Just have thought he deserves one, or maybe will deserve it soon. Some people in the forum already know him  He's 17 y.o. and has something in the game and general appearance (Lacoste clothes? ) reminding of Grosjean. He won the first futures event few weeks ago, and today made a kind of ATP debut. Defeated Eric Taino 1-6 6-3 9-7 in Roland Garros quallies.

Even if he loses in second round to Lisnard / Darcis, this thread will be bumped sooner or later because I am not used to be mistaken in my choosing the promising juniors. Allez.

I'm happy to see he won the 1st round of the qualies. I like promising juniors. :)

Have you some pics of him? I don't really know what he looks like.

Thanks a lot. He's cute. :D

I hope he'll still be there for the 3rd round of the qualies so I'll be able to see him play. :)

good idea this cheering thread miss nathii :)

Your 1988 vintage did pretty well today. ;) Congrats to Adrian ! Next one will be tough against Darcis but the belgian doesn't seem to be in great shape (he retired from his last match before RG) so who knows...Anyway GL to Adrian :bounce:

Nathaliia
05-24-2006, 06:53 PM
Ewww, 4-6 6-1 6-8 against Darcis :(

He had 2-0 in the third set :shout: Nevermind, it's a talent and it's good he actually got the wild card to quallies. Now perhaps he'll be back on future level. He's never played a match in a challenger, I've checked. Just one three setter in chall. quallies - last year.
Greetings and till next time :wavey:

Hey Nathaliia. Do you have other pics of him?

I know what you mean about him looking like Grosjean. I had seen pics and I was like  Is he Grosjean's young brother??? ... but I can't find them now. :(

Nathaliia
05-25-2006, 05:01 PM
Hey Julie :wavey:

Pictures can be found on the website of one futures event he played this year in France and lost I think in 1st round. And on the website of the tournament he won (Spain). I have no idea how to find them now. When I said he reminded me about Grosjean, I mainly thought about his game, but yes there is something about his looks as well. ;)

I thought i would give this a bump since Adrian won a 2nd futures tournament at the end of last month, once more in Spain and on hard, and without losing a set :D

You are right, he does :scared: But clay is his worst surface.

He doesn't look like Nadal in person. Allez Adrian :clap2:

I saw him in Paris against Darcis. He should have won. I will have photos later, but I will post all my photos at the same time and I am still getting many developed. Stay tuned ;)

Well, maybe he's not in the same form now or Adrian has progressed since he's in the semis in Bressuire after beating Bachelot 6/4 6/4. ;)

He lost to the "has-been" 6/3 3/6 6/4. :p

But he still has the doubles final to play (with Ouanna).

Well, time for a bump because Adrian isn't ranked in 800ish anymore, but now at 367th place, in last 2 months he played 4 futures finals and won the 2 latest (incl. one last week, not losing a set).

This week plays Shrewsbury challenger against Fredrik Nielsen from Denmark, and I can already say I am sure I had jinxed him

For any Mannarino fans still left out there Adrian won the GB F2 Sheffield Futures event today, defeating Timo Nieminen 3-6 7-6(6) 6-2. I was at the event earlier on in the week and it was obvious from the outset that he was a good futures player and would be contending for the title come the end of the week.. Nice to see that he was able to keep up that form, defeating Nieminen isn't easy as he is very stubborn and difficult to break down.
Side-note: His ranking is currently 322 and he will rise further on Monday.

Nathaliia

Futures in France, in Lille next week (15K $)

Lugassy, Ouanna, Haehnel and Oger look like the biggest rivals, but Adrian can beat all of them I think now :). He was doing well on futures level before, he just needed the confidence in the challengers, and once he got it, it should be even easier in the futures. Me hopes :p.

I saw another Mannarino in the qualification draws of French futures, do you know if he's Adrian's brother? If it's the case, there's no birth date in ATP site, do you know how old is he?

Adrian Mannarino 29/06/1988

Iris Mannarino 11/03/1992

Thanks for your answer :)
Morgan is older than Adrian but we don't see him anymore in the futures
So they are 3, maybe the next years they all play Roland Garros like the Sanchez: Arantxa, Emilio and Javier ;)

Ok Thanks. So i have a question precisely about Besançon. Maybe you will know :). How make it that Adrian reached main draw after Ancic's withdraw ? Why isn't a player beaten in the third round of qualies who reach main draw ? I havn't understand this. But hopefully for Adrian, he was the lucky looser and did a good run in this tournament ! :yeah:

Nice ranking for Adrian, i think he can finished the year between the 100 and 150, it would be nice !

No, he's out for at least 6 weeks with his knee injury. There is a short interview of him in the last TM issue.
He's doing rehab and hopes to be able to resume the training in August and to play the qualies of the US Open. Otherwise he'll come back for the Orléans Challenger in September.
He seems in good spirits, though, means it could have been way worse if the cruciate ligament was damaged.

I've never seen him play, are there any good videos of him somewhere to get an idea of his game?

(He looks like a young Coria in many of the pics.)

Pixie
08-23-2008, 12:04 AM
Here are some videos though you won't see much given it was filmed in the public

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=xZmVOEwp1Yc

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=QHyGb6zu4Hk

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=cToI_PvPQKc

The first time I saw him play I thought about Coria though he doesn't have his genious of course. His shots aren't powerful though they have pace since he flatens them especially on the Bh side. He's got a very good hand-eye coordination hence a good return and he can create very good angles.

Renaud who saw him play one year after me told me that his serve lacks speed at his current level though he finds good trajectories.

Coria quoi :p

Truc
08-23-2008, 07:13 AM
Thanks, so is he even cultivating the Coria resemblance with his look?
Your description sounds great, I'll try to watch him next time there is a livestream for one of his matches.

In L'Equipe:Un espoir nommé Mannarino

DOMINIQUE BONNOTWhen he was one break down in the 3rd set of the 1st qualifying round against Eitzinger, he was thinking of "everything but winning". "I didn't feel like playing", he says. He had just won his 2nd Future of the year in Plaisir and 2 rounds in Grenoble, he was fed up. Far away from thinking of a win in straight sets over Seppi (#28)! That's what he did yesterday, though, and in style.
Small build (1,82 m, 64 kg), coming from a tennis family, he reminds of Coria with his cap, his touch and his way to vary the pace with ease.
Mannarino is not a braggart: "I'd like to enter the top 100 as soon as possible. But I don't like travelling. I fell well in France. It's not so expensive."
Money has been a big factor in his career. After having been coached by Raymond at the FFT, he was sent back to his tennis club in Eaubonne and his father has been taking care of his career since July 2007. "It wasn't working very well with the FFT, so..." Now he's taking responsibility for himself.
Tulasne who coached him for a while before Simon is very laudatory: "He's a little bit like Gilles. He has talent in the arm and in the eye. He has an excellent sense of the game. He's one of the biggest French hopes."
Adrian is asked to compare himself with the other guys from his generation who have made their breakthrough: "Del Potro, Gulbis, Cilic all are very tall and serve well. Maybe they are more ambitious. They have a bigger desire to win. Or they have more than me the feeling that they can win. I don't know/realize my potential. People say I have a great 'hand', but my hand is not working every day!"
For today's match he won't think of "the points and the prize money" (9200 euros). "Otherwise I will get tight!" he says with a smile.

And in Le Républicain Lorrain:Vous venez de signer votre première victoire sur le circuit ATP. Votre sentiment ?

Playing on court 1 helps feeling less pressure, one doesn't really realize it's an ATP event.
He had never seen Seppi play before, so he can't really say if Seppi played well or poorly, but he probably was having a bad day at the office. He arrived on Tuesday evening only, he was not well prepared for such a tournament. And the surface is a bit weird, so Adrian knew this was an opportunity for him.
He's training in his club in Eaubonne with his father.
He's a counterpuncher: he has neither an attacking nor a defending game. He tries to fight.
He can't really assess his potential. It would be pretentious to say he can enter the top 10 or top 20. He'll try to give everything and see how far he can go.
He isn't playing his best tennis in his opinion. He likes to play forward and fast, but the conditions in Metz don't really suit him. So he's trying to frustrate/outwit his opponents more than to impose his game here.

I really can't wait to see him tomorrow as a coriasimontarde:
(His game gave me some trouble today, he was playing even slower than me, that doesn't happen often!)

He'll play Gicquel, he said today he prefers to play Mahut because he likes to counter S&V games.

He has an article every day in L'Equipe:Attention, surdoué

On y prend goût.
»He says he was really, really scared when he had to serve it out, he couldn't move anymore.
It's his biggest prize money so far (9200 €). "I don't pay attention to the money, but I want to win matches to be able to play tournaments like this one every week. One gets used to it."
His game looks so easy, it seems he never overdoes it (they compare him with Simon again for that). His former coach at the FFT Laurent Raymond: "The faster it is, the better it is for him. He's exceptionally gifted, with a good mental structure, emotionally very steady."
The father gave up his teacher job to coach his son. It seems the father was the issue when it didn't work with the FFT and Adrian went back to his club and his father. But he still gets financial support from the FFT.
Raymond is quite enthusiastic and means there is one guy able to produce this kind of tennis every 3 years in the world.

TBH, I've heard from people who were in Metz yesterday that De Voest was really poor, so no reason to get carried away. But Adrian himself isn't, he keeps saying in interviews he doesn't find it that big to have won these 2 matches.

He's awesome!

In his audio interview he says he served very well today, so there were less rallies than in his other matches. He usually likes to play longer rallies.
When he's asked about the prospect of playing Paulo in the next round, he means he doesn't care as he doesn't know the other French players except for Gicquel. He played maybe once with PHM in the past. Paulo or Tipsy, it won't make any difference for him.
A tournament like Metz and the Future of Plaisir he won 2 weeks ago are as different as night and day in terms of organization. As for the level of game, it's a bit better in Metz, of course, but he had to beat very good players in Plaisir too, like Ouanna "who could be here in my place today" or Faurel, so it gave him some confidence.
He doesn't think he will panic tomorrow, he has won 6 matches in a row, "I don't know why I would start playing badly over night".
When he was a kid, he was appealed by the left-handed players, so Rios was a sort of idol. But he has "less and less idols".

Did someone manage to see the game? I tried to find a stream or something, cause he souds like an interesting guy to watch, but I found nothing.

There was a livestream on Betfair, but I'm not sure it was available in France since Paris Première must have the rights?

I live in Germany, so I watched it and he was great. But I saw him play for the first time too, so I can't say if he was particularly on fire today. He means he can play a bit better than that, even if he sounds much more satisfied with his match today than after the first rounds.
He could/should have won even faster, he really was the better player. He just had a terrible game in the 2nd set when Gicquel broke back (he says that when he sat down at 6-4 *2-1, he looked at the watch, saw '45 minutes' and thought maybe he would be able to win in one hour - I'm not sure it's the best thing to think at that point of a match! ) But the rest was impressive.
He really reminds of Coria in his game and his movement (the same light touch) - but with a better serve, at least today.

He says he's a rather nervous person, but controls his nerves better and better.
He'll play the qualies of Lyon after Rennes and Kolding.

Play the qualies of ATP tournament like Lyon is always a good training but maybe he can ask for a WC ? I don't know if it's a good idea but he deserves one imo.

Thanks for all the articles/videos Fran, it's nice to hear more from him..

I agree that he certainly played well today (maybe the best I've seen from him too ), although I haven't seen him play since Surbiton back in June. His serve certainly seemed better than I remember it.
Congratulations Adrian on your 1st ATP semi, hope he can make the match against Paulo competitive, too.

Saw him a couple of years ago at RG Qualies against Darcis and took an instant liking towards him :yeah: He can really mix up his game.

Also saw him get very painfully injured at Wimbledon qualies this year. It was really, really heartbreaking. I see he is still playing with a bandage on his knee out of protection.

The summary of the article in L'Equipe:
Gicquel wasn't looking so disappointed after his defeat: "He's very solid. He returned well. I tried out different tactics, soft balls on the BH side, more aggressive in the rallies, S&V... He doesn't rush. He moves very well. He's dangerous when you try to play a winner. He isn't much to look at with his cap, but he plays very, very well." He had already beaten him in Besançon in 3 sets in February, but in Besançon "he gave me the 1st set 6-0. Here he's playing the right shots."

The soundness of his tactical choices and the ease to execute these shots are very appealing. Also his coolness, for example when he closed it out with a dropshot volley yesterday. Boutter (the tournament director): "I'm a fan. He has everything I was never able to acquire despite of working 6 hours a day: the talent and the easiness. He's zen too. He reminds me of two players at the same time: Rios and Mutis. Both exceptionally gifted in their own way. If he works on his condition, he'll be top 20 in one year."

The father gave up on his job to coach his son (he's tennis teacher, btw, yesterday's article sounded like he was a school teacher), but he isn't as 'dominant' as one might think first: "I'm not coaching Adrian, he is coaching himself and I'm there. I only tell him what he is willing to hear." He's not surprised by the success of his son: "He was lacking a little something. But he's had a fabulous hand and eye since he's 5 years old. He has great mental qualities and he showed them in that match. He was just a little bit better, but he managed to finish it off."

Former fan of Rios and Gaudio ("all the players with a strong personality because I'm a very nervous player who destroys racquets too, even if I'm controlling myself better now"), his game belongs more into the Simon-Murray-Mecir category: "I'm a counter player. I like to play slowly. My game is based on variations of pace. The idea is to provoke the error of the opponent rather than to win the point. I tend to stay behind my baseline and give the ball as less quality as possible to disturb the opponent. It's fun. Well, it is when you see the other guy make an error, not when he plays a winner after you put on a sprint 5 or 6 times during the rallye"!
The journalist means he's too modest and doesn't stress he can also finish the points very well, moving into the court, and that his left arm reminds of Golmard.
But Adrian means he hasn't really a strong shot. "All my shots are... not bad, but they all are perfectible. I have a complete game, but I always have the impression that I can do better."

And the box at the bottom "Why so late?" (= why is he still pretty much unknown?). They give 3 reasons:
- he grew up late. "I was trying my best, but I wasn't among the best. Guys like Del Potro or Gulbis grew up all at once".
- lack of means. "I didn't play a lot of Juniors events. I was neither at the FFT nor in a tennis academy. It's expensive to travel on the Junior tour [and he doesn't like to travel either]. So I focussed on the Futures and Challengers by the age of 15 already." And it is paying off now: "The juniors are 'pampered', that's why so many of them have trouble moving their ass afterwards. My experience makes me really raring to win when I play a tournament like this one."
- lack of media exposure. "I'm less known than Chardy, Eysseric or Sidorenko. They've always had a greater media exposure than me. I was in the background compared to them, but I don't mind. I like being left alone to do my job. I'm perfectly fine that way."

Who is that?
Edit: probably Diego Junqueira, it's a pic from his match against Junqueira on Getty - they picked the only one with the wrong legend.

At least they've corrected his height, he's been in talk for about 3 days only and I'm already so sick of the jokes about him being 3 m tall. ^^
But it's not completely accurate imo, he said he's 1,82 m and 64-65 kg.
He plays like many of the 1,75 m guys (Mutis, Rios, Grosjean, Coria...), but his build looked "Simonesque" to me.
