About Sydney reference....I really don't know why he chose this tournament either, but Sydney's one, at least due the draw doesn't seem that interesting, he'd have been good to spice up things there....

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (Ticker) - Coming off a breakthrough season, Guillermo Coria got 2004 off to a good start.

Coria, who reached seven finals and won five titles last season, notched a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over Germany's Nicolas Kiefer in the first round of the $404,000 Heineken Open on Monday.

The top-seeded Coria notched 60 match victories last season and reached the semifinals of the French Open. He was the first Argentine to win five tournaments in a season since Guillermo Vilas (7) and Jose-Luis Clerc (5) in 1982 and finished the year ranked fifth in the world.

Tennis: Coria advances after tough opener

Top seed Guillermo Coria safely negotiated his opening match at the Heineken Open tennis tournament here tonight but not without a fight from unseeded German Nicolas Kiefer.

Coria's 7-6 6-3 win thrilled the almost-capacity opening day crowd, with both players bringing their power to centre court.

The first set was an hour-long slugfest in which the lines on all parts of the court were under constant attack, leading to some controversial calls.

The set was eventually decided in a tiebreaker in which Kiefer lost the last three points.

Coria took the early advantage in the second set when he broke his 26-year-old opponent for 2-0 and again later en route to wrapping it up 6-3.

Coria will now play the winner of tomorow's clash at the ASB Bank Tennis Centre between New Zealand's Mark Nielsen and former winner Dominik Hrbaty.

i'm sure he just took his wedding ring of, because it might be awkard to play?! I've never seen other players with rings on during their matches. I think it's just akward, your hands get all sweaty and stuff so...

Tim Henman does, so does Jiri Novak, i can imagine them not wanting to it would be rather uncomfortable...they can always do a Beckham and wear a plaster around the ring ;)....but Guille has always worn it around his neck, I love it when he kisses the ring after he gets an important point...sweet :)

yes, they say it's stomach strain (in ATP site under results) Hope he's all right. Maybe he wants to save himself and tries to get well before Australian Open.

Coria Withdraws From Heineken Open
Top seed and world number five Guillermo Coria has withdrawn from the 2004 Heineken Open after suffering from an abdominal strain.

Coria who turned 22 yesterday visited a hospital and was advised by medical staff to not continue playing.

Heineken Open tournament director Graham Pearce said.

"The tournament and the tennis public are extremely disappointed that Guillermo has had to withdraw from the Heineken Open due to injury. It is important that the health of a young tennis player with a brilliant future is protected and medical advice must be followed.

"Fortunately we have a excellent field so we can continue with a great week of tennis."

He was to play Dominik Hrbaty in the second round of the Vodafone singles today. Hrbaty will receive a walkover into the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The Heineken Open continues today with many exciting matches including defending champion Gustavo Kuerten up against Spain's Alberto Martin plus another exciting Spaniard Rafael Nadal, 17 playing this evening against qualifier Mario Ancic of Croatia.
