Monte-Carlo Predictions

With Gasquet out, is there any chance that the final will be anything other than Federer v Nadal?

Off course, there are the usual dark horses:
Nalbandian, Davydenko, Coria, Gaudio, Ferrer, Ferrero and Safin. Maybe even Ljubicic and Berdych could also be considered outsiders. Or maybe Ivo Karlovic could come storming through the field. But what do we really expect?

Predictions please!

Karlovic :tape:

I think Nadal vs Federer is going to be this year's final.

Off course Karlovic. Haven't you seen him with his movement and his massive groundstrokes?

Federer vs. Davydenko
Nadal vs. Nalbandian

My predictions
-Safin will give Coria a hell in 2nd
-Nalbandian will meet Nadal in semi
-But eventually Federer will get this one

No way. A Masters Series event has never been that predictable, especially on clay. I'll be very surprised if Nalbandian makes it to the semis. He didn't win any matches at MC, Rome or Hamburg last year. Davydenko is playing his first clay tournament of the year. I would rate his chances of reaching the semis at about 50-50.

So many things can happen...........I doubt Nalbandian will make it to the SF, but it would be nice to see him play Nadal. Coria and Safin can tire each other out making the winner's next opponent have an easy match.......... Ferrer can play a fantastic match and take out Roger......... Safin took out Gaudio in straight sets in Valencia........that may be some indication of Gaudio's play this season. The only certainty is that we'll be seeing Nadal at the finals.

I will make a bold guess at who will be in the quarter finals and what will happen from then onwards.
Quarter Finals

(1) FEDERER, Roger SUI v CHELA, Juan Ignacio ARG - 6-2 7-5

SANTORO, Fabrice FRA v (5) DAVYDENKO, Nikolay RUS - 7-5 3-6 4-6

ACASUSO, Jose ARG v MONFILS, Gael FRA - 1-6 6-4 6-2

(6) CORIA, Guillermo ARG v (2) NADAL, Rafael ESP - 4-6 3-6

Semi Finals

(1) FEDERER, Roger SUI v (5) DAVYDENKO, Nikolay RUS - 6-4 7-6

ACASUSO, Jose ARG v (2) NADAL, Rafael ESP - 7-6 3-6 2-6

Final

(1) FEDERER, Roger SUI v (2) NADAL, Rafael ESP - Who knows?

Of course, the chances of me getting any of this correct are tantamount to the chances of Murray defeating Nadal on clay with a double bagel and I realise this.

I don't think Gasquet's presence would've mattered one way or the other. The way he has been playing, he would've been lucky to win a couple of matches, even if this tournament is on clay.

A TMS event is always unpredictable as Jimnik pointed out and even more so on clay. While there probably is a good chance that it will be a Nadal/Federer final, I highly doubt all the top seeds will be in the semis.

Nadal is the favorite but is there anyone who seriously doubts that Federer has the ability to win any match after watching what he has done in t he past 2.5 years??

I hope anybody, but not Federer wins
Among good players Nadal or Davydenko would be favourite choices :)

Merton
04-16-2006, 07:03 PM
My prior (belief) was that Rafa would be the favourite here, and i thought the odds would be similar to the ones for RG. However, as it turns out, Roger appears as the favourite to win Monte Carlo, with odds of 2.66:1 while Rafa has 2.76:1. In contrast, the French Open odds are Rafa 2.96:1 while Roger has 3.3:1. The only explanation for the odds discrepancy i can think of is that the market attaches value to the momentum Roger carries from IW and Miami.

I like Acasuso's chances at causing some damage if he comes with his head screwed on right. Tricky first match against Volandri if he isn't focused but he should be able to win that. Then he would probably have to take on Gaudio which would be a war unless Gaudio loses to Henman again.

ChloeLove

I think Nadal will be in the finals, despite how tough his side of the draw is. The odds actually do say Federer is the favorite, but judging from his clay performance in the past years i'm not certain that he will actually make the finals. If he does make the finals, I would actually like to Rafa win.

Either way there are bound to be some great match-ups at this tourni. If Rafa performs as expected he could possibly meet either Safin or Coria. Which would be nice to watch, Federer could meet Haas also. I hope Haas can challenge Federer, he's had some unlucky draws, bumping into Federer in almost all of them.

Losing early will certainly not have had detrimental effects on his physical condition. He should be fitter than any other contender. Form on hard court may not have been great although I'm sure most guys would kill to have got to the semi finals at Indian Wells. Clay is a different issue and so long as Nadal doesn't lose his first round match I think he will be fine.

i predict roger in the final (duh).

if nadal is in form, he could probally go all the way, i mean hes the current king of clay no?

but he HASNT played on clay alllllll year, soo i dont know about that, since in 05 he already had clay matches under his belt, so we will see.

i hope safin has a good run, possiably knocking out nadal (a guy can dream ;)).

and for haas to feel better and comeback asap.

Ljubicic will do pretty well i think, he has become really dependable from the baseline and won`t give away many points. I think both Roger and Nadal are going to lose before finals and somebody of Safin, Nalbandian and Ferrer is going to win a tournament.

nadal is now playing on his fav surface, so i dont see him any problem to go into the final, unless coria can do some damage in QF, but i dont think its going to happen

so federer vs nadal in final..

i just cannot see federer beating nadal on clay...

One thing going for Roger is that when he plays Rafael most points seem to end with a winner or loser off the Roger racket. If he can control the number of unforced errors he would have a good chance.

jenanun

yes i agree and i think the match between rafa and roger will be very close... could well be a 5 set match...

but in a final, rafa is too strong mentally, plus he has the adv (surface)...

so that will be interesting....

You're pushing the boat out a bit there, to be honest. If Federer does make it to the final I'll be highly impressed - it would be breaking new ground for him in MC and he has a tough draw (Nadal's is crumbling around him with the loss of Safin today).

Freeze17171
04-18-2006, 09:39 PM
Nadal has won 37 matches in a row on clay, and his biggest threat is a guy that he beaten 3 out of 4 times, and only one of those was on clay.

Neely
04-18-2006, 09:57 PM
Sure is Federer more vulnerable on clay than on any other surface, but if he lost before the final it would still be a little 'surprise', because he is every season also very successful on clay and also because nobody is used anymore to see Federer losing so early. Same for Nadal when playing on clay.

I mean it both ways, Safin is already gonzo :o Safin is very unpredictable these days . . . So now i'm thinking it will be Nadal vs Coria, if Coria holds up. I don't foresee Rafa being upset, seeing that his draw suddenly doesn't seem so hard anymore, but who knows.

Jimnik

Maybe we're overlooking a certain Tomas Berdych. This could be a big breakthrough for him. If he could get to the semis, why couldn't he upset Federer?

honestly federer got an easy draw, so he is going into final without doubt...
strong claycourt player like nadal, coria, gaudio, or nalbandian are on the other side of the draw...
i cannot see anyone (ferrero? i doubt...) can upset or challange him before the final.....

I know the scorelines look impressive but you really need to have seen the matches. Both players seemed to lose their patience very quickly and gave up trying to rally with JC.

The Chela match was good - JC definately seems to have his rhythm back - but nothing spectacular. After the first few games, Chela gave away a lot of cheap points.

David Ferrer should provide a good indication of where JC is with his game.

(7)G Gaudio (ARG) vs (15)T Robredo (ESP)
(6)G Coria (ARG) vs (2)R Nadal (ESP)
(1)R Federer (SUI) vs (8)D Ferrer (ESP)
(4)I Ljubicic (CRO) vs (12)F Gonzalez (CHI)

Theres none of these more unknown clay court specialists. Nobody who made a surprise quarter final. We have 6 of the top 8 seeds in the quarter final! These are some interesting matchups.

A very high quality line up. Ljubicic - Gonzo is easily the weakest quarter. I guess I would have to predict that all the higher seeded players will come through leaving Gaston, Rafa, Fed and Ljubo. Then it's hard to see Ljubicic beating Fed on clay and hard to see anyone beating Rafa which would leave us with a shcok final

Anyway, I'm gonna now come up with this new improved prediction for the rest of the tournament:

(7)G Gaudio (ARG) vs (15)T Robredo (ESP) | 6-1 2-6 7-5
(6)G Coria (ARG) vs (2)R Nadal (ESP) | 4-6 7-5 0-6
(1)R Federer (SUI) vs (8)D Ferrer (ESP) | 6-3 7-5
(4)I Ljubicic (CRO) vs (12)F Gonzalez (CHI) | 7-6 4-6 6-4

(7)G Gaudio (ARG) vs (2)R Nadal (ESP) | 1-6 4-6
(1)R Federer (SUI) vs (4)I Ljubicic (CRO) | 6-2 7-6

(2)R Nadal (ESP) vs (1)R Federer (SUI) | Really hard to see any other final than this. The only upset I can see happening is Ferrer over Fed.
