from the article..

"Rafael Nadal has been named as the ATP European Player of the Year for 2005 as voted by the ATP’s European tournament directors."

"The ATP European Player of the Year Award is based on diverse criteria, including a player’s final INDESIT ATP Ranking position, attitude towards media and sponsors, cooperation with the European events, and number of tournaments played. Spaniard Carlos Moya won the inaugural award in 2002, while Roger Federer claimed the honors the following two years."

Yes, I remember now that the award isn't just about how successful a European player is, it's to do with their co-operation and participation in European tournaments. Bearing in mind Federer has played, what, 12 tournaments in Europe since the end of 2003 and been forced to skip the indoor season altogether twice in a row, perhaps it's no surprise he wasn't going to get it for a third year running.

Interesting that Roger doesn't play more at "home" in Europe. Not to downplay Nadal's win, but I never really thought of the regionality of both of their successes before.

The last couple of years he's been injured during the indoor season. But I don't mind because he does quite well here in the good ol USA. :D

Anyway, congrats Rafa! :yeah:
