Let me be as clear as I can possibly be:

THERE IS NO WAY, NO WAY THAT NADAL WILL LOSE TO FEDERER TOMORROW. Rafa is in his head, of the 4 matches that Federer lost last year, only the Nadal match was the one where he had no chance of winning. All the others, he had match points and shot a tweener,(Safin) or just choked away the lead when serving for the match (Nalbandian). Nadal truly owned him at RG last year. Fed beat him ONCE on hard courts, and Rafa was 2 points from the match, and Rafa has won the last 2 encounters. Rafa has that 41 match winning streak on clay going too. He is the King Of Clay, and Fed is the merely the Prince.

Monte-Carlo: Lendl vs. Wilander, '85, Lendl won 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and the draw was only 48, and it wasnt a TMS until 1990

Rome: Vilas vs. Gerulaitis, '79  Vilas won, 6-7, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, again, not a TMS until 1990

but before that,

Lendl vs. Mecir, '87, Lendl won 6-1, 6-3, 6-3, with a 56 draw, and again, not a TMS until 1990

Roland Garros: Mcenroe vs. Lendl, '84 :worship: Lendl won 3-6, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, 7-5, the only GS that Mcenroe didnt win that year when he went 82-3.

Yes, this is the most likely outcome tomorrow. It doesn't help that Roger is prepared for Nadal's game and knows what to wait for. After two gruelling sets he's still going to find out how hard it is to go on hitting those winners against a guy who never stops and never loses his intensity.

But then again, Nadal is not a machine and even he can get down on himself and lose the spirit, which happened against Blake in Indian Wells. So if Fed starts exceptionally well, doesn't lose too much energy in the first 2 sets and stays positive, he might actually wear Rafa down.

Wish RonE had access to a computer. I want to read his posts on this match up again;)

Since you asked so nicely:

Nadal is the favourite to win this match. I voted for Nadal to win in 4.

However, the one big difference in this match as opposed to their previous encounters is that for the first time Federer goes in as the underdog. That may be the determining factor, however it all depends on Roger approach to the match.

From what I have seen of their previous matchups, Nadal does trouble Federer with the topspin to the B/H however the issue here is not so much technical as it is mental. It is the constant barrage and the fact that Roger constantly has to win the point 3 or 4 times in a rally playing a high risk game.

In Dubai Roger did show glimpses of a slightly different approach- work Nadal around the court, throw in a few slices, loopy shots etc and suddenly nail a big F/H. He was quite successful when he mixed the play as opposed to just trying to bludgeon Nadal. The question that remains to be seen is wether Roger can keep on doing it over a 5 set match especially on clay where Rafa has a lot more time to return the big shots.

The odds are stacked quite heavily in Nadal's favour, however I feel the more Roger plays him the better off he will fare against him in future matches and on clay too.

In the odd chance that Roger does win the match it will give him a huge confidence boost and could potentially fuel him to even greater heights over the next few months.

That is my take on the match.

We now return you to the trash talking slugfest.

"Nadal in four," speaketh the voice of reason, yet the heart crieth, "Ninja!"

Ultimately--meaning in time for the French--Federer needs to learn to beat Nadal, and I think playing him as often as possible will do him more good in the long term than an increasingly lopsided head-to-head will do him mental harm. Therefore I am not disappointed that someone else didn't take out Nadal earlier, even if it means Federer doesn't win this one. Plus rivalry=good. I'm prepared for defeat, as prepared as I'm capable of being, and will be proud of Rafa if his clay streak continues. Then, of course, I will be delighted if I wake up to a champion with the first three TMSs and the first GS of the year.

Federer is extremely hungry for Clay success this year which he hopes will culminate with taking the French Open title.

I think Federer will win in 4 sets.

This is just fanboy talk right here. Roger has a good chance to beat Nadal!

I'm lost at predicting this match...

Roger seems in good form at the moment, but when it comes to Nadal, things are different cuz the match-up doesn't favor Roger at all, and the match-up thing will always be there no matter what forms they are in.

I hope Roger can stay with Nadal physically, as well as mentally. That will be the key.

I just want Roger to win, no matter in which way for low long, even if it's 5 hours of ugly tennis.

I think Nadal still has to be seriously exhausted to lose on clay, a la Valencia 2005. Nadal will win in 3, and cause Federer's first straight set loss in almost two years. If they meet once more during clay season, Roger could be up for the pigeon thread :scared:.

The minute Fed wins a match against Nadal, especially on clay, he's going to own Nadal for the rest of his career.

The one-dimensional one will probably win.

Now let's see if he can get himself in a position to play Roger at the top grass and HC tourneys the way Roger did at the RG and MC on clay.

If Roger loses this match I think it doesn't matter for him because he will have taken away a good idea of what tactic is best to try and defeat Rafa on clay in the future. He has already done better here than most people expected and now joins a small list of players to have reached the final of all three clay TMS.

If Rafa loses this match things could be different. He might deal with it well but he might not. It will snap a very long streak on clay and Rafa will failed to win in the first tournament he is defending this year. Also he may not feel as confident going into the rest of the clay season.

It will be a great match for sure.

I think it is widely accepted that Federer is the No.2 player on dirt so from my way of thinking it was expected he was to reach the final and play Nadal, the No.1.

It's more important for Federer to win this match than Nadal from a "who is going to win the French Open" perspective, another clay court beatdown is going to damage him mentally leading to the French Open.

I think many people had not already became convinced that Roger is #2 on clay. Somehow in discussions of favourites on the dirt, Nadal-Coria-Gaudio-Ferrero are mentioned and Federer seems to be considered good-but-not-a-top-contender. Time for everyone to revise that opinion? At least Roger has had good runs in all major clay events, as stebs pointed out.

If Roger wins, Nadal is done for the year and he will never win Federer again. Looking forward to reading the classical excuses if Rafa does, though.
