No Haas?

I suspect the WCs will be Dent, Fish, Delic or Jenkins, and the last reserved for a top 30 player that didn't commit - but it won't be Agassi, he hasn't played the event since he got fined heavily for swearing there.

Fish is playing WTT.

Agassi was defaulted in 1996, but played in Indianapolis the next two years--1997 & 1998--reaching the QF & F.

rca championships
Foreign players sign on for event
Hrbaty, Tursunov, Rusedski added to entry list
By Mark Ambrogi

June 22, 2006

The RCA Championships added depth, international flavor and a former champion with Wednesday's entry list announcement.

At No. 22 in the ATP Tour rankings, Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty is the highest ranked of those players not previously announced for the tournament, set for July 17-23 at the Indianapolis Tennis Center.

Russian Dmitry Tursunov, No. 31, is the next highest of the new entrees. Also entered is 2002 RCA champion and 37th-ranked Greg Rusedski, England.

RCA tournament director Kevin Martin said the field has the right blend of U.S. and international players.

However, the field suffered one setback by losing big-serving American Taylor Dent, last year's runner-up. Dent is recovering from back surgery.

Other players previously announced were two-time RCA champion Andy Roddick, defending champion Robby Ginepri, James Blake, Fernando Gonzalez, Andy Murray and Paradorn Srichaphan.

Martin has all four of his wild cards. Among his targets are Tommy Haas, Marat Safin and Marcos Baghdatis. Haas made his ATP Tour debut here in 1996, reaching the quarterfinals. Safin was a 2000 RCA runner-up and winner of two Grand Slam events. Baghdatis, ranked 17th, was the Australian Open runner-up.

Martin said he is considering some of the top junior players for wild cards, too.

"We'll also monitor Andre Agassi's situation," he said. "I don't think anyone knows how much he'll play this summer. But I know he's been . . . getting ready for Wimbledon."

Agassi committed to the RCAs the previous two years but withdrew with injuries.

"I don't think we'll bank on anything until he's in town and has been seen by a doctor," said Martin, who may hold one wild card for Agassi until just before the July 14 deadline.

http://www.rcatennis.com/TopStory.section/pages/storiesc0c998e9487.html18-year-old American Sam Querrey also accepts wild card
RCA Championships, June 29, 2006

INDIANAPOLIS… The RCA Championships filled two of their four wild card openings with a proven champion and a rising American teenager.

Two-time Grand Slam Champion Marat Safin of Russia and 18-year-old American Sam Querrey accepted wild cards to play in the 2006 RCA Championships, which will be held July 15-23, at the Indianapolis Tennis Center on the campus of IUPUI.

Prior to missing the second half of 2005 due to knee surgery, Safin captured his second career Grand Slam title in 2005 by defeating Federer in the semifinals and Aussie favorite Hewitt in the finals. Despite the season ending knee surgery Safin finished the year at No. 13 on the INDESIT ATP Rankings. He was a finalist at Halle and a quarterfinalist at AMS Cincinnati. Safin, currently ranked No. 87 on INDESIT ATP Rankings, didn’t step back on the court until February at Dubai and is starting to regain his form.

“We are delighted that Marat requested a wild card to play in the tournament,” said Tournament Director Kevin Martin. “He is extremely entertaining to watch and his current ranking does not reflect his talent. He is one of the elite tennis players in the world. Marat has been called the “future of tennis” and his two Grand Slam titles prove that.”

He was a semifinalist at Valencia and reached the round of 16 at AMS Indian Wells. Safin, who held the No. 1 ranking for nine weeks in 2000, owns 15 career singles titles including the US and Australian Open Grand Slam titles and five AMS singles titles. This will be his first appearance in Indianapolis since 2001. He is 7-2 on the Indianapolis hardcourts and was the runner-up in 2000 (l. to. Kuerten) and a semifinalist in 2001 (l to. Rafter).

Before turning pro in May of 2006, the 6’6” Querrey from Thousand Oaks, CA had an outstanding junior career. He ranked as high as No. 10 in the world on the ITF junior rankings. His career highlights thus far include winning the USTA Spring International Championships and the Easter Bowl in back-to-back weeks. The aggressive teen reached the quarterfinals at the French Open Juniors and the round of 16 at the Wimbledon and US Open Juniors. He played in the 2006 AMS Indian Wells as an amateur and reached the second round where he took a set from James Blake, before falling 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.

About Querrey, Martin said, “I had the chance to see Sam play at the NASDAQ in March and could see the potential he has. We are always looking for young players that are on the verge of breaking out in their pro career. Sam appears to be there.”

The RCA Championships is a world-class tennis event held annually in Indianapolis. The event, which traces its roots back to 1920, has hosted such notable players as Pete Sampras, Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick.

Tickets for the 2006 RCA Championships can be purchased by calling 800-622-LOVE or by visiting any Ticketmaster location. For more information please go to www.rcatennis.com.

Murray and Rusedski not playing Davis Cup? Im sad!

Yeah, this confuses me too. Even more confusing is that Bogdanovic who's on the alt list for newport the week before doesn't want a main draw spot here when his ranking could get it. I can only think he does want to play Davis Cup but that'd be a big turnaround in his attitude towards it.

From IndyStar

Marat Safin will make his first appearance in Indianapolis since 2001, as a wild-card entry in the July 17-23 RCA Championships, tournament director Kevin Martin announced Thursday.

Safin, a 26-year-old Russian, reached No. 1 in the rankings in 2000 and won the 2005 Australian Open, but he missed much of the second half of last year after knee surgery. He was the RCA runner-up in 2000 and a semifinalist in 2001.

Now ranked 87th, Safin had to take a wild card because he didn't enter the RCAs before the deadline.

Martin also announced another of his four total wild cards, Sam Querrey of California.

The 18-year-old was ranked among the top 10 juniors in the world in 2005 before turning pro. In March, he reached the second round at the ATP Masters Series event in Indian Wells, Calif., before losing to James Blake in three sets. Querrey needed a wild card to get into the RCAs because his ranking isn't high enough.

"We are always looking for young players that are on the verge of breaking out in their pro career," Martin said in a news release.

Martin still hopes Andre Agassi will make Indianapolis one of his final stops before retiring after U.S. Open. Agassi has said he plans to play four hardcourt tournaments before the Open.

Among Martin's other wild-card targets are eighth-ranked Tommy Robredo, No. 16 Marcos Baghdatis and No. 24 Tommy Haas.

I'm really annoyed that all these people who could have entered on their own ranking now want wildcards :retard: there are young american guys and guys who've been out on injury who really need them. next time I hope these guys will enter on time and then pull out if they later decide they don't want to play.

Great !

I think Tommy wants to play there.... most of the times the WC "targets" are because the players have requested it.... otherwise, tournaments would be wasting their times.... if a player didn't signed for your tournament and hasnt requested a WC... Why is he in your WCs list ??? Im almost sure Tommy asked for it...

Lets hope he plays there...

The tournament shouldn't have to be in a position to give high-ranked players WCs because they should be entering on their own. There are guys like Sam Querrey who deserve a shot to play in these tourneys and these indecisive players are taking their chances and I don't agree with it at all.

Rusedski out of RCAs
July 10, 2006

Greg Rusedski, the 2002 RCA Championships winner, has withdrawn from next week's tournament at the Indianapolis Tennis Center because of a hip injury.
RCA Championships director Kevin Martin had been set to announce that Nicolas Kiefer had accepted a wild card, but the 15th-ranked Kiefer determined this weekend that the wrist he injured at the French Open had not healed enough to play. Two wild cards remain for the tournament, which begins a week from today.

I don't think nationality has one iota to do with anything. Maybe they offered Kiefer a wc because he was a finalist a couple years ago? They can offer wildcards until the second the draw is made, so they can and probably will wait as long as they can before they decide. You guys just need to calm down and be a little more patient :)

Plus, Tommy could have entered on time with everyone else whose ranking was high enough when the entry list closed. But he didn't, so it's hard to feel badly for him if he's being made to wait to hear about a WC since it's his own fault

Anyway according to the site, he was already given the WC anyway, so everyone can just calm down now :) http://www.rcatennis.com/TopStory.section/pages/storiesc0d85792472.html

German Olympic Medialist Returns to Indianapolis first time since 2002
RCA Tennis Championships, July 10, 2006

INDIANAPOLIS… The RCA Championships, which will be held July 15-23 at the Indianapolis Tennis Center on the campus of IUPUI, filled one of its final two wild cards with ATP Tour veteran Tommy Haas.

The 28-year-old Haas, who is currently ranked No. 21 on the INDESIT ATP Rankings, will make his sixth appearance in Indianapolis. His return will be his first since losing in the semifinals to the 2002 singles champions Greg Rusedski.

The German, who has been ranked as high as No.2 in his career, jumped off to a career-best 23-6 start in the first four months of action winning ATP titles in Delray Beach and Memphis. He is currently 30-12 on the year with four of those losses happening at the hands of No. 1 Federer in the semifinals at Doha, Halle, 4th round at Australian Open and the 3rd round at AMS Miami.

“We are excited that the Indianapolis fans will get to see Tommy for the first time since 2002,” said RCA Tournament Director Kevin Martin.

“When Haas turned pro he was looked at carrying the torch for Germany after Boris Becker’s retirement with the talent he has. Haas’ ability has been tempered by an unfortunate string of injuries throughout his career but when he is healthy as he has been this season, he is considered one of the top players in the game.”

Haas finished in the top 50 for the eighth time in nine years in 2005 highlighted by four ATP semifinals. In February he reached back-to-back semifinals in San Jose and Memphis. In May, Haas helped his native country to the ATP World Team Championship over Argentina by winning three of four singles and doubles matches.

Haas, who began playing the game of tennis at the age of four, is a product of the prestigious Nick Bollettieri Academy. In addition to capturing nine career singles titles, owning an 18-4 career Davis Cup record and being named the 2004 ATP Comeback Player of the Year, Haas won the singles silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The RCA Championships still has one remaining wild card to award. “We are still pursing Andre Agassi, Tommy Robredo, Marcos Baghdatis or Donald Young to fill our last spot,” said Martin.

Tommy HAAS accepts WC!
Haas will be competing in Indianapolis 2006!

That´s a relief because I was afraid that HAAS wouldn´t play also
this week. HAAS has a good chance to take his 9th tournament victory.

Wow, 176 gaining direct entry into a tour level event. Anyway, good for Amer. Maybe he'll get a good draw and win a few matches. Odds are he'll face Reynolds in the first round. They always play each other.
