8 wins in a row and counting...I know Nadal has like 50 matches won, but still, this is a good record for David  I wonder if it's the longest on clay...

Argentine girl

http://www.internazionaliditalia.it/

World number three David Nalbandian looked every bit the consumate professional on centre court on Thursday, taking down his Spanish opponent Alberto Martin 7-5 6-4.
Playing controlled tennis and breaking serve and the right moments, Nalbandian proceeds to the quarter final, where he will meet either Mario Ancic or another qualifier, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.
The only wobble in his third round came in the first set. The Argentine raced off to a 3-0 lead only to see Martin, who won their only previous meeting, come back to level at 5-5.
"I try to put on my best tennis when the crucial points come along," he said after the match. The top two in the world were not "unreachable," he said.Nalbandian moves to an impressive 23-5 for the season, and 11-1 on clay. He has an all-court game and good temperament. Given that these qualities seem to have combined with a run of form, those predisposed to bet might want to have a flutter on Nalbandian upsetting both Federer and Nadal to take the tournament. The odds would no doubt be interesting.

Ok, so it was a better record at the end of last year and beginning of this one...
Still, considering it's his worse surface, it's quite good. Let's hope he can make it to 9 :yeah: and maybe 10...I'd love to see him playing and beating Federer on clay :)

While the spotlight remains fixed on the top two, Nalbandian has emerged as the player most likely to cause an upset.

The Argentine, winner of last week's claycourt event in Estoril, is set for a semi-final meeting with Federer, whom he has beaten in six of their 10 head-to-heads.

Before that, he must get past Croatia's Mario Ancic, who beat Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-3 6-7 7-5.

2/05/2006 14:37 - NALBANDIAN STORMS INTO THE SEMIS

David Nalbandian moved into the semi-final of the Rome masters series in straight sets 6-3 6-3 against Mario Ancic on Friday, declaring after the match that he was "on great form".
The Argentine, now number three in the world, will be fresh for his match against either Roger Federer or Nicolas Almagro on Saturday given that Ancic offered only minimal resistance in the one hour, twenty minute match, which contained few great rallies for the busy centre court to cheer.
Nalbandian raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set before losing a service game. This was his only noticeable weakness on Friday: his first serve consistency fell below 50%.
Ancic on the other hand was constantly punished for weak second serving and seemed tired after his marathon third round win. The Croatian has also suffered from a back injury.
Nalbandian moves to within two wins of consecutive titles.
"I was a bit tired coming here after Estoril last week, in my first round and second round, but now I feel fine and I'm on great form," he said.

Well what can I say?
I'm proud of his performance, the way he stayed with Fed and the way he fought all the way. When he was serving to stay in the match I thought he was gonna lose serve, but he somehow held it. This proves that winning Shanghai and beating Fed there was no fluke! He won the last final set TB against Fed, this time he came up short.
Credit to Fed, he deserved his win and good luck to him in the final.

It's been a good few weeks for him and hopefully he can go deep in Paris.

One thing though, not that David needs to prove anything to anyone. And even if he had, it would certainly be to himself, and to the people close to him. Definetly not to us, and to a bunch of posters at a message board.

Yeah of course he should have won. But his serve in a way stopped him from that! I mean in this game...David had exactly one point less than Federer...114:115 or something like that! kyla, i'd like to have a yonex shirt actually, don't know where i can buy one, maybe on internet.

*sigh* i'm so sad when david loose, but it's not as if it was an early loose against a nobody, its a SF of a TMS against the world number one. But david was above fed he was just nervous at the end IMO, that's what make me a little disapointed. If it was a 5-set match, i think david would have won this match 'cause fed was tired.

But it's very good to see david is playing good tennis 2 weeks before RG, it means he can do well there, at least QF if he has a good draw ! I also like the fact he pulled out of Hamburg to rest, he is smart, he doesn't want to overplay and get an injury just before RG.

I'm very proud to be a david's fan and i will support him in all his matches :) :) :) VAMOS DAVID !!!

:)

I am only posting this article because of what David said. When everyone talks about rivalries, it used to be Federer/Roddick [yeah, right] and now it's Federer/Nadal [rivalry, what rivalry?]. If you ask me, the real rivalry is betw Federer and Nalbandian -- always has been and still is. At 6-5 for David, that's what I call a more even matchup. And what I like about it is that they continue to go back and forth... not this lopsided 10-1 or 5-1 hth. I have to laugh!

I know it's tough for David to lose to Rogi in the SF but Rafa avenged his loss, so it's OK for him; besides, David got Rogi for the big TMC Shanghai05. I'm glad that David is No 3 -- he is finally living up to his talent and that's a good thing. ;) I enjoy watching him play, w his calm, unhurried, relaxed way. He and Gaudio, my fave Argies [after Vilas].

Good luck to David in Dusseldorf!

Federer a rare underdog for Rome Masters final
Associated Press
Sat, May 13, 2006

ROME -- Top-ranked Roger Federer and No. 2 Rafael Nadal will meet for the third time this year Sunday in the Rome Masters final.

Federer advanced to his 13th straight final with Saturday`s error-filled 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) win over No. 3 David Nalbandian. Nadal defeated 19-year-old Gael Monfils of France 6-2, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

Nadal registered his 52nd straight win on clay and can match Guillermo Vilas` Open-era record of 53 wins on the surface if he successfully defends his title on Sunday.

Nadal is the only player to beat Federer this year, in finals at Dubai in March and the Monte Carlo Masters last month. He holds a 4-1 edge in his career meetings with Federer, including a semifinal win at last year`s French Open.

has Roger Federer set as a +162 underdog against Nadal (-225) for Sunday`s final.

Federer finished with 50 unforced errors to Nalbandian`s 53 in the clay-court tuneup to the French Open, which begins May 28. The Swiss star said he is looking forward to the matchup with Nadal.

``I`m ready,`` he said. ``I think it`s always special to have 1 versus. 2. It`s good for the game and I think both of us look forward to it. Especially on clay, it`s a good challenge for me.``

Federer`s win over Nalbandian tied him with Vilas for the second-most consecutive finals in the Open era. Ivan Lendl holds the record at 18 straight finals, set in 1981-82.

Nadal`s clay-court streak started at Monte Carlo in April 2005. During the run, he`s defeated 38 different opponents from 15 countries. He defeated Argentines Guillermo Coria and Gaston Gaudio three times and eight players twice, including Federer.

Vilas, in a recent conference call from Thailand, expects Nadal to break his streak.

``I will be very surprised if he doesn`t,`` Vilas said. ``He`s a very strong player, he has a strong will. He has a strong gift of hands and he`s a fighter. He seems to lift his level in the crucial moments.``

Vilas set the record in 1977, beginning the streak in May at the French Open and ending with a loss to Ilie Nastase in October in Aix en Provence, France.

Against Nalbandian, Federer struggled with his accuracy for long periods, but regained form midway through the third set.

After trading breaks twice in the decisive set, Federer took control of the tiebreaker with a backhand service return winner to go up 6-4. The match ended when Nalbandian`s forehand sailed long on Federer`s second match point.

``He was just better,`` Nalbandian said. ``He did it at the right time.``

In their last meeting, Nalbandian beat Federer in a fifth-set tiebreaker at the Masters Cup final in November in Shanghai.

In a nervous opening set, neither player held serve in the first four games. The key break came when Federer stretched to return a serve and came up with a forehand winner down the line to take a 5-3 lead.

Nalbandian jumped out to a 40-0 lead in the next game, but wasted each of his break points on errors. Two points later, Federer closed out the set when Nalbandian hit a backhand into the net, prompting the Argentine to slam his racket to the ground.

``I had a lot of chances to break that I didn`t take advantage of,`` Nalbandian said, referring to his converting five of 16 break points.

In the second set, Nalbandian converted the only break of serve to take a 3-1 lead. Both players continued to hit more unforced errors than winners. Nalbandian said that fast and slippery conditions contributed to the erratic play.

``It was difficult to stop your feet,`` he said.

In the opening game of the third set, Federer slammed his racket when he hit a forehand way wide to lose a service game.

``He`s human,`` Nalbandian said.

Federer also reached the Rome final in 2003, losing to Felix Mantilla.

Other quotes:

The top two in the world were not "unreachable," he said.

Nalbandian: The French is always special. It's a very long tournament, there are very long matches, so you need to be very fit. I think that I can be one of the guys who is gonna fight for the title for sure. I am very confident in my game, playing better every time. I'm sure that Nadal, Federer and Gaudio together with a lot of clay court players are gonna play well in Paris as well.

Q: What does it take to beat Federer and Nadal on clay?

Well I haven't played with Nadal yet, so I can't tell you. With Federer I haven't played on clay for I don't know: four or five years....I know that I can beat anybody.

I know that people think David is being arrogant. Perhaps not arrogant but w this attitude, you can get somewhere. No sense defeating yourself even before you step on the court vs. a player. I like it! David's a funny guy. He's also maturing a lot lately...
