Actually recent scientific evidence shows that dogs are indeed smarter than cats. Pack animals have had to develop a more complex skill set to survive as a pack (humans being another example).

For me it was dogs, definitely, until our last cat, Shugs. She was the most attention-craved animal I've ever seen, she would always come on command and would always want to be in someone's lap, she constantly desired affection. I rememeber she would jump in my lap constantly when I would be trying to do homework, I'd put her down 3, 4, times and she'd jump right back up, I'd go drop her off in the living room and she would run all the way back and jump in my lap again.

:haha:

this is the craziest post ever.

Dogs have great qualities a cat can not replicate. Cats have great qualities a dog cannot replicate.

Cats do not require as much work as dogs and are convenient for leaving alone for a long period of time -- so at this time in my life, cats are the better pet for me.

But, I find cats to be very loyal. I don't know why anyone would think they were not. So many cats will interact only with their own family and with no one else. I had a cat who was basically an outdoor cat stay with me constantly on my bed when I was dreadfully sick for a whole week. When I had to go to the hospital, he looked everywhere for me. I've had the cat I have now run down the driveway toward my car when she saw me coming. I had another cat who when he heard the family car went to sit by the door for his loved ones to enter.

Obviously cats can also be very loving and loyal, but I don't think they can compare to dogs, sorry. I don't know, you can interact better with dogs.
But I also agree that having a cat is more convenient and much less work. Though I cannot stand to see cats living permanently inside a house and never experiencing outdoors life. That's sad.
Dogs are a lot of work and dedication, I have three myself! And even though my life would be much easier without them (ie. moving to a new city in another country proves to be complicated with 3 dogs), I simply cannot live without them.

I apologize for bumping this post since it isn't pleasant, but I went through the exact same thing this past summer (dachshund). 5 year old though, loving, loyal, and caring. I have lost faith in that breed because of all the back problems that most of them develop, and am also having trouble opening up to another pet.

Cats do seem appealing to me though, but I just never had one as a legitimate pet, just other family members had them. Something about a cat's eyes that are so hypnotizing.

Well, I am a pragmatist. I wouldn't keep something around simply for emotional attachment. Therefore I cannot see the logic of having a cat as a pet. Yes, my dog is technically a "pet", but he guards my home in exchange for food and walks. He isn't there to just sit on my lap while I watch TV. That's why I can never imagine myself having a cat as a pet. It just seems that I get nothing substantial in return.

I have a good home security alarm system so a dog certainly wouldn't help much, and I don't need to walk it 2 hours a day...

You just don't want the responsability. Cats are the easiest option, that's why most people have them, they are convenient. They live inside an apartment all their life and you don't have to do much for them except feed them. I think it's sad to see these animals living inside a golden cage.

Dogs at least get to experience outdoors and they help you stay fit... you can walk them, run with them, take them to the beach, mountain, etc.

Obviously you don't have any sense of humour... I don't care if you have a cat or a dog or nothing... and that comment "real men love dogs" is an inside joke. I didn't count on you to get it. Don't need to overreact. ;)

Beware of generalities. Most of the housing here is individual houses; apartments are seldom higher than 2 floors, and few apartment blocks comprise more than 2-4 apartments, so cats are generally free to come and go as they please.

And yes, though we had dogs when I was a youngster, I grew away from them - much prefer cats.
