It may be not too bad. He may have not pushed it just because of the AO.

Two retirments against Hewitt. It's sort of like Cap last year at ....... what was it? Pilot Pen?

So many injuries already in the season. It's unbelievable how many matches have been decided by either withdrawal or retirement in the first two weeks of the year.

It looked pretty bad. The yahoo story said he went to the hospital afterwards and it might be a fracture. I will be surprised if he doesn't withrdraw.

There body doesn't have enough time to recuperate during their short break.

Wow. This sucks. They should definitely be giving these players more time to rest during the off-season --too many injuries!!!!

I hope the sprain isn't too serious...

Well, maybe all of these injuries on both sides of the tour will make them think about it.

If the players are playing 25+ tournaments a year anyways (as most of the men are) I'm not convinced that the short break is to blame.

They know damn well how long the offseason is and should plan their years accordingly.

Anyways... this totally sucks. Let's hope it's not a fracture.

Carlos just had a scan and the ankle will be ok, just a little tender, he'll probably fly into melbourne on sunday night or monday morning cos he needs another scan... talk about bad timing to sprain an ankle!

That is a stupid end to a good tournament for Carlos. Also a stupid win for Lleyton.
Someone should analyse these surfaces coz all these ankle fractures are not normal.

Seeing as he's playing for many years and this is his first problem on the rebound ace, examing the surface really isn't necessarly. Or perhaps we should analyse hardcourt because so many people get injured on that surface too?

Anyways... Moya plays Monday, the schedule is out. That? Sucks.

thats clever isn't it, scheduling Moya on Monday.
I bet US TV told them to do that so Blake gets a LL instead
and Potato gets another day rest, like he needs it, didnt even complete a full match combined in SF/F :o

There is no way Carlos is gonna be able to play on the Monday.
When you fall like that, i saw pics on Eurosport News, and its nasty, it takes weeks to recover.

Especially like he said he couldnt even walk properly.
When you go over, either its nothing much or its completely fucked.

I've done my ankle lots of times (twice serious), and when it goes its really bad

I really feel bad for Moya    I hope he recovers soon. He was playing so well against Hewitt, I knew he would of won. If Federer pulls a TMC, then Hewitt's Aussie Open dreams will be over this year. There seeded to meet in the 4th Rd. Youll have more chances to peel the Potato Moya. Just try and heal that ankle! Then you can get Potato some other time

Moya injures ankle

Carlos Moya is still hoping to play in next week's Australian Open despite injuring his ankle in Saturday's Sydney International final against Lleyton Hewitt. The Spaniard was rushed to hospital after rolling his right ankle in the first set, forcing him to retire and handing the title to the Australian.

Doctors initially feared Moya may have fractured his ankle but x-rays cleared him of any breaks. An ATP tennis official later said Moya had a bad sprain.

Moya, who has emerged as one of the leading candidates for the Australian Open after winning last week's Indian Open and reaching the Sydney final, collapsed in agony during the seventh game of the opening set.

He made a vain attempt to continue after strapping the ankle with protective tape but it was clear he was still in pain and he retired after just four more points.

"I wanted to try but I couldn't even walk," Moya said before being whisked to a nearby hospital for x-rays. "I just hope it's not going to be anything really bad.

"It's disappointing but these things happen in tennis."

"I was playing very well, I was very confident and the match was pretty open so it was a pity to end it this way."

Moya, Australian Open runner-up in 1997, is scheduled to play American James Blake in the first round in Melbourne on Monday.

Sad this happend to Moya. He´s had enough problems with injuries so far. But what are the AO-organizers thinking to make him play on monday???? Unbelievable!

poor carlos :( I understand that they're doing the whole top half of the draw on Monday but couldn't they make an exception for the poor man?

Poor Carlos. He was playing so well, i thought he would have won had he not fallen. He was undefeated for the year until this

It looked pretty bad, he was in quite a lot of pain, he fell to the ground and didnt get up for ages, and the trainer had to go out on court to see him. He was rushed to hospital and had a preliminary scan, and they said that came out ok, which i presume means its not fractured. Hes having an MRI scan later. He seemed to be walking ok when he got up off the ground and walked to the chair, but he was limping a lot when he received his runners up trophy.

So stupid that he has to play on Monday. The commentators said they thought he would get a Tuesday start, but obviously not
The Aussie organisers have no respect for Moya. First pushing him off Centre Court at Sydney, now this. They must hate him for beating the Potato so many times ;)

Maybe the schedule was in the works before even Carlos was injured.. maybe they can move the match??? (wishful thinking here)

I dont understand why they NEED to play the top half first, they could just play the bottom half on Monday and it wouldnt make any difference at all, except giving a greater chance of Moya not withdrawing

I dunno... my favorite player seems to be sort of injured or whatever is wrong so I'd prefer it be Tuesday as well for the top half but c'est la vie. they could still make an exception for Carlos though.

This has happened before in Grand Slams and there haven't been exceptions made. It's hard with these massive draws to work individual matches around without being unfair to someone else then. The decision to play the top half was probalby made even before Moya sprained his ankle.

The smaller tournaments have a little more flexibility.

I'm sure it was star, since that's supposedly why Andy pulled out of Kooyong - he knew he'd have to play on Monday. and they've known about kim's injury for a while now.... and also they put El-Aynaoui on for Monday also and he's been injured as well. So who knows. lol

Anyway, too bad for him :(
