Santoro fined for spitting

Frenchman Fabrice Santoro has been fined $US1,500 ($A1,930) for spitting towards a linesman during his second-round loss to Mark Philippoussis last night at the Australian Open.

Santoro spat in the direction of the linesman in the fourth set of the 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-2 loss to Philippoussis after disputing a line call with chair umpire Andreas Egli.

The Frenchman then glared in the same direction before turning to receive serve.

The International Tennis Federation said today that Santoro was fined under an unsportsmanlike conduct charge.

But Australian Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald defended Santoro, saying he was one of the politest players on the circuit and the incident was completely out of character.

"I know him ... and he's one of the politest kids that are out there," Fitzgerald told Sydney radio 2UE.

"He obviously made a bit of a mistake, it was an on-the-spot wrong decision that he made.

"But he's got one of the nicest characters you could ever meet on the tennis circuit."

Fitzgerald said Santoro rivalled Pat Rafter in the nice-guy stakes.

This is too bad --- he is a nice guy, and one of my favorites.

Oh well. Maybe he had an excess of saliva.

Understandable that he made an on-the-moment mistake. He deserves to pay the fine though of course.

I still like Fabrice. :)

I've seen Santoro get pretty pissed off before.

It's not totally out of character.

But, anyway, he played a good match. I think that when he lost it, he was very tired and nervous about losing.

He could have received a code violation, but 1500 bucks?! ;) I'd sue them.

He got a warning from umpire during the match and he should pay the fine. It's very insulting to spit toward someone even not exactly on the face.

Oh well. Maybe he had an excess of saliva.

Maybe he can get a doctor to confirm that ;)

Anyway, $1500 is nothing to Santoro. Pay the bill and make sure the ATP gives it to a charity and everything is OK :) And it is good to see Santoro doing such a thing ;) Gooooo Fabrice :D

Out of character, for sure.

1500 is nothing. It should have been more. The ATP cant condone such behaviour at all, even if it is out of character. It was extremely rude and uncalled for.
I think Santoro was spitting bc he was sick anyway, apparently he was coughing a lot in his doubles match. And he didnt turn up with Llodra to support Seb on Fri night.
