Roddick will probably win easily, but that match could be fun because Uhlirach has one of the craziest returns of serve, he almost always goes for the laser return of serve winner, even when he plays someone with a weak serve.
That means his opponents most of the time held serve easily because he throws the return out of the court all the time.
If he is a little lucky he may break Andy's serve and steal a set.

Korda used to return like that (it must be a czech thing) off course Korda was a lot better doing that, and he did it with a one handed backhand.

Just a random thought: has anyone else noticed that everyone---boys and girls alike---are either wearing blue or red outfits? In particular, I'm seeing a lot more red than usual. I wonder if this is a way to win the Aussies' favor by wearing the Aussie flag colors? Hmm.

Nah, I doubt it. The Aussie national colours are green and gold anyhow, that's what the Davis Cup team all wear.

Good luck to czech nobodies, Chela, if you feel like you can beat Roddick, beat Dent.

I think Gaudio has to play today, is the play schedule complete?

Andy's 3-0 against the guy without dropping a set and has beaten him on 3 diff. surfaces (clay, grass, rebound ace). Though nothing is impossible, I would be shocked if Andy has much trouble, especially since all their matches were in 2002 and Andy's just a little bit better than he was then ;)

Yes, the Rebound Ace match was in the first round of Sydney when Roddick won the first set in 16 minutes and then went on to win 0 and 4... however, Ulihrach choked big time in Monte Carlo when he served for the first set and had setpoints in both sets but ended up losing in two breakers. The Wimbledon match was a retirement, so not much to gauge from that.

My conclusion? Yeah, Roddick will probably win easily. But it's always worth hoping. ;)

Yeah, Squillari was always 3 meters behind the baseline, he was strong enough to hit winners from there.
There are not many players who play that style nowadays.
Hernan Gumy also played like three meters behind the baseline.
His five setter against Corretja is one of my favorite matches ever.
I just dont like clay courters like Ferrero who play on clay like a hardcourt baseliner.
That is why I always cheer for Mantilla and Costa.

It took so much out of him that Ancic cleaned up the next two sets, and Schalken apparently got a really bad call that lost him the match and got him fined for an audible obscenity afterwards.

Coria's isn't bad though, he usually has a very high percentage of 75-80% and like Grosjean's serve, the low trajectory over the net makes it difficult to return (commentators have informed me...). Gaudio looks as though he wants to just scrape that thing into the box and start the rally off.

Chela's is classic. :D In 2002 it was this weird abbreviated motion that he armed into the box by swivelling his body, no leg push-up at all (as a Schalken fan I find this entertaining to watch ;) ). He changed it last year, but it's still a fairly awkward action.

Aah, a double break for Schalken... 4-1 now, that makes life easier. I've learnt not to relax fully until matches are over, however.

TennisLurker
01-20-2004, 11:19 PM
I watch Chela just to watch him serve.

I think he can beat Dent, Chela played twice five setters against Sampras in Australia I think.
His return is not very agressive, but he gets a lot of serves back.

Sjengster
01-20-2004, 11:20 PM
Melzer now up a break too - go Jurgen! I'd love to see him and Schalken duel for a place in the second week, he has... distinctive bandannas.

allusion
01-20-2004, 11:20 PM
He won his first ever match at the AO last year (in five sets), his record there is even worse than Schalken's... I reckon Grosjean's going to slaughter him, I have to say.

Go go go Grosjean!

Sjengster
01-20-2004, 11:22 PM
Well, as long as Roddick's around I have to root for Dent, although I'm not sure his serve-volley game will work too well on slow Rebound Ace... it'd be nice for Chela to recapture the great form he had early in 2002 when he knocked off Roddick in Miami, but I can't see it happening somehow.

Two sets to love! Hmm, not great stats for Ferrer - 0 aces to 7 doubles, 12 winners to 37 UE. I don't think Schalken's ever lost from a two-set lead at the AO...

Sjengster

Soderling has an amazingly straight ball toss, his left arm goes up right above him and stays rigid as he stretches up to the ball. Quite powerful, but not always accurate.
