I was looking at the draw, and I noticed that there are many players who got injured at the this event (not necessarily retired though), so I though I'd make a list:

Andy Roddick ret. vs. Martin with ankle injury trailing 2 sets to love - Round 1

Jarkko Nieminen ret. vs. Sluiter trailing 2 sets to love as well - Round 1

Luis Horna ret. vs. Djokovic down a set, and being served a bagel by Nole 0-5 - Round 1

Flavio Saretta ret. against Davydenko down 2-6, 1-4 - Round 2

Chris Rochus ret. vs. Ramirez-Hidalgo down 2-5 - Round 2

Nicolas Kiefer ret. vs. Berdych after getting breadsticked - Round 2

Rafael Nadal chokes on a banana vs. PHM - Round 3

Mario Ancic (thigh, stomach) AND Tommy Robredo (hamstring?) get minor injuries in the decider, and it becomes survival of the fittest - Round 4

Alberto Martin ret. vs. Benneteau with back injury - Round 4

Gael Monfils suffered back problems against Djokovic - Round 4

Mario Ancic battled shoulder pain and physical exhaustion against Federer - Quarter Finals

Novak Djokovic ret. with back injury, a stiff thigh, and a somewhat twisted ankle against Nadal - Quarter Finals

Clay is very demanding, it can become a torture to last several sets with a minor injury.

As others have said clay is the most physically demanding surface but by any standard that is alot of retirements in one tournament. Hopefully a couple weeks rest and all concerned all will be back on track.
