Gordo blew a 6-0 4-0 lead and 5 mps before losing to Koubek 0-6 7-6 7-5.

I like both guys, but this was not one of the better mental performances from Calleri in this event.

Gordo plays Seppi in the 1st round of the US Open and the winner will more than likely play Hewitt therefore I wil have a player I like in the next round.

Glad I was proven wrong about Gordo losing easily.

This was even better than his performance against Agassi in Miami. He lost the 1st set as expected against Hewitt, but he calmed down and just moved the ball around very well and then just belted so many clean winners and it was great to witness.

Classy Calleri ends Hewitt hopes


Former US Open champion Lleyton Hewitt made his earliest ever exit from the tournament after losing 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-2 to Agustin Calleri in round two.

The Argentine world number 58 hit 65 winners on his way to his first career victory over the Australian, who was champion here in 2001.

"Early in the second set, I didn't quite stamp my authority on the match after I'd won the first," said Hewitt.

"I could have put more pressure on. He started to play better from then on."

Calleri had 17 unforced errors in the first set but made just 20 in the rest of the match, and Hewitt admitted the better player won.

"If I hit the ball anywhere half in the middle of the court, dropped it short, he was all over it," said Hewitt, the 2001 Open titlist.

"He didn't miss a lot. And I didn't quite get enough on the ball."

Calleri was understandably delighted with his display.

"I'm feeling very happy because I played the whole match very well. I was very focused," he said.

FREE-swinging Argentine Agustin Calleri smacked winners from all parts of the court to send Lleyton Hewitt crashing out of the US Open today.

Australia's 2001 champion went down 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-2 in two hours and 42 minutes to make his earliest exit from the New York grand slam event.

Calleri, the world No.58 who had won just three matches in six previous visits to Flushing Meadows, played the match of his life, striking an amazing 65 clean winners to leave Hewitt shell-shocked.

Hewitt, 26, had reached the quarter-finals or better at the Open for the past seven years, a feat only ever matched by all-time greats Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl.

But apart from the first set, he was unable to combat the cavalier tactics of Calleri, who was determined to attack at every opportunity.

"If I hit the ball anywhere half in the middle of the court, dropped it short, he was all over it,'' Hewitt said.

"I didn't quite play as well as I would have liked early in that second set. That gave him an opportunity to get back in the match.

"Early in the second set, I didn't quite stamp my authority on the match after I won the first set.

"I could have put a little bit more pressure on him early in the second. Then he started to play better tennis from then on.

"He was hitting winners from everywhere in the end.''

There was no sign of what was to come when Hewitt made a lightning start to the match, breaking Calleri's first service game to grab a 2-0 lead, and looked to be in total control of the set at 5-2 up.

While untroubled on his own serve, Calleri had to fend off further break points in his second and third service games just to stay in touch.

Out of the blue, though, Hewitt coughed up a double-fault, missed a backhand and then Calleri unleashed a stinging backhand return winner to break back to bring the set back on level terms.

In total, Hewitt was able to convert just one of nine break-point chances and squandered four set points before Calleri netted a forehand return to finally submit after 52 minutes.

Hewitt made a terrible start to the second set, dropping his first service game to love and losing 11 straight points to fall behind 3-1.

He showed signature grit to save another break point to avoid going down 4-1 before levelling at 3-3 when Calleri dumped another forehand into the net on break point.

But the Argentine continued hitting out come what may, and his brazen play reaped rewards when he broke Hewitt again with a sizzling forehand winner to surge ahead 5-4.

Calleri clinched the set in 38 minutes when Hewitt sent a forehand long.

All up, Calleri had mixed 31 clean winners with 27 unforced errors to have the match all tied up.

The pattern continued in the third set with the free-swinging South American blazing his away to an early break and then peeling off five straight winners from love-40 down to hold for 2-0.

And although Hewitt was able to stave off three further break points in the third game, he was unable to make any inroads on Calleri's serve and found himself down two sets to one after two hours and 11 minutes.

Hewitt has made a career out of fighting his way out of holes, but not this time as Calleri continued the assault in the fourth set.

He broke Hewitt twice more and, fittingly, nailed his 20th backhand winner down the line on match point to complete his stunning upset.

Gordo has qualified for Madrid.

He defeated Cipolla 6-3 6-0 and then took out Bolelli 6-1 7-6 (2)

Calleri had a good win against Tursunov 3-6 7-6 6-4. The 1st set and a half it wasn't much of a performance, then he started to improve his depth on the groundstrokes and then played well in the TB hitting some good winners.

Then the 3rd set was impressive and now he plays his mate Canas in the next round.

Gordo lost against Willy today and however Willy's win made me happy, there were mixed feelings because I don't like Agustin losing :sad:

Calleri is playing Ferrer in Basel and he has struggled against him in the past.

Gordo Calleri def Ferrer 6-4 7-6 and saved heaps of set points in the 2nd set, now he will play either Baghdatis or Montanes in the next round.

Last game before the TB was a real thriller :eek:

Calleri has been confirmed as a participant in the Copa Argentina de tenis 2007 which is quite a good exho between 12 players and is played on hardcourts at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club on the 13 to December 16.

Others confirmed are Nalbandian, Canas, Chela, Moya and Monaco. More than likely Acasuso, Horna, del Potro will be added to the list over time.

"The structure of national tennis? Do you have enough tapes to record? Because I could talk about this for hours. When I was in juniors, which was played nationally by regions, in one month we would have three weekends of competitions: the Rio Cuarto regional championship, the Cordoba state championship or other provincial towns, and the national championship. Nowadays, the kids don't know how to compete. There is one person in particular who changed everything for the worse, because today, the kids have no motivation. Before, you could hardly wait for the weekend to arrive so you could play the tournaments. Juniors, cadets and children would all get on board and travel together. Today that doesn't exist, you go and watch a national tournament and there's no one there, you don't have any audience. Before, the courts would be full."

What Calleri states there is a real pity. The organization should pay attention to the junior players because that's where the future is.

Well Radek stopped Gordo's run in Sydney today :sad: 6-3 6-4

I saw Gordo training today briefly and sadly for me he has to play Lucho in the 1st round. The compensation is that one of them will make the 2nd round.

The winner of that will play Moya or Koubek and there is a good chance for a 3rd round there.

4 players I like very much meeting each other this soon... this sucks :sad:

Horna 2.50 over Calleri: These two already have played twice this year, with Horna taking the last in Chile on clay. Calleri pulled a big win over fellow Argentine Juan Monaco, but I don't think that this is his best surface and I think that he'd much rather be in Rotterdam or San Jose and has no choice but to do this because its in his home nation. At these odds I have to go with Horna, who also holds a 3-1 career edge on the dirt.

Good draw for Gordo, if he keeps foccused in the debut he should defeat Echagaray, who plays at home but seems to play poorly on clay seeing his results.

Surprise surprise he plays his doubles partner Lucho for the 4th time in 2008.

Match finished just before I had to leave for work this morning (and got me in a good mood at this time of day :bounce: )

Now Gordo-Lucho so that will be a heartbreaker again :help:
I want them both to win. Gordo because of what happened last year and Lucho because I want him to climb the rankings again...
