Someone who is watching-- is Roge playing terrible or rafa is playing too great or both or neither??
Details?by the 3rd shot in a rally, fed will hit it long or wide...he is VERY VERY tight and constricted. NOT from nadal's play AT ALL just the pressure of the expectations & occasion. it started in the first game & the game ended with a double fault. 12 UE in first 3 games despite no long rallies, and when he takes a big chance, he misses. so that is keeping his confidence down. first set really was his worst.

he's freeing up a little here in the 2nd set....but for the most part, nadal --once again-- is not being tested enough to judge how is game is today. BUT it sure easy easy to play with confidence with fed not putting pressure on him and seeming so nervous! that alone could bolster nadal as we go on.

ah., there we have it--nadal just broke, and the announcer said, "and fittingly the game ends with yet another federer error. its a bit of a nightmare for the worlds #1 today."

bandabou, federer doesnt usually jut hit the ball into the net after a few strokes, and the announcer as i'm typing just said, 'nadal has really done nothing special, federer has just made way too many errors to compete.'

if he starts playing as he did the rest of the tournament, he could fry rafa. but if he wats til hes down 2 sets to 0, that will be a mighty tall order!

he's lost these other matches to nadal, he still is trying to prove hes great even on clay--lots of pressure he is putting on himself. but so far this match has been about the pressure he is putting on himself, not the pressure nadal is putting on him.

Exactly!!! I am afraid daze 11 is DAZED AND CONFUSED. RAFA doing nothing special??? Fed ONLY losing cause he is making errors?? Rafa is FORCING these errors by his stellar play! Besides the commentators are saying opposite to what the TTC commentators are saying. I guess its a matter of opinion and you obviously want to beleive anything that makes u feel better as a Fed fan. AND FYI I am a fan of neither. I am just a fan of tennis and Rafael Nadal DESERVES any accolades or respect he is given. This guy is DARN good. Lookm beyond his speed, strength and lefty forehand. This guy is one hell of a smart tennis player. You only have to watch his matches to see his tennis nous.

This tournament, and especially thi final has convinced me that Federer's backhand is indeed a weak shot. He has improved a lot on it, but it is not world class. Nadal has been smart enough to hit a lot of balls to Federer's backhand and Federer is having a lot of miss-hits. Even in the previous rounds, I wasn't impressed with the way Federer played his backhand. I hope Federer works more on his backhand, cos right now he seems a bit nervous when he has to play it.

Nadal choked while serving for the second. Fed was also choking but managed to get the break. If Fed wins this match that would be the key moment in the match. Good for him for hanging in there and staying tough.

bandabou
04-23-2006, 02:14 PM
Yeah....but the thing is Roger likes to hit his forehand inside-out, usually to a player's backhand..but with Nadal he's playing it to the guy's forehand, so Nadal can hit it to the open court...should just hit it dtl more often.

About the backhand, it has become quite good....but clay is merciless surface and they re gonna pound that backhand, so indeed more work is needed.

nadal has called for the trainer...he had the trainer put tape on his hand at the start of the match, and is haulting play now that fed was getting that momentum. BOTH tennis channel announcers are saying they agree that nadal can tape his own hand and --while ok within the rules-- it is a bit calculated to have the trainer do this for him just now. "its a rotten rule," he just said, "its appauling that federer should now have to wait after working so hard to get any energy going." then he said, "but dont blame nadal, blame the rule."

so now more an actual picture is emerging...fed has been off so he needs to build the confidence by PLAYING INTO POINTS. what rafa is doing that is smart is putting enormous pressure on the backhand until roger has NO IDEA when he will hit to the forehand, and then he is not prepared to hit his good forehands either. with that working so well, rafa is NOW gaining confidence because he is seeing the aggression is paying off.

in contrast, without roger finding a way to self-start, i am under some impression that he is NOT sure what TACTIC to take, and it is rafa that has figured out a real tactic first. took over 2 sets to even get to the point where there was enough tennis to see where they're at. but federer will HAVE to start taking charge on his serve to start and get into some groove to at least find the form to put up a proper fight.

That is why Rafa will always be a tough match-up for him. More than the Nadal forehand or the fact that he is left-handed, it is his movement. Nadal is the only guy on tour at the moment that Roger seemingly can't out-manoeuvre.

verrrry bad sign for roger.....had the point all set up to cream a forehand winner and hit it--from short in the court--so far wide it passed the doubles line!! then he screamed at himself in english, "idiot!" not good...

both points he got were on rafa's double faults...then he just hit a forehand long after rafa hit aboout 6 to his backhand to keep him unsure. got to hand that to nadal. roger is off by a wide range but rafa is keeping him in that box.

unfortunately i have to go pretty soon, so i wont be able to give y'all a birds eye of the action. but i can tell you, federer has found SOME KIND of comfort zone here at the moment. and while nadal is still very focused, hes now in a FAIR position to believe he can close this set with his momentum, and then...well, its just 1 more set. and after playing so many poor sets, odds are against his playing a bad 5th set, for sure.

every time i look up, he is building momentum....fed fans can hang in there with some reasonable confidence, it would seem.

the match on paper appears close except for the unforced errors on feds part. it must be so hard for him since he has everything to lose while nadal nothing. (nadal just picked at another wedgie) i think the most telling stat was 4-18 break pts squandered by tmf while nadal convered 7/14. fed realy just lost it mentally before the match started but we did have two close sets so of course fed can compete. overall though nadal was in complete control

I really wouldn't put too much thought into this match if you happen to be a fan of either player.
Federer has never even gotten close to winning this tournament until today.
The clay here is as slow as you can get in Europe.
It's even slower than Roland Garros.
Federer did what he could.
Federer should have kept his mouth shut though.
If this was the clay of Hamburg then maybe I could understand why Federer would say what he had to say.
I would like to mention that there is a reason Nadal hasn't played Hamburg and dares not to come on a clay surface that compliments Federer's game.
It's not though. It was a foolish move on his part.

Roger played good in patches (4th set down 3 0), unfortunately, in the tie break he let one slip and that was enough for Nadal to crawl back into the match.

Either way, good match from Nadal. Way to do whatever he does, it's not tennis, but whatever it is. Good job. He's won fair and square. That's all to be required of the boy.

Nice to see people using words like owned and so forth, especially when their avatars are splattered with a collection of Roger's victims whom he chooses to whore out on the court as he pleases.

Federer has turned Centre Court into a Bordello and insert players name here to find out whom is the bitch of the day.

No sour grapes here, this boy is an absolute terror to play and watch.

Well done to Rafa but once again the forums go completely over the top.

Sure, this one defeat means Roger will never win the French Open, it also means Rafa is the greatest player of all time and he can never lose that status

I mean, this was very promising for Fed, he was 2 points away from taking it to a fifth set at his least favourite clay TMS. That isn't bad. He proved he can take Rafa to the limit and with all respect to Rafa for winning there is no way in hell that Rafa "owned" Fed in this match.

Nadal was unbelievable , played brilliantly and deserved the win. On the other hand Federer is such a great fighter he never gave up and always believed he could come back. Federer at the moment is just simply not good enough to beat Nadal on clay. He needs to improve his backhand and develope a drop shot (perhaps a shot forehand slice) if he wants to beat Nadal.

Roger said he was gonna be patient, he came out anxious in the start of the match, sloppy, sloppy.

a great win for Nadal
Federer is getting close
& will learn form this in the future
Nadal definitely seems to be the player who has figured Federer out
it was by no means an easy match
clay court season just started
we might see those 2 playing each other
more in the coming weeks

Congrats to Nadal, give him all the credit.

I am so sick of this, even Fed fans have to admit, Roger is clueless out there against Rafa.He makes a ton of mistakes, i am sick of it!I was rooting for Roger and he kept making mistakes after mistakes. What do you want him to do? I was pissed today too. It's just like Coria and his double faults. How do you correct it? I honestly don't think Roger feels he can beat Rafa right now. As a fan all I can hope for is he doesn't let it affect him overall and maybe one day will be able to turn it around. I mean after loosing in Dubai he did come back and win IW and Miami. So hopefully he can put this loss behind him and move on.

Sloppy would describe perfectly the status of Lleyton Hewitt's game right now.

U.S Open 2004 Final. What happened ?
U.S Open 2005 SF. Where was Lleyton ?
Wimbledon 2005 SF. Lleyton, where are you ?

Federer will never win the french unless Nadal loses early.Seriously he breaks down mentally when he faces Nadal. Also he shanks so many shots and his backhand lets him down.

For Federer's sake I hope not, because he'll be finding himself in the 'pigeons' thread very quickly. :tape:

But Rome and Hamburg should be fun, hope the two of them can put in some good performances. Though Nadal does have a couple tough young guys in his draw at Barcelona (Berdych, Djokovic), he should be able to meet or surpass Borg's record. And I'm assuming he'll have to win Barcelona and do decently at Rome to get the all time one, which'll be amazing.

:haha: :haha:

I'm a huge rafa fan (see my avatar) and have been known to cry when federer hits mind-blowing shots and go off on half hour drunken tangents about his brilliance at parties. Both of them are great champions and living legends already; I adore them both.

That said, the rest of the ATP tour may definitely be roger's harem, but rafa owns him. OWNS him. I think the fact that roger played so sloppily today (though, yes, brilliant patches as you noted) proves this. He was seriously psyched out by Rafa and could not play his best consistently as a result. Will be interesting to see what happens in roma, hamburg and paris. Let's see if roger can shake off the fear.

Nadal is just too good on clay, congrats, but i'm proud of Roger for hanging out there, too bad he made too many ue's, but hey, we fedtards love him.

I agree. This is a very promising result for Federer.
He's never made it to the finals of the very slow courts of Monte Carlo before.
He lost to Rafa on a surface that compliments every single part of his game.
Things will be different in Hamburg where Federer is the defending champion.
The clay there is faster and does not bounce up as high.
I'm starting to think Federer tricked all of us today.
He wasn't talking about this match. I have a feeling he knew he was going to lose.
I think he's forecasting what could happen in Hamburg.
That one-dimensional part of Rafa's game depends so much on how the clay is playing from tourni to tourni.

I find it strange that everyone assumes Roger will go on a bad run after losing a match. Look at his recent defeats. Lost to Gasquet then went and won Hamburg, lost to Rafa then went and won Halle and Wimbledon, lost to Nalbandian then went and won Doha and the AO, lost to Rafa then went and won Indian Wells and Miami.
