Fantastic! Fantastic! Fantastic! Let the dirtball trolls snicker but the fact is, for Fish to string together more than two good match wins--let alone win two titles in a row--is unheard of for him. In fact, this is the first time he's done so in his career.

From zero expectations to 2x winner, I am thrilled for him. Welcome back, Mardy. :D :D :D

didn't Mardy win a title in Stockholm or somewhere like that? Is that a part of the US now? ...

Anyway, Congrats Mardy. 175 points, he's going to jump about a hundred places in the Entry rankings (okay, maybe not that much). And he's off to Bermuda to play another tournament on clay and the rest of the draw should be afraid... (unless he pulls out). Kind of doing the same thing James did about this time last year.

OK I was joking. Not "definitely", :rolls: but should be considerable. His match against Moya on spain clay wasn't that bad,we knew the result after the first set though. And other Americans can't play on clay well too.Normally they will pick the duck,James and Bryans, but excluding "sure win" twins who knows what their form will be in these months.Anyway, their chance is low. :o

That is almost a one hundred spot jump. Not bad for just guessing off the top of my head, I didn't even look at the rankings. He'll be about 16th on the Alternate list for Roland Garros, so I guess he'll have to play qualies. Well, it worked for James last year so Mardy should be okay too.

Nice one Mardy. Is he this year's Blake? Probably not, but I guess I like him on the court more than Ginepri. He jumps to the top 130, about 80 places in the rankings. If he sticks to challengers for the next couple of months, he might get a main draw direct entry to the next two slams.

Wahooo... go Fish. That was a great performance by him. Very happy I got to attend the match as I figured a win would be a huge moment in either of the finalists' careers. The play was like watching hardcourt tennis on dirt, but Fish's shotmaking won out in the end.

Another thing I learned today is that Melzer is hilarious, and his doubles partner Knowle (who laughed off a bad hit to the head from his partner during the match lol) is equally as gracious.

I work at MD Anderson and appreciate tremendously Blake's donation as well as the other donations he inspired. Good for him, especially as I got to buy tickets under an employee discount. Woohoo ;)

I seriously can't get over the sheer obnoxious nature in which certain Americans approach clay season. He's playing a bunch of green clay challengers... same as Blake last year. Blake won 2 of them. Mardy's entered 4 of them but for his sake I hope he doesn't end up playing all of them. But decent results in like a couple of those would get him into the top 100 easily, so I don't think that's really that bold of a prediction you made :)

Mardy is playing at a level where he is the favorite in many, if not all, Challenger tournaments. That doesn't sound like a particularly horrible route for him to take. If his BH = Love, then I suppose he will set forth a new formula during green clay season:

BH x Love x Love Games = CH wins

BH x Love x Love Games = CH winsI think that was my point? He's already played 2 full weeks of tennis, if he keeps up the level, I hope he doesn't play all 4 of the challengers. He desperately wants to get direct entry to wimbledon, he has 3 weeks to get himself into the top 100 and good results at a couple challengers would do that and i see no reason to believe he won't be able to do it if he really dedicates himself to it. Hence why I said I didn't think your prediction was that bold ;)

I know that you made good points. I don't need to see a zillion smileys to understand your posts, and vice versa. I was merely adding to your post in a more diagramic fashion. When you see people have Mardy Fish's gameplay reflected in their signatures, second lines, extended Bio, it leads one to believe that there is more going on in that player's game than meets the eye.

On that note, the ATP hasn't met my eye during Houston. Thanks TTC for remaining city-based.

If Mardy wins the Bermuda Challenger this week (is he still in or did he pull?) he will be a Top 100 player for sure (80 rankings points for the winner). If he makes the finals it will be close but he'll probably squeeze in. That might be good enough to get him into Queens, Notts, or Halle, he'll def get into Wimbledon.

http://66.232.148.140/blogs/thewrap/entry.asp?ENTRY_ID=249Late in the evening, I finally got a look at the men’s singles final in Houston. The matchup was a bit of a shocker: Mardy Fish vs. Jurgen Melzer. These are two of the ATP’s bigger goofs. Melzer is a creative player who hits one of the game’s most unlikely shots, a jumping two-handed drop shot, from anywhere on the court. He’s also been known to blow leads, and he did it again yesterday. Fish, a former Top 25 players now ranked in the 200s, is a sort of prankster little brother to Andy Roddick. Yesterday, with his untouched, dude-your-roots-are-showing hairdo, shorts that were falling off his waist, and quarter-cut socks, he looked ready for an early morning practice session, not a final. But the guy is blessed with a big serve, a powerful forehand, and a reliable backhand. It was enough to beat an inconsistent Melzer.

Fish was even better during his celebration. He fell on his back, tried unsuccessfully to jump into the stands to hug his coach, and eventually plopped into his chair on the sidelines, where a ball boy was standing right behind him. Without turning around, Fish stuck his hand out to his side, palm up—“give me five.” Right on cue, the boy’s hand darted out and touched Fish’s for a split-second. A quick, cool congrats from one kid to another.

Deboogle!.

Does this guy know anything? In two paragraphs the amount of errors are simply astounding.

Fish, a former Top 25 players now ranked in the 200stop 20, sir.is a sort of prankster little brother to Andy Roddick. He's older than Andy with his untouched, dude-your-roots-are-showing hairdoHe touched his hair plenty :)a powerful forehand, and a reliable backhandHis forehand's barely better than average and his backhand is his very biggest weapon, arguably one of the best 2-handers on the tour right now.

Did this guy actually watch the match?

Something I found impressive is that the only practice Mardy had was 1 hour on Monday after he got into houston. And he still beat guys like Monaco and Spadea who have had much much better clay results than he has. Good for Mardayyyyyy :)

Hmmm I would disagree and say that Fish has a reliable forehand and a powerful backhand.Thank you, I knew I wasn't just seeing things yesterday :) But yes he is a kid; As so many of them are. ;)well I'd suggest that Mardy's a little more 'kid-like' than most - he's a joker, plays pranks, etc. But that's who he is, and it's one of the reasons I like him. I agree he looks silly in the half-socks but if he is comfortable in them and ok without ankle supports, who is this guy to judge? Mardy's always worn baggy clothes, even moreso than most guys, but again, that's him.

And he really touched me yesterday with his exuberance at winning and the way he gave five to that little kid :D I loved that.oh I know you didn't :) But I think Mr. Tignor did. He is who he is and at least he's not fake about it :) I thought it was cute too. His interview with Wayne Bryan was also sweet, he was so happy and shocked that he was just speechless, it was a spontaneous innocence that was nice to see.

There was a long time when a lot of people questioned Mardy's commitment to the game. He wasn't particularly fit, he got hurt a lot, lost a lot of matches after being in winning positions, was very weak mentally, etc. So he got hurt, and while he couldn't really play, he got a lot fitter, cut his body fat down a lot, worked on his movement and his forehand and stuff, and it's showing. So he did it for himself but he's also proving a lot of critics wrong... and that doesn't seem like a very kid-like thing to accomplish :)
