was a very difficult match, especially towards the end,” summed up Ferrer after the match and he is now looking forward to the final on Sunday. “That is very important for me. It is a good tournament and on top of that there is the car as well. I feel very strong and am fit at the moment.” His possible opponents in the final, José Acasuso or Juan Monaco, both play a similar style to himself, mainly from the back of the court. “I don’t think that it matters who I will play against – it will be fitness and the quality of play from the base which decide the winner.”

Ferrer Saves 1 M.P. for Second Career Title

Third-seeded David Ferrer saved one match point before producing a remarkable comeback against No. 5 seed Jose Acasuso for his second career ATP singles title at the Mercedes Cup on Sunday.

Ferrer won a marathon Stuttgart final that lasted five hours, coming back from two sets to one and a 5-1 fourth set deficit against No. 5 seed Jose Acasuso for a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-4 victory.

Acasuso held one match point at 5-4 in the fourth set, with Ferrer serving advantage point down.

Ferrer became the fifth Spanish winner of the Mercedes Cup in ATP history, adding to title-winning campaigns for Jose Higueras (1983), Alberto Berasategui (1994), Alex Corretja (1997) and Rafael Nadal last year.

In snapping a four-match losing streak against Acasuso, Ferrer collected 100,000 euros in prize money, a new Mercedes-Benz CLK 200 Kompressor convertible car and 250 INDESIT ATP Rankings points.

The 24-year-old beat Acasuso for his maiden career ATP title in Bucharest four years ago.

This season’s Vina del Mar champion, Acasuso, appearing in his eighth ATP final, received 53,000 euros and 175 INDESIT ATP Rankings points.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Ferrer: “I’m very happy. It’s the biggest tournament for me. I didn’t think it was possible to win at 5-1 in the fourth set. I continued fighting. I played point-to-point. At 5-3, it was just one break. So I was thinking: ‘I can do it, I can do it.’ It’s the best day of my life.”

Acasuso: “I played very well in the second, third and fourth set until 5-1. Then he played good on my serve. After I lost the fourth set, I felt so vulnerable, because I was cramping in both legs. But he played well. I had a chance in the fifth. But at 5-4, he played well, served well. He had two aces that game

So great that he has another title under his belt and I hope this gives him the confidence to go on and win even more in the future.

States feeling "worn out" after winning the final of Stuttgart

David Ferrer gives up disputing the Croatia Open
David Ferrer will not dispute the Croatia Open, where he was the number one seed, on account of being "exhausted" after winning last weekend Stuttgart's Mercedes Cup, in a final with the Argentine José Acasuso that was long-winded as far as five hours. Ferrer's replacement will be the Italian Stefano Galvani.

It is the second consecutive year in which the Croatia Open lost its No 1 seed, already that last year it was Rafael Nadal who also renounced participating in the tournament after proclaiming himself winner in Stuttgart's tournament.

From the main ATP site

Ferrer, Soderling, Monaco Reach Second Round

Second-seeded David Ferrer recorded his third straight win over fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-2, 6-1 in just 59 minutes for a place in the Catella Swedish Open second round on Tuesday.

Ferrer, who is playing at the tournament for the third time in his career, broke five times from nine opportunities. Garcia-Lopez won just six points on return of serve and 28 points in total.

The 25-year-old Ferrer, who will next meet Nicolas Massu of Chile, captured his third career ATP title in Auckland (d. Robredo) in January and has a 33-13 season record.

Garcia-Lopez has now made seven first round exits at tournaments this year. The World No. 67 has a 13-15 mark in 2007.

Three Spaniards Advance to Semifinals

Second-seeded David Ferrer improved to 35-13 this year with a second career win over Gilles Simon of France 6-1, 6-0 in 71 minutes for a place in the semifinals of the Allianz Suisse Open on Friday.

World No. 15 Ferrer, who beat Simon in the ATP Masters Series Monte-Carlo first round in April, converted six of 14 break point opportunities.

Simon won just 36 of 100 points in his second semifinal of the season. He falls to 19-18 in 2007. The 22-year-old captured his maiden ATP title in Marseille (d. Baghdatis) in February.

Ferrer will meet fifth-seeded Italian Filippo Volandri, who cruised past Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-1, 6-2 for a place in his first semifinal since ATP Masters Series Rome in May. Volandri has a 16-13 season record.
