What was the best match that you saw in person?
The best match I attended was way back in 1979 at the American Airlines Tournament in Rancho Mirage (predecessor to Pacific Life). John McEnroe faced off against Eliot Teltscher in a quarterfinal match. McEnroe had just won the Masters against Arthur Ashe and was competing for the number one ranking. McEnroe made the mistake in this match by approaching on Teltscher's one handed backhand, which was one of the best in the game at the time. Mac got passed time and time again. Teltscher eventually one 6-7 7-5 7-6. It was quite an upset.
McEnroe blamed the breezy conditions on his loss so much that he didn't appear in any of the tournaments in the Coachella Valley until 1991, when Operation Desert Storm compelled him to take a wildcard at the time in the comfort of home.
